Stuart Arvon Scow, age 66, passed away peacefully in the arms of his loving wife, Laurie, on Thursday, March 9 th , 2023 in Tempe, Arizona due to complications from cancer. He resided in Ahwatukee, Arizona.

Stuart was born in Provo, Utah on January 10 th , 1957, to Ted Justesen Scow and Joy Marlene Oakley Scow. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Tempe, Arizona. Stuart was a bright, inquisitive, and loving child. He was always strong physically, mentally, and spiritually. Stuart was an exceptional athlete, competing in track and field, wrestling, basketball, and football. He loved music, sang in choirs and musical performances, and played the tuba. Stuart’s favorite instruments to listen to were the cello and the organ.

Stuart was an Eagle Scout and loved to have fun without ever drinking, using drugs, or getting into trouble. He was a hard worker and began intensive manual labor at an early age in his father’s cotton fields. He worked construction during his summer breaks, earning money to pay his own way to serve as a missionary when he turned 19 years old. Stuart graduated from Tempe High School in 1975. Due to his talent as a football player, Stuart was offered multiple full-ride scholarships all over the United States. He declined them all with the desire to serve the Lord and his fellow man as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He accepted a call to serve in the Johannesburg South Africa Mission in 1976. Serving others and teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ changed his life.

After serving for two years, he returned home. Again, he was offered college football scholarships. Yet again, he turned them down, choosing instead to focus his life on excelling academically while pursuing his education in the nuclear engineering field. He began his education at Mesa Community College. Soon thereafter, he married Lisa Renee Sims on April 11 th , 1979. Stuart continued his education at the School of Engineering at Arizona State University. Then, he attended Brigham Young University, completing his Bachelor’s degree in 1982.

Stuart began his career with Bechtel Power Corporation in California. He then advanced to more challenging work at the Wolf Creek Nuclear Generating Station in Kansas. He transferred to Georgia to work as a construction and start-up engineer at the Plant Vogtle Generating Station. At this point, he moved from commercial nuclear enterprise to military nuclear production. He resigned from Bechtel Power to work at the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Plant in South Carolina. In November 1990, Stuart jumped at the opportunity to return back home to Arizona. He accepted an offer to work as a Senior Engineer with the Arizona Public Service Company at Palo Verde. He continued a long and rewarding career at Palo Verde for nearly thirty-three years.

Stuart’s marriage ended in divorce in 1998; however, three beautiful children had been born from that union: Jason, Jordan, and Ambria. Being a single father was demanding, but he loved his children and devoted himself to them. He found fulfillment and joy in spending time with them, all the while serving in various Church positions and excelling in his career.

In December 2007, Stuart met the love of his life, Laurie Call. She brought with her four amazing children: Jessica, Jamison, Marissa, and Mikayla. He fell in love with Laurie and her children quickly. Stuart and Laurie were married on May 9 th , 2008. At this time, all of their children were adults, except eight-year-old Mikayla. Stuart raised her as his own and legally adopted her. Stuart was also blessed with eight beautiful grandchildren. He had a unique way of making each one feel special and loved.

Stuart was accomplished at any task he set out to do. He was the ultimate DIYer, specializing in everything from electrical wiring to home renovations, even irrigation systems. He was also an excellent auto-mechanic. Stuart loved to travel with his adventure-seeking companion. They explored six continents together.

Stuart was a stoic man. He was soft-spoken and a gentle giant. He never sought out attention or praise, quietly earning the respect of all who knew him. Stuart’s faith and integrity were unwavering. He acknowledged the hand of the Lord in all things and frequently and fervently declared, “Every day is a gift.” Nearing the end of his life, he found unparalleled strength and comfort in the knowledge that he would soon return to his Heavenly Home.

Stuart is survived by his dearly beloved wife Laurie, his children: Jason Scow, Jordan (Erin) Scow, Ambria (Mark) Garcia, Jessica Jones, Jamison Jones, Marissa (Scott) Vleeschouwer, and Mikayla (Samuel) Scow-Reynolds, grandchildren: Jacob and Ava Vaita, Isaac and Sammy Garcia, and Addison, Logan, Morgan, and Gannon Scow, his mother, Joy Marlene Oakley Scow, siblings: Stanton (Susan) Scow, Brian (Nancy) Scow, Bradley (Sue) Scow, Michele (Michael) Markham, Michael (Julie) Scow, and Shaun (Afton) Scow, many nieces and nephews, and other family members. Stuart was preceded in death by his father, Ted Justesen Scow.

Stuart is now free from cancer and the complexities of this world as he begins his greatest adventure into eternity. God be with him ‘til we meet again.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 1 st , 2023 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4525 E. Knox Rd. Phoenix, AZ 85044.

Viewing: 10:30 – 11:15 am. Funeral: 11:30 am followed immediately by a luncheon.

Internment will be at 4 pm at the Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park, 400 S Power Rd. Mesa, AZ 85206.
