LaVon “Bonnie” Ashcroft Jackson
September 5, 1917 - January 1, 2019

Our beloved mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, LaVon “Bonnie” Ashcroft Jackson, left this earthly home on January 1, 2019 for a better one. She was born on September 5, 1917 in Ramah, New Mexico to Paris Ira Ashcroft and Rachel Butler. She was raised in a wonderful, loving home, having been taught the principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

She attended school in Eagar, Arizona, and graduated high school as Valedictorian. When an opportunity came for her to attend Beauty College in Los Angeles, California, she was blessed to live with her sister and brother-in-law, Maurine and Pearl White. After her graduation, she returned to Eagar, AZ, where she began dating Frank Leslie Jackson. They were married and sealed in the Salt Lake City, Utah Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Les was with the U.S. Forest Service, stationed in Springerville, AZ. Being a Reserve Officer in the Army Air Corps, Les was called to serve in WWII. By this time, Les and had two daughters and a third one on the way. LaVon’s sister, Fern Merrill, was also left with two daughters while her husband was also serving in WWII. So, the two sisters stayed with each other with their now, five little blonde daughters.

Les, as a Major, was released from serving when WWII ended. They lived in Utah for a short while, then moved to New Mexico, and then to Arizona, having been transferred a lot since Les was again working for the Forest Service. He and our dear mother served together faithfully in many positions in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints wherever they lived.

On December 17, 1969, Les lost his life in an unfortunate accident near Payson, AZ, as he was working for the Forest Service. This left our mother, LaVon, a widow for a number of years. Our two brothers, Norman and Karl, were still in school. She was able to work in the Mesa, AZ temple and served a mission for the Church in Pennsylvania.

After many years, LaVon was blessed to meet another fine man, LaMont Potter, and they were married until he passed away in 2002. They had also served faithfully together in many callings, which included a mission for the Church to the Houston East Texas Mission, as well as working in the Family History Center in Mesa, AZ.

LaVon loved attending the temple faithfully; meeting with her two brothers, a sister, and a sister-in-law each week to enjoy Mexican food and play Triple Yahtzee. She was well known for sending birthday cards and notes to everyone with her heartfelt love for their birthday, and if you were lucky, some money! When new babies were born in the family, she made baby blankets and crocheted around the edges. She was a marvelous cook and no one ever went hungry in her home! She taught the Old Testament in the first Church Seminary in Douglas, AZ. Attending the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers was an event LaVon looked forward to each month. Reading all the Scriptures and many other good books was one of her passions.

LaVon was always so grateful for her marvelous posterity and loved each one. Her parents taught her to love one another and to “always say good things about each other.” She is survived by three daughters, Charlotte (Archdeacon), Donna Kaye (Larkin), and Rachel Elaine (Beech); two sons, Norman and Karl Jackson; her brothers, Henry, Ronald, and Rulon Ashcroft; two sisters, Fern (Ashcroft) Merrill and Mary (Ashcroft) Crosby; 23 grandchildren; 80 great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held at the Mesa South Stake Center from 6:00 to 8:00pm on Friday, January 4, 2019 at 2334 E Pueblo, Mesa, AZ 85204. The funeral service will be held at 10:30am on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at the same location, with a second visitation prior to the service from 9:00 to 10:15am. Interment will be Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery, 719 N 27th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85009.

Our grateful appreciation to Prime Care Hospice, especially Kathy, Kristina, Geneva, Beatrice, Ashley, and Janelle.

Cornelia “Nena” Brown LeSueur passed away peacefully through the veil, to be reunited with her husband after a 48-year separation, in her home on December 28, 2018 – the home she lived in for 70 years.

Nena was born at home on September 6, 1918, to Donald and Cornelia Brown, in Miami, Arizona. She was the third of six children. She married William Wallace LeSueur on July 29, 1940, in the Manti Utah Temple. She spent most of her 100+ years in Mesa, where she and her husband, Wallace LeSueur, raised their six children with love. Her life was devoted to serving – in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, her family, and her community.

