Edward “Ed” Leo Rau

Edward “Ed” Leo Rau never met a stranger. Wherever he went, Ed brought warmth, kindness, and a genuine interest in others. He was quick to lend a hand and was skilled in electronics, mechanics, and construction. Ed passed away on June 10, 2026, at the age of 64 at his home in Gilbert, Az. He determinedly faced every challenge in his nearly 12-year cancer battle with strength and grace inspiring all who knew him.

Ed was born on October 19, 1961, to Michael and Dorothy (Peterson) Rau in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Raised in a family of ten children, he grew up with a strong sense of family and hard work. His early interests included hunting, fishing, wrestling, and working on cars. He spent many years working on his uncle’s cattle farm.

After graduating from West Harrison High School, Ed served his country for over 27 years in the United States Navy and the Navy Reserves. Ed served as an engineman aboard the USS Enhance MSO-437. He continued his service in an amphibious assault unit until his retirement in 2009 as a Senior Chief with the Naval & Marine Corps Reserve Center, Omaha, Nebraska. Ed’s military career reflected his discipline, integrity, and deep love for his country. Along the way, he developed lifelong friendships with his fellow servicemen.

Ed dedicated nearly 40 years supporting cancer research laboratories at the Eppley Institute, University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. His expertise, commitment, and deep knowledge made him an invaluable member of the research community and the development of future cancer treatments. His colleagues became friends.

Ed treasured time spent with family, friends, and his cherished grandchildren. He was very involved in his children’s athletics and was a well-respected coach. Ed enjoyed golfing, traveling the world, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes, and spending time with his wife.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Michael Rau and Dorothy Rau Michael; his sisters, Lois Thomas and Cynthia Wright; and his brother, Patrick Rau.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Karen Rau; his children, Jeff (Siobhan) Rau, Justin Rau, and Alysha (Sam) Milder; his stepchildren, Jake (Donna) Krabbe, Elizabeth (Shane Bennett) Krabbe, and Josh (Taylor Acord) Krabbe and three cherished grandchildren; Niamh Rau, Madison Milder, and Baker Bennett. He is also survived by his siblings, Michael (Joan) Rau, Audrey (Terry) Evans, Rebecca (Roberto) Vega, Matt (Mona) Rau, Tim (Tammy) Rau, and Lori (Danny) McWilliams, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Ed will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

A Celebration of Life will be held July 15th, 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Indian Creek Golf Course, 3825 N 202nd, Elkhorn, NE 68022. A private interment will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, IA. No flowers please.

In lieu of flowers, consider donating directly to The Iowa Veterans Cemetery, 34024 Veterans Memorial Drive Adel, IA 50003. A bench in Ed’s honor is planned, as well as contributions to the beautification program.
