Obituary

Gordon Lamar Chapman, 80, of Queen Creek, Arizona passed away on October 1, 2014. He was born on April 19, 1934 in Bluewater, New Mexico to WF (Chink) and Imogene Chapman. He married Rae Verdene Halls in 1956 in the Mesa Arizona Temple. They were married for 58 years. He was preceded in death by his grandson Austin David Chapman in 1992. He is survived by his wife Verdene Chapman, his five sons; Doug (Karla), Steve, Vic (Heidi), Tim and David (Lana); 14 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and a set of twins on the way.

Lamar served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England in 1954. He served as the first bishop of the Mesa 23rd Ward for six years. He loved scouting and serving in the church. Much of his career life was with his brother, Fullmer. Businesses included a dairy, a carwash, and two mobile home parks. He enjoyed traveling and outdoor recreational activities with his family and friends. He loved his family very much. He will be missed.

Services will be Saturday, October 11th at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 North Centennial Way, Mesa, AZ. Visitation will be from 3:00-3:30 with a memorial service immediately following the visitation. Interment will be at City of Mesa Cemetery, 1212 N. Center Street, Mesa, Arizona.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Chapman Family. I knew Gordon Chapman to me a man of God who loved his wife and family with all of his heart. He will be missed but never forgotten. His testimony of Jesus the Christ is that He lives and that families can be together forever. I, too, know this to be true. Gordon, I will see you again my friend.

Lamar and his wife Verdene accepted our daughter, Lana, into their family as if she was a daughter. Our son in law, David, is an extension of Lamar’s love and teachings. It was always very evident to us that Lamar treasured the importance of families. His being foremost in his heart. His influence and goodness will be greatly missed. Our prayers go out to his wife, Verdene, and all of his family.

We were shocked to see that Lamar had passed away. He was our first Bishop in Mesa when we were newlyweds. We know your family will miss him in this life, but look forward to seeing him again. Our love is sent to your family.

To Mr. Chapman’s family, I’m very sorry for your loss. I wanted to offer you some comfort that I’ve found in the Bible. In John 11:25 Jesus said “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who exercises faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life.” It’s my hope that you can draw comfort and strength from this promise that we can see the loved ones we have lost again. (John 5:28,29)
