David Warren Hastings came into this world on February 13, 1944 in St. David, AZ. – born of goodly parents William Grant and Mary Stella Hastings who he honored all his life.
Dave didn’t care much for chit chat and nonsense but he appreciated good conversation and he highly valued his family, faith and hard work. If you were to draw attention to his immensely kind heart, his integrity, his work ethic, his devotion to the Lord, or any of his other endearing characteristics like his bright blue eyes or engaging smile, he would shift the attention to how beautiful his wife, Norma, was or how talented and good his children, Sheri, Shawn, Shannon, Sonny, Scott, Sandi, Spencer, and Sterling were. He would draw your attention to how great his sons-in-law and daughters-in-law were. He would tell you how proud he was of his 30 grandchildren, and 1 1/2 great grandchildren. Nothing gave him more joy than his family. Well, his family and roping. His family and roping and George Strait. Ok, his family, roping, George Strait, good steak and teaching his children and other boys how to work.
His wife, Norma, says of him “Dave lifted me to be my best self. He always enjoyed life and got the most out of it. From great expectations of his children and grandchildren – to working hard and always doing his best in whatever he did. He is an exceptional man and husband who simply appreciates the beauty of all kinds and loved to share good things – like the beautiful full moon, the sunset, the wonderful view of the mountains and especially the gospel of Jesus Christ. I love him with all my heart.”
Throughout his life, Dave was often frustrated by his inability to articulate what was in his heart. Those who knew him didn’t need to be told. Dave lived it. Dave knew “the difference between living and living well.” His love was unreserved, evident and immense. His testimony of and love for Jesus Christ was reflected in all he quietly did. Dave was the epitome of a loving husband, father, Papa, and above all, a follower of Jesus Christ. Look at his family who knew him best – watch how their eyes light up and their smiles can’t be contained when they talk about their favorite cowboy. That’s all you need to see to know who Dave Hastings truly was.
Dave peacefully passed away May 10, 2021 at 10:52pm in his home surrounded by his wife of 53 years and ALL of his children. Thoughtful to the last, Dave rode his Gator off into the sunset just in time for his daughter, Sharlene’s birthday. She had been waiting for him in heaven since returning there as an infant. They are together now, waiting for the rest of us to join them in the “eternal” arena!
Preceded in death by his parents, William Grant and Mary Stella Hastings, brother Bob and daughter, Sharlene. Survived by wife, Norma, 8 children, 30 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and sister Ann Maready.
The family would love to have any memories and stories shared to davehastingsmemories@gmail.com

Lynda Kay Williamson, beloved sister, wife, mother, and grandmother was born on April 9th, 1951 in Payson, Utah. She was the second child of Ronald and Beulah Backus and grew up with three brothers and one sister. She was a true Arizonan through and through. Mesa was her home from the time she was a toddler until she left to attend college at Brigham Young University in Provo when she was 19. She had several adventures such as working at the Grand Canyon as well as in Alaska before she met Craig and got married in 1972 at age 21. Her life from the beginning was greatly influenced by being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She was very active in church activities, girls’ camps and callings while growing up, and gave many hours to the Young Women, Relief Society and Primary over the years. She always was strong in her faith and was a consistent example to her family of loving the Lord and living her testimony of the gospel. One of her last great adventures was serving a church mission together with Craig for 18 months in China.
Lynda’s whole life was full and busy, and aside from raising 8 children, traveling the world, and living for a time in Rhode Island, Singapore, and Hong Kong, what stands out the most is that she was always working on some fun, creative project. She had the ability to make grand things out of whatever materials could be found to work with – a skill she enjoyed so much and put to use in a way that helped so many people. She made all kinds of things for her children and grandchildren, things for the community, and things for every church ward and stake she was in. Sets for plays, backdrops for weddings, decorations for parties, and chandeliers for charity. If you needed it, she could make it. Music was also something she loved and passed on – she will be remembered for bedtime songs, road trip singing, and her unforgettable talents as a Primary chorister. She was an avid reader and devoured books constantly. Family was everything to her as evidenced by all the love and time she gave as a wife and a full-time mom and grandma. Her influence on us all runs deep, and our memories of her will be with us always.
Lynda passed away at her home in Queen Creek, AZ on May 7th, 2021 with Craig by her side, after several years of living with the difficult challenges of Alzheimer’s. She had just turned 70 a few weeks before and got to enjoy one last big birthday party with the family.
Lynda is survived by her husband, Craig, and her eight children: Tonya, Terri, Scott, Todd, Kimberly, Mark, Jeffrey, and Shelley; also by her brothers Jim, John, and Joseph, and her sister DeeAnn. She has 41 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Donald Neils Evans
November 23, 1946 – May 4, 2021
Beloved husband, father, brother, and papa, Donald Neils Evans, 74, of Mesa, passed away on May 4th, 2021, after a lengthy struggle with heart disease, Parkinson’s, and their complications. A friend to everyone, Don spread joy by sharing a silly joke or offering a listening ear. Any ailment could be healed with a root beer float or a giant bowl of popcorn when it was served with love.
Don was born to N. Grant and Adela Evans of Lakeshore, UT. His father’s untimely death and his mother’s illnesses thrust the responsibility for maintaining the family farm on the four Evans youngsters. Alongside his siblings, he learned humility, the value of work, and the strength of community.
