Obituary

Our beloved mother and grandmother, Doris Jewel Vitek Sloan, passed away surrounded by her family on July 17, 2024 at her home of 71 years in Mesa, Arizona. She was born on December 10, 1925 in Rochester, New York to Anthony and Edith Vitek. Her family moved to Phoenix, Arizona when she was one year old, where she grew up with her brothers, Harold and Bernard Vitek. Doris worked at Goodyear Aircraft during World War II. There, she met Ralph M Sloan whom she married on February 20, 1943. Ralph and Doris were later sealed in the Mesa Arizona Temple on June 14, 1944. In 1953, they moved to their home on Beverly in Mesa, Arizona where they raised their four children. Doris served faithfully in the Primary, Young Women, and Relief Society organizations of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including 14 years as Maricopa Stake Girls’ Camp Director, 28 years as Regional Girls’ Camp Director overseeing Camp LoMia, and 19 years as an ordinance worker in the Mesa Arizona Temple. She left behind a legacy of faith in Jesus Christ and a life of service.

Doris is survived by her children, Ronald (Johanna) Sloan, George (Judy) Sloan, Janet Pew, Edith (Michael) Gallacher, 17 grandchildren, and 52 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Anthony and Edith; 2 brothers, Harold and Bernard; a sister, Evelyn; a grandson, Daniel; and her husband of 60 years, Ralph.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 27 at noon at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 1054 W 2 nd Place, Mesa, Arizona, with a viewing prior from 11:00 – 11:45 am. Interment will follow at the Mesa City Cemetery, 1212 N Center Street, Mesa, Arizona.
