David Gammon Eagleburger
08/12/1942 - 12/27/2018

“Dave died.  Hotrods and tools for sale.”  Those two sentences are what Dave said he always wanted for his obituary notice.  More needs to be said, though.

David Gammon Eagleburger died of prostate cancer that could not be cured via early detection, medication, or chemotherapy.

Dave was born during World War II on the Quantico, Virginia Marine Corps Base.  At the war’s end, he moved with one of his younger brothers and his parents, Helen and Gerald “Dutch” Eagleburger to Mesa, Arizona.  He was a Mesa resident from that day until he died.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ann.  He is also survived by his eldest son, Matthew and his wife, Megan and their two sons, Jack and Craig, his youngest son, Casey and his wife, Nicolle and their two sons Buck and Mack.  He is also survived by his brother Greg and his wife, Gail and their daughters Sarah (Colin) Danna and son Daniel.  He is also survived by his other brother Mark and his wife, Patty and their daughters Amy and Kelsey.

Dave grew up in Mesa from kindergarten to graduation from Mesa High School (the only high school in Mesa at the time).  He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Northern Arizona University.  He began teaching English and history and coaching football, wrestling and Track at Carson Junior High School in 1964.  He continued to work for the Mesa Public School District No. 4 for over 40 years as a school principal, the district athletic director, an assistant superintendent for Senior and Junior High Schools, and as the associate superintendent.

Dave respected most.  Feared none.  He was as comfortable riding cross country to biker rallies as he was presenting to corporate and educational boards.  He was as comfortable driving  hotrods to car meets as he was speaking to gatherings of thousands about achievement.  He was as comfortable camping with his once rowdy friends as he was playing a banjo solo with the Mesa Symphony Orchestra.  He measured twice and cut once-well, most of the time anyway.  He knew that there were more horses butts than horses in this world.  He knew that what you want to do, you do and all else is simply talk.  He took care of business.

A Celebration of Life will be held in his honor on Saturday, January 12th from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Windemere Hotel & Conference Center, 5750 E. Main St., Mesa, Arizona 85205.  Doors open at 2:00 PM for food and drink.  Memories will begin and be shared at 3:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Bldg #2,  Phoenix, AZ 85014

Paula M. Smith
May 13, 1951 - December 14, 2018

Paula M. Smith, 67, passed away on December 14, 2018 in Mesa, Arizona. Our mother was born in Cottonwood, AZ on May 13, 1951, fittingly it was Mother’s Day. She cherished the time she spent with her children and grandchildren and would tell anyone who listened about them. Such a child at heart herself, she would try anything her grandkids did, sometimes leading to a trip to the emergency room.

Paula raised her family in St. Johns, AZ where she drove a school bus and enjoyed the small-town atmosphere. She also drove a bus and trained bus drivers for Higley School District. That move to Gilbert, AZ kept her close to those most important to her – her grandbabies. In every job she held she was surrounded by wonderful people who became close friends that kept in touch even after she retired.

Throughout her life, Paula loved her Heavenly Father dearly. Her earthly father also holds a special place in her heart and now he holds her in his arms. The time she spent with her siblings and mother were treasured.

Paula’s sweet smile would light up a room and was absolutely contagious. She enjoyed being creative – stamping, knitting, painting, decorating, and sewing. She made everything from blessing outfits to wedding dresses and veils. Some of her crafts, like dolls, have become family heirlooms for many people.

She is remembered and loved by her children and grandchildren – Danette (Sean) Askew, Talon, Zane (Kassidy); Carly (Dustin) Smith-Wardle, Boston, Baylee, Grae, Oakland; Brett (Dustin) Lee, Payton, Taylor, Reese, Spencer; Erin (Jared) Finch, Connor, Corbin, Bridger, Mason; Shawn (Gina) Smith, Brianna, Ailiana, Owen; Jodi (Lincoln) Proctor, Crewse, Nash, Drew, Knox, Dax; Husband – Ed Smith; Sisters & Brothers – Sonja (Curtis) Crandall, Anna Marie (Aerol) Gruwel, Danny (Jeannie) Petersen, Lynette (Jim) Shelley, Kevin (Jolene) Petersen, Jim (Tori) Beil, Sam Petersen, Julie (Brian) Seavey; Mother – Cecile Adeline Beil.

A visitation will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – Gilbert Highland Ward, 3580 E Houston Ave, Gilbert, AZ on Friday, December 21, 2018, with the service to follow at 11:00am. Interment will take place at 12:00pm on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at Pinedale Cemetery, Pinedale, AZ.

Our mother was known for her friendly way with conversation even with total strangers. Some may be surprised to learn of her shyness, but yet she possessed a contagious smile and a good sense of humor. Throughout her life she has shared what could be offered whether it was a meal, opening her home for those in need, or gifting others with financial support. Mom has touched many hearts and lives; she will always be remembered for her generous and loving ways.

During her long work history, Rosa earned a GED certificate and attended Collins College in Tempe, Arizona, determined to provide a better life for her family. Mom worked as a waitress, cooler pad assembler, plastic machine operator, and worked 16 years as a CNA at several local nursing homes, which she found very rewarding.

Her faith in God and will to live carried her through the final days of her life, with family and friends who gave their prayers and love.