As a teenager, Don met his forever love, Kathy Christensen, at church. Their young love bloomed, and Don and Kathy were wed in the Salt Lake Temple on September 5, 1968, soon after Don returned from serving in the Gulf States Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He enrolled at Utah State University in Logan, UT, where he received a BS in Business and Agriculture, then he joined the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant while working in intelligence then as a recruiter.
In the following years, the family welcomed four children, eventually settling in Mesa, Arizona. Don was called as bishop of their ward from 1987 to 1992. Known for his unconditional love, he faithfully served his ward, sometimes sacrificing his own comfort to meet another’s needs. He seemed to walk with angels, speaking with the spirit and innately knowing how best to help his ward members.
At home, Don found joy in gardening, building his model train, and playing with his children and grandchildren. He could often be found flipping pancakes or burgers for family dinners, pushing swings at the park for his grandchildren, or offering advice and a blessing to calm a worried adult child.
Don is survived by his wife of fifty-two years, Kathy; his children, Brant Evans (Nichole) of Gilbert, D’Net Layton (Paul) and Corey Evans (Lori) of Mesa, and Maguen Wilhelm (Todd) of San Tan Valley; his siblings Lee Evans (Linda), Jay Evans (Marla), Audra Thorpe (Charles); and nineteen precious grandchildren. Services, facilitated by Bunker Family Funerals, will be held at 11:00 am on May 12, 2021, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1007 S 72nd St, Mesa, AZ, 85208. Interment will be the following day at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Humanitarian Fund for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, online at give.ChurchofJesusChrist.org/humanitarian-aid , or by mail, Philanthropies, 1450 N. University Ave., Provo, UT 84604.
Belinda Jo (Hardy) Wood passed away unexpectedly early Monday morning, May 3, 2021 at 51 years old. The youngest of five children, Belinda brought unexpected luck to her family when she was born on Friday, March 13, 1970, in Portland, Oregon. The rambunctious curly, blonde was affectionately called Buffy very early on, and the name stuck most of her childhood.
Her early childhood was spent in Gresham, Oregon, but started 9th grade in Arizona when her family moved to Mesa. Belinda briefly attended Brigham Young University, and later became a nail technician.
Belinda inherited her family’s love of music and started singing with her older sisters at a very young age. She sang her first solo at age 10, and went on to pursue professional vocal training, competed in voice competitions, performed on the radio, sang in local clubs and recorded a few songs.
Belinda married Brad Wood April 19, 1996 – just celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. Belinda found most joy as a full-time mom to her two daughters, Taylor (20) and Makenzie (18). She loved all children and they loved her. She was a favorite aunt to her 14 nieces and nephews—and was looking forward to the day she would become a grandmother.
Along with her husband and daughters, Belinda is survived by her brother, Brad Hardy, and sister, Becky Kelly. She was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Myrna Hardy, her brother, Brian Hardy and sister, Brenda Hardy.
Philip Thelmer Hyink was born on August 8, 1932 in Hospers, IA to Lawrence and Matilda (Groen) Hyink.
He worked on his parent’s farm growing up and then worked on neighboring farms and with an electrician. He told of how he was totally out of money and almost out of gas in his car. The electrician was hiring and said he knew a little about it. The owner soon knew he didn’t know much but he worked so hard that day he let him continue working for $1.00 a day which was a big raise from his last job. The owner even paid him the first day so he could put gas in his car.
Phil married Jeanine Margaret Westall on November 9, 1950, at her parent’s farm home in Winifred SD.
When the Korean War broke out, Phil was drafted and sent to basic training in California. On June 19, 1953 Phil was injured badly as a result of action with enemy forces. He told of laying out in the open thinking of his mom and Jeanine reciting the 23rd Psalm before losing consciousness. Fellow service men came to rescue him with heroic efforts. He spent several months in a hospital in Japan. He didn’t receive his discharge until August 21, 1954 but was awarded the Korean Service Medal Bronze Service Star, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Purple Heart. His brothers and sister call him their hero.
When Phil was reunited with Jeanine after the Korean War, they lived on a farm south of Winfred. While living in that area, Jeanine gave birth to their first son, David Lawrence, on September 21, 1955, and daughter, Nancy Jo, on August 11, 1958.
Then, after a tough year of farming in South Dakota, moved to Long Prairie, MN where his sister Leora lived with her husband Gene. They bought a farm and 25 milk cows. There is where Jeanine gave birth to their second son, Keith Allen, on March 3, 1963.
After Phil became terribly allergic to all aspects of farming, they moved to Zumbrota MN where he attended Tech school. That schooling won him a mechanics position for Jensen & Gas Implement in 1965 at Arlington, SD. Later in life Phil and Jeanine decided to start their own business and ran the Texaco station until they purchased Sieck’s Service Station He sold gas, serviced cars and also learned the art of fixing radiators. While living in Arlington, Phil was very active with the American Legion. He serviced as Commander and spent many hours preparing and serving at mountain oyster feeds along many activities sponsored by the Legion.
After visiting their two sons in Mesa Arizona they came home, sold their house and moved to Mesa in 2000. Phil did maintenance for Good Shepherd Care Facility and was very active at Church of the Master. Phil volunteered to prepare and cook for the Wednesday night kid’s programs and spent many hours buying and distributing food to the needy for the church’s food program.
During the Covid outbreak Phil became high risk for falling so he moved into a group home and rented his house. His family was able to see him every Saturday in the garage of the home or in the park nearby. On April 16th, he was rushed to the hospital with an infection that was all throughout his body and he was not able to fight it even with antibiotics. He took his last breaths on May 1, 2021, while David and Lori were with him on Saturday morning.