In a day when few women went to college, Nena graduated with a degree in education from Arizona State Teacher’s College (now ASU) and taught school while her husband served in the military during WWII. Rosemary Stillion
June 7, 1929 - December 28, 2018

It was a sad day for the family of Rosemary Stillion, who passed away on Friday, Dec 28, 2018. Mom lived a long wonderful life of 89 years. She is survived by her husband, Robert, who shared 71 wonderful years with her. They built a life they cherished.

Together they had three sons, David, Daniel, and Douglas; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer, Belinda, Alyson, Jeffrey, Whitney, Amber, Lucus, Aaron, Paul, Jayme, Christy, Keeley, and Elise; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Rosemary was born in Arkansas and came to Arizona with her Mom and Dad and six siblings in 1934 and settled in the Phoenix area. She met Robert at the age of 18 when he got out of the Navy, and they were married in 1947. She and Robert settled on the west side of Phoenix and made this their home for the next 67 years. To the very end, they held hands, smooched, and had to be in bed every night together up until their last night together on Christmas Eve. They had an amazing love story.

Rosemary is the last of her six siblings to pass. She has missed them dearly over the last 15 years and finally she is home with them and her parents, Claude and Virgie. She was gracious, loving, and caring with her family, even when her time was close.

Rose loved being a homemaker, wife, and mother. She loved being active in her kids’ activities like cub scouts, sports, and hosting her son’s many friends that came in and out of the house over the years. She loved taking trips with her young family. Her favorite trips were to San Diego, the White Mountains, and Yellowstone. Later in life, she cherished her trip with just her and Robert to Hawaii and loved her trips to Las Vegas with Robert to mingle with her huge family. Rose and Robert’s 70th Anniversary was so special last year as they celebrated their long love affair with the entire family.

Rose was known for her sweet nature but could also be very outspoken and funny. She loved to laugh. Once, on a trip to Vegas with her son David and daughter-in-law Debbie, doing a fun little question and answer game, Rose and Robert were asked, “If you could spend one night with someone and not feel any guilty feelings later, who would that be?” Robert quickly answered, “Why it would be with the lovely lady of course,” referring to Rose. Then when asked the same question, Rose immediately answered “Bill Clinton.” Of course, realizing what she had just said, she quickly said, “I would just want to talk – that’s all! But he is HOT!!” That brought on lots of laughter, as it often did when she laughed at herself.

Rosemary Stillion was a grand lady….who adored and was adored. We shall miss her all our days….

Alice Ann Hansen
December 19, 1928 - December 10, 2018

Alice Ann Hansen passed away in her home in Mesa, Arizona early Monday, December 10, 2018. She was a few days away from her 90th birthday.

With her passing the world lost a mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother, a teacher, a lover of books, but most of all a woman who loved people. She held no predetermined differentiation between races or genders, ages or accents. She welcomed into her home people from all backgrounds, religions, and points of view. She demonstrated a love for diversity, kindness, and wisdom, and was gracious to those who had not reached her level of maturity in those areas.

Her life began in Nebraska where she was the second in a family of seven children. Early on, the family relocated to Elk Horn, Iowa, where the Griffiths met the Hansen family, which would eventually change the course of many lives, and create the foundation for many more.

Alice graduated from Iowa State University in Ames with a degree in Education. In 1951 her first major adventure began as she and a friend took jobs in Washington D.C. working in the Department of the Navy. After working there for a few years, she returned to Iowa where she had accepted a teaching position. Alice married Kirk Hansen on June 10, 1954 and they began their lives together.

Five children were a product of their union, beginning with Heidi, then Pete, Erik, Chris, and Eve.

In 1972 the family moved to Mesa, Arizona, where Kirk was principal of Kino Junior High school for 22 years. There were many great years and memories developed in Mesa, where each of the kids graduated from Westwood High School. During this time, Alice worked as a Reading Resource Teacher for Mesa Public Schools. She retired in 1992.

Kirk passed away in 1994, and Alice became even more active in volunteering to tutor at her grandchildren’s schools, volunteering at St. Peter Lutheran Church, and for Meals on Wheels. For many years, Thursday afternoons were “kids’ day” at Alice’s house with many of her grandkids spending time together and with her at her home in Mesa.
