About Luther Franklin Wigginton

Luther Franklin Wigginton, age 90, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2025, in Mesa, Arizona.

Luther was born on September 25, 1935, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the youngest of four children born to Luther Albert Wigginton and Elizabeth Jane Hobbs Wigginton. During his early childhood, Luther’s family moved from Salt Lake City to San Mateo, California, where he lived until the end of World War II. While attending high school, the family relocated to Mojave, California, where Luther graduated from Antelope Valley High School in Lancaster, California.

After graduation, Luther met his eternal companion, Leona Marie Evans. They were married on September 7, 1955, in Mojave, California, and were later sealed for time and all eternity in the St. George Utah Temple on December 7, 1968. Luther proudly served in the United States Army beginning in 1958 and was stationed in North Carolina. After his military service, he returned to California and worked in the family auto body shop alongside his father and brothers. Following the closure of the shop, Luther moved to Wyoming in 1979, where he worked as a claims adjuster for Allstate Insurance Company and later Sears until his retirement.

In 2008, Luther and Leona moved to Monticello, Utah. After suffering a stroke in 2018, Luther relocated to Mesa, Arizona, to be closer to his children, where he remained until his passing. Luther was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and faithfully served in many callings, including counselor in the bishopric, ward clerk, stake missionary, Sunday School president, and numerous others. Luther was a man of many talents. He loved working on and painting cars, woodworking, and could fix just about anything that broke. If he didn’t know how to do something, he learned how. He especially enjoyed working with his hands and volunteered assembling handcarts for the Martin’s Cove Visitors Center, as well as building kitchen cabinets for homes on Church agricultural fields in Blythe, California.

Luther was preceded in death by his four sons—Timmy Franklin, and triplets Terry Dale, Tracey Allen, and Teddy Wayne—his brother James (Jim) Doyle Wigginton, and his parents. He is survived by his loving wife, Leona Marie Wigginton; five children: Tommy (Linda) Wigginton, Cindy (Tony) Cassinat, Wendy (Mike) Lindholm, Gary (Jenny) Wigginton, and Kimberly (Samuel) Burchard; 24 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren soon to be born.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints 830 E. Lehi Rd. Mesa, Az 85203.  A viewing will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., followed by a family prayer. Interment will take place at the National Veterans Cemetery of Arizona 2929 E. Pinnacle Peak Rd. Phoenix, Az 85024 on December 23, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Luther’s name to xpfamilysupport.org, honoring his grandson Collin, who lives with Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP).
