In Hindu tradition, cremation is Antyesti, the final sacred rite for the departed, and being present is part of how a family says goodbye. Families of other faiths, including Sikh, Buddhist and Jain families, and families with no particular tradition, also ask to be present. When someone you love has died, you should not have to explain your customs to a stranger. We will work with your family to accommodate the customs and traditions that are important to you, and handle the details so you can focus on the rites and on each other.

Because we own and operate our own crematory in Mesa, we can work closely with your family on how you wish to be involved. We are here any hour of the day or night at (480) 964-8686.

How we work with your family

Hindu practice varies by region, community and family, so we begin by asking what your family follows rather than assuming. We will work with your family to accommodate the customs and traditions that are important to you. Tell your funeral director what matters most, and we will plan around it.

Timing
Many families wish to cremate soon after death. Call us at any hour and tell us what your tradition asks for. Timing depends on paperwork, permits and other factors outside our control, and we will keep you informed and do all we can to honor your wishes.
Prayers and officiants
Your family may invite a pandit, granthi, monk or other officiant to lead prayers and readings. We will work with you on the time and space, and on the music, readings and offerings that are meaningful to your family.
Family roles
Many traditions give specific roles to family members, such as the eldest son’s role in the final rites. Tell your funeral director, and we will talk through how to honor them.
Gatherings and meals
Ask your funeral director what we can arrange at our chapels and reception spaces in Mesa.

Witnessing the cremation

Witnessing means your family is present when the cremation begins. We will work with your family on how that looks, including prayers and the customs that matter to you.

Typically a small group attends. If you would like a larger group, tell us and we will work with you to find the best way to accommodate your family.

What to expect

  1. Call us any time, day or night.

Your funeral director will ask about your family’s traditions and your timing. If your tradition asks for the cremation to happen quickly, say so right away.

  2. We care for your loved one.

We handle the transfer, the paperwork and the permits.

  3. You come to our crematory.

Your family gathers at our Mesa crematory.

  4. The cremation begins with your family present.

We will explain what to expect and work with you on the details.

  5. The ashes are returned to your family.

We return your loved one’s cremated remains to your family in the urn or container you choose.

The ashes

Many Hindu families collect the ashes (asthi) and immerse them in flowing water, traditionally a sacred river. We return the ashes to your family, and families arrange their own travel. Check airline and customs rules, which vary by country and airline. There is no deadline: many families wait until they are ready or until relatives can travel.
