About Walter Daniel Zimmerman

Walter Daniel Zimmerman, 93, of Mesa, Arizona, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, March 22, 2026.

Walter was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by five of his children: Kathryn, Daniel, Lisa, Jan, and Dennis; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lela; his son, Eric; his grandson, Conner; his parents; his sister, Frances; and many cherished friends and family members who welcomed him home.

Walter spent his early years in Philadelphia, dividing his time between city life and the family farm—experiences that helped shape his strong work ethic and character. During the Korean War, he was transferred to El Paso, Texas, while serving in the U.S. Army as Staff Sergeant and Missile Instructor. It was there that his life began to take a new direction, named Lela May Donaldson! He later moved to Tempe, Arizona, with his wife Lela and new daughter, Kathryn, where he attended and graduated from Arizona State University.

Following his formal education, Walter dedicated himself wholeheartedly to his family and career. He worked as an electrical engineer before transitioning into a successful career as a life insurance and securities agent, faithfully serving his clients well into his 80s.

Walter lived a life of service. He was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served diligently in many callings. He was also deeply involved in the Boy Scouts of America for decades, an active member of the Sertoma Club of Mesa, and contributed to several community committees focused on literacy and constitutional education.

Walter will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. While his absence leaves a profound void, his family finds comfort and joy in the belief that he has begun the next step of his eternal journey and has been reunited with loved ones who have gone before.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 3, 2026, at 1:00 PM, with a visitation beginning at 12:00 PM, at the church building located at, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 422 E. First met Walt in 1979 when I first joined Sertoma……. What a reunion Walt and Lela are now having……. If I could say one word about Walt it would be “Service”……. Walt was always serving others……. Sertoma, Boy Scouts, Bishop, Home Teacher, Insurance Sales and Friend….. Someday I’ll share “The Walt Zimmerman Story” (as Susan and I call it)……. Walt was a great example and I loved him like a brother……. I’ll miss his smile and laugh…….
