Obituary
In Loving Memory of Todd Andrew Shell
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, Papa, brother, and friend, Todd Andrew Shell, who passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 1, 2026, at the age of 64.
Born on June 24, 1962, in Mesa, Arizona, Todd grew up with a passion for athletics and competition. He loved playing all sports and was an exceptional softball player, but his first love was football.
He attended Mountain View High School, where he excelled in football, basketball, and track. He helped lead his football team to its first state championship in 1978. He continued his football career at Brigham Young University, where he earned a scholarship, became a standout linebacker, and received All-WAC honors.
In 1984, Todd’s lifelong dedication to football led him to the NFL when he was drafted in the first round by the San Francisco 49ers. During his professional career, he was part of two Super Bowl championship teams, earning rings from Super Bowls XIX and XXIII. His competitive spirit, determination, and love for the game continued long after his playing days. He went on to coach professionally in the Arena Football League with the Arizona Rattlers, San Jose SaberCats, and New York Dragons, earning Coach of the Year honors in 2003.
Todd was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings, especially cherishing the opportunities he had to work with the youth. He had a strong testimony of the gospel and a deep, personal love for his Savior, Jesus Christ. Through life’s trials and hardships, Todd came to know his Savior in a very personal way. He found strength in His grace, peace in His forgiveness, and comfort in knowing that during some of his darkest moments, when he could no longer carry the weight on his own, the Lord carried him.
Todd never forgot the schools and communities that helped shape his life. He generously gave his time and resources to Mountain View High School, Brigham Young University, and BYU–Hawaii, supporting their programs and creating opportunities for future generations. He believed in giving back, investing in young people, and helping others achieve their dreams.
Although football opened many doors and brought incredible experiences into Todd’s life, his greatest accomplishments were never measured in championships, awards, or accolades. They were found in the family he loved so deeply.
Todd was a devoted husband to his wife of 46 years, Kelli, and a proud father to his two children, Tanner and Krystal. He loved his family fiercely, and nothing brought him more happiness than spending time with those closest to him.
Todd’s family experienced tremendous heartbreak in May 2025 with the passing of his beloved son, Tanner. Their bond was one of deep love, and while the loss of both father and son has left an immeasurable void in the lives of those who loved them, the family finds comfort in their joyful reunion.
Above all, Todd treasured being Papa to his five grandchildren, Emeri, Matix, Talan, Monroe, and Phoebe. Whether coaching or cheering them on from the sidelines, celebrating their accomplishments, sharing stories, or simply spending time together, being their Papa was his greatest joy. Nothing meant more to him than his grandchildren.
Todd’s legacy extends far beyond the football field. He will be remembered for his competitive spirit, generosity, deep love for his family, cherished friendships, and the countless lives he touched. His accomplishments were remarkable, but the love he gave and the memories he created will always be his greatest legacy.
Todd is survived by his loving wife, Kelli Shell; his daughter, Krystal Arnett, and son-in-law, Jason Arnett; and his five cherished grandchildren, Emeri Felis (Cole), Matix Arnett (Lola), Talan, Monroe, and Phoebe. He is also survived by his sisters, Beth Wann and Connie Dees; his brothers, Jeff Jolley (Aletha) and Tyler Shell (Che).
He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Todd Tanner Shell; his parents, Robert (Bob) and Mary Shell; his brother, Joseph Jolley; his sister, Tina Rux; his father-in-law, Elbert (Al) Gardner; and his brothers-in-law, Mike Rux and Felix Dees.
Of all the titles Todd held throughout his remarkable life, none meant more to him than Papa. His grandchildren adored him, and the love they shared will live on through the memories they created together.
He will be deeply missed and forever loved by all who knew him.
