About Leona Fairbourn Turley

Leona Fairbourn Turley passed away July 23, 2021 in Mesa, Arizona. Leona was born October 7, 1926 in Crescent, Utah, the second of eight children born to Alma and Ora Whitmore Fairbourn. She graduated from Jordan High School in 1944. Being awarded a nation 4-H scholarship, she attended Utah State Agricultural College. While there she met and married her husband, Jay Turley, December 20, 1946. She later attended Brigham Young University where she graduated Cum Laude with an elementary teaching certificate. With her husband she helped develop a student tutoring program which was introduced in Texas and many eastern states. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as an MIA President, teacher in many organizations and as a Relief Society President in 4 different wards and 2 different stakes. She served as a temple worker for 30 years in the Mesa Arizona Temple. She is survived by a son, Brent Jay Turley and a daughter, Gayle Harris, 6 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Cindy Turley, preceded her in death. The viewing will be Thursday, July 29, 2021 from 5-7 PM at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 North Centennial Way, Mesa, Arizona. Graveside services will be held Friday, July 30, 2021 at 1 PM at the Snowflake Cemetery, Snowflake, Arizona.

We loved Sis Turley! She played a huge part at a very crucial time in Ammon and Austins life and we will forever be grateful for her service and friendship. Though we are sad she is gone, we are happy she is back with her Heavenly Father and husband!

Leona was always welcoming and helpful to me whenever I went to see her. We connected spiritually and she always had a willing heart to help me with information. She helped me with my petitions to try to help our Mesa community. She helped me find a house cleaner. She visited Brittany’s and my primary class to tell us about her recovery from her first fall and how the Lord will always be there when we ask for help. She was a living example of her strong testimony. I will always love and miss Lee.

Lee was such an amazing example of love, faith, friendship, and discipleship. She was always willing to serve the Lord and she was a ministering angel to many lonely and downtrodden people. She always had a smile, a hug and a word of cheer for all who knew her. Thank you for sharing your light and love with me Lee! I will always have a place in my heart for you. I married into Le’s mother’s family. My husband was her first cousin. I moved to Mesa after he passed away and got to know Le for a short while. What a wonderful woman. I am grateful to have gotten to know her.

Lee is my dearest friend! She is so compassionate and so understanding! She checked on so many people everyday because of her concern for them! She wanted me to call her so she would know that I was okay! I will miss her! I know that the trials with her health she has had, this is a blessing for her! Thank you dear ” mom” Leona Turley! You and ” dad” Jay Turley took me in to your home as a “fosterchild” for almost a year when I was 14 years old and you taught me and guided my direction both spiritually and earthly and in social graces, nourished me with love and compassion .
