A Life Remembered

Obituary

Jack Tolman Christopherson

Jack Tolman Christopherson, age 95, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2026, in Mesa, Arizona. He was born on January 16, 1931, in Salem, Utah, to Clifford Vance Christopherson and Velma Margrette Tolman Christopherson.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents and his granddaughter, Angela Bagley.

He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Janet Anne McDowell Christopherson, whom he married in 1954; his siblings, Carol Christopherson Belnap, Severin Johnson, Elizabeth Toy, and Mary George; his children, Kary, Keven, Jana, Shawn, and Shane; as well as 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Jack proudly served in the United States Air Force for four years before beginning a long and distinguished career in aviation. He spent his early years farming and later managed a flying service, worked as a corporate pilot, served with Piper Aircraft, and became the Director of Aeronautics for the State of Arizona. He retired after several years with the Federal Aviation Administration.

A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jack faithfully served as Bishop of the Lehi 1st Ward in Mesa, Arizona, for five years.

Flying was Jack’s lifelong passion. He taught all of his sons to fly, and two went on to careers in aviation themselves. Throughout his life, he owned several airplanes, including a vintage Boeing Stearman that he especially loved flying with his children, often performing aerobatics. He also enjoyed air shows, car shows, museums, the Reno Air Races, exploring desert canyons, and gardening — particularly caring for his large collection of geraniums.

Jack will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, devotion to family, love of aviation, and the many lives he touched throughout his long and remarkable life.

A Celebration of Jack’s Life will be held Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 11-12 pm at Legacy Retirement, 5625 E. McKellips Road, Mesa, AZ 85215

I experienced the joy of being part of Jack and Janet's family when I became friends with their daughter Jana, I was always impressed with the strength of their family ties, kindness, spirituality and just plain old fun! What wonderful memories your family will have to you tide you over during this time of loss.

We sure loved growing up with the Christopher family. Jack was an amazing man and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. Love from the Martin Family

My earliest memory of Jack was when he was a senior at Blackfoot high school. He was a cheerleader, and I remember being in the kitchen while our mother and Jack dyed his saddle Oxfords green. I also remember wanting to sign his cast after his airplane accident. He didn’t let me. Of course, I wasn’t old enough to write. I also remember him telling me my jokes weren’t funny, and being concerned about taking me up in his airplane because I would get air sick. I think he cured me of that. I also helped on the farm a bit, he was always so kind and patient with me. I’m grateful I got to see him in February. I’ve learned so much from him, and will miss him.

Jack was the best older brother a girl could ever have. He was the most patient and kind person and I felt unconditional love from him. My first airplane ride was with him in his plane and I thought he was the most fascinating person in our family. His story telling abilities were incredible and we hung in every word he spoke. One of my most fond memories was when he stepped in to take me to the Primary Daddy Daughter Dance at church. Our dad wouldn’t go, so Jack saw I needed a “dad” to go with me and graciously took me. He kept a little girl’s heart (who was 23 years younger than he was) from breaking that night. I will love him forever!

Uncle Jack is who I was named after! I remember that the first and second times I was ever on an airplane, it was with Uncle Jack. He was such a good man and we loved to come visit. Until we meet again, Uncle Jack! Love you!

My earliest memory of Jack was in a full body cast after a plane accident west of Blackfoot, Idaho. He and Carol would drive me crazy when they’d come home from school and change my radio drama to music. Lots of time working with Jack on the farm, at Rockford Limber and as a line boy for Sinplot Aviation. Just a great big brother
