A Life Remembered

Obituary

Velma Kay Penrod, 86, passed away peacefully in Queen Creek, Arizona, on June 12th, 2026. Born to James Ivan and Ida Ruby Jones in 1939 in Miami, Arizona, she was the third of five children and often embarked on mischievous adventures with her older sisters Iva Faye and Evan, and younger brothers Ivan and Mervyn. As a young woman, she met and fell in love with her eternal companion, Chester Eugene “Sonny” Penrod, and they were wed on August 30th, 1954. They were happily married for sixty-seven years and are now reunited six years after his passing.

They raised four children, Robert (Shirley), Robbie (Cindy), Vonda (Robert), and Shannon (Terry). While raising children, she worked at Mesa Lutheran Hospital and then for Marriot, managing food service operations for Kyrene and then Queen Creek school districts. Ever the hard worker, she had a love for animals, especially horses and dogs.

She also had a passion for the roping community in which she had many friends. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and possessed a great love for her Savior and the ancestors who taught her of Him. She leaves a growing legacy of twenty-six grandchildren and over fifty great grandchildren. We will love, miss, and forever cherish our dear mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
