About Michael Turnbaugh Riggs

Michael Turnbaugh Riggs, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Mesa, Arizona, on April 16, 2026, after a long illness. He was 83 years old.

Mike was born on November 20, 1942, in Phoenix, Arizona, to John Dell Riggs and Juanita Voelker Riggs. He attended Loma Linda Elementary School, North High School, and Phoenix College, where he was especially involved in music, sports, and student government. He later attended Arizona State University and earned a degree in Biology. Mike placed a high value on education and worked diligently in school. He had a naturally curious mind and a lifelong love of learning. He loved to read and better understand the world around him, especially history and science. He was a wealth of knowledge and was often the person others turned to with questions – he almost always knew the answer.

From 1962 to 1965, Mike served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Netherlands. He grew to love the Dutch people and culture and remained fluent in Dutch throughout his life. During his mission, he sang in a quartet known as the “Mormon 4,” which traveled throughout the Netherlands and Belgium performing in concerts and on local radio programs. In 2019, Mike was able to return to the Netherlands and Belgium with his wife and daughter, revisiting many of the places that had meant so much to him.

Coming from a very musically talented family, Mike had a deep love of music and was blessed with a beautiful tenor voice. He sang solos in church programs and performed in numerous choirs during high school, college, and later in life. He could often be found listening to his favorite songs on the radio, and singing right along.

Mike was deeply devoted to his service in the Church. Over the years, he served with the youth and as a Boy Scout leader. He found great joy in mentoring young people and helping many achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. He was always willing to serve, help others, and give to those in need.

Mike enjoyed gardening - especially growing tomatoes and sweet potatoes - telling stories, a good hamburger and Dr Pepper, and the beauty of his home state of Arizona. Above all, he loved his family and treasured every moment spent with them.

He is survived by his wife, Diana Mackelprang Riggs; his children, Derek Riggs and Brittany Riggs; his grandchildren, Gage Kenyon and Sierra Riggs; his great-grandchildren; and his brother, Tim (Ann) Riggs. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, John V. Riggs; and his sister, Donna Riggs Kenney.

The family would like to express sincere gratitude to all of Mike’s caregivers, especially Annise and the Hearts of Healing Hospice team, for their kindness and support over the past months. They also offer their deepest thanks to his loving wife, Diana, who cared for him so selflessly and patiently, day and night, throughout his illness.

Funeral services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2300 W. Javelina Ave., Mesa, AZ 85202, on Saturday, April 25, 2026. A viewing will be held from 9:00 to 10:15 a.m., followed by services at 10:30 a.m. Mike will be laid to rest in the Kanab City Cemetery in Kanab, Utah, on April 28, 2026, following a family graveside service.
