Robert Keith Hawkes

I knew Rob through his college friend Don Schoen and the annual golf outing Don organized in AZ. While Rob and I have opposite personalities (he was always dignified and quiet while I am often neither), we formed a bond on the golf course. He was so smooth and calm in everything he did with every part of his golf swing. Rob consistently was the best golfer every year out of the 10-12 participants which led me to name him ‘the silent assassin’; a name I knew he liked by the wry smile that he displayed whenever we used it with him. Rob touched everyone in that group & I am quite sure he touched all who were blessed to know him. May he enjoy eternal peace!

Rob Hawkes was a dear friend who I came to know 50 years ago. Rob absolutely stood out from the crowd in many ways. God gave Rob amazing athletic gifts. His golf game, his basketball game (and I am told his baseball and football games as well) were extraordinary. In all of these he had been given another gear to shift into if he needed to. But he rarely needed to. And he was adventurous and inquisitive. That led to his flying (both powered planes and gliders) his mountain biking, and his fly fishing. And he took the same zeal and competitive spirit to mathematics, to chess, and to the technology he worked with for many years. Rob decided early in his life that if something was worth doing, that is was worth doing very well. And his wonderful family is clear evidence of his gifts in that arena. And all of this was conducted with humility and generosity of spirit and true graciousness. And calmness and selflessness. Some good friends and I came out each February to play golf. These guys turned into a “Rob Hawkes Fan Club”, and not only because of Rob’s wonderful golf swing. It was because he was such a wonderful guy. He was a wonderful friend.

Rob passing has truly saddened me. Rob and I were friends and coworkers. His technical abilities and skills were outstanding. He was an even better person. My condelences to the Hawkes family. God bless, Vince & Char Enriquez
