Janero (JC) Cortese passed away on November 8, 2023.  He was born on 1/9/1969, in Cortland, NY.

He is survived by his mother, Gail Cortese of Gilbert, AZ, brother, Rudy of Leicester, NC, son, Cody Cortese, daughter, Kailee Cortese, and grandchildren Giovanni, Waylon, and Emelina.  Also survived by son, Josh Davis and grandchildren.  His father, Rodolfo Cortese, had predeceased him.  In addition, he has numerous cousins, aunts, and uncles. nieces and nephews who loved him.

He was the Arizona State Junior Fiddle Champion going on to be the Arizona State Fiddle Champion and Four Corners State Champion.  He played with the Band Young Country and also briefly toured with Kenney Chesney.

When he could. JC would fish for those elusive large mouth bass and ride his motorcycle.

He lived a full life, but battled along the way, having beat leukemia and prior strokes.

But the Lord had plans for him and took him from us too soon to be with his family and other friends to play music. ride free and fish forever.

JC, we miss you, we love you, play on.

Beloved husband, father and grandfather, William “Dusty” Hale, 82, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, November 3, 2023 from causes related to age. His gentle nature, good humor and loving heart will be greatly missed.

William Marquess Hale was born in Carlsbad, New Mexico on April 18, 1941, an extremely windy day. When his uncle Earl stopped by the hospital–after delivering mail all day in a dust storm–he playfully asked, “Where is the little dusty baby?” and the nickname stuck.

Little Dusty spent most of his grade school years in Iowa City. In sixth grade, his family returned to New Mexico and bought a home in Albuquerque. Dusty (no longer little at 6 ft 3”) graduated from Highland High School (‘59) and attended the University of New Mexico for one year. He enlisted in the Navy and served for 4 years as a Fire Control Technician attaining the rank of Petty Officer Second Class. Dusty continued his studies at New Mexico State University and Colorado School of Mines. In 1966, just after his 25th birthday, Dusty was baptized as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a moment that changed and blessed his life forever.

In the summers between school, Dusty worked for the Boy Scouts of America at Camp Zia near Cuba, NM. He met a local rancher, Ross Bartlett, at church and the two became fast friends. That fall, his new friend was in a bad tractor accident and Dusty dropped his schooling to go live at Circle A Ranch and help the Bartlett family. He loved living the cowboy life and even more, loved the new female pen pal from Utah the rancher’s wife had introduced him to! After only four months of writing–and meeting once in person–Dusty sent roses and proposed in a letter that inadvertently arrived on April Fools Day. Nan originally thought it must be a joke, but their marriage in the Salt Lake Temple in September 1968 proved otherwise. The newlyweds moved to Seattle, Washington with the intention of Dusty finishing his schooling in oceanography. While gaining residency, Dusty got a job using his skills from the Navy at Dictaphone Corporation, servicing recording machines. He decided to stay with the company, and in 1973 was offered a manager position in Salt Lake City, Utah, which he took to live closer to family.

Granger, later made West Valley City, was Dusty’s home for all but the last two years of his life. He and Nan were blessed with one daughter, Cassandra, and were foster parents for several more. Most notably was Teri Anderegg, a 5-year-old autistic girl, who came and stayed in their loving care for 40 years. Dusty enjoyed entertaining the girls and their friends (and later, his grandchildren), setting up trampolines, swingsets and swimming pools, pulling them around the neighborhood in the snow on a sled behind the DUSTMAN truck, and going on family vacations. His health finally required him to leave his home of 48 years. We offer a big thanks to the amazing staff at Legacy Village of Taylorsville who cared for him like family, kept him social, and snuck in Dr Pepper. You gave him another 16 months of life to enjoy afterwards in Mesa, Arizona with his family!

Dusty was a collector of many things: candles, clocks, office supplies, decks of cards, Halloween candy, electronics, nature’s treasures, state quarters, matchbooks, and was well known for his impressive VHS and DVD collection. Dusty’s hobbies included building model rockets, photography, camping, sports, target shooting, recording the weather, keeping up with the latest technology, watching movies at home (usually with a cat in his lap), and listening to self-improvement courses. He loved working with the Scouts, doing family history and serving in many callings at church.

In his later years, Dusty enjoyed the simple things in life like visits with family, going for walks, playing ball with dogs, watching the birds, card games, ice cream, looking for the moon, and holding hands with his sweetheart while watching Highway to Heaven. He never said no to eating out, especially when burgers or enchiladas were involved, and found places like Walmart magical. Despite his increasing dementia and health problems, Dusty remained kind, amenable and cheerful (only giving Nan a hard time occasionally).

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nan Colvin Hale; daughter Cassandra “Cassie” (Travis) Stuart; four beloved grandchildren, Sydney (Preston) Spaulding, Chandler (Danielle), Lilly and Charlotte; three great-grandsons, Jacob, Walter and Matthew Spaulding, and his two younger brothers, David (Becky) and Steve (Debi) Hale.

Dusty was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia Lee Marquess and William Edward Hale of Albuququere, NM; his two infant brothers, Donald and Jeffrey; and many beloved aunts, uncles, grandparents and pets.

A celebration of life with his extended family will be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Interment in Provo City Cemetery, Utah.

Dusty loved being around animals and children; he would do anything to keep them safe and happy. If you feel so inclined, he would be honored by donations to your favorite local animal shelter or children’s hospital.

On November 5, 2023 we lost our dear precious son, Ethan Douglas Jun Sheldon to a rare genetic condition. He was a fighter through it all, but in the end lost the battle.

Ethan was born in China and came home to his adoptive family and home in July 2004.

Ethan graduated from Mountain View High School in 2021 where he excelled academically, played cello in orchestra, and was a stand-out participant in Model UN.

He was working for a company that does duct sealing and cleaning. He loved his job and co-workers and was talking about getting his own apartment someday soon. He was a brilliant, outgoing kid with a great smile and an engaging personality. He enjoyed being with friends and family, playing on-line video games, travel, and outdoors.

He will be forever missed and loved by his mom (Deb Sheldon), dad (Steve Sheldon), sister (Hannah Sheldon) and all of his family and friends.

Raith Clifford Adair, 60, of Mesa, Arizona, passed away from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at his home in Mesa with his sweet wife, Tori, by his side.

Raith was the first child born to Ronald Edward Adair and Bess Peterson on April 17, 1963, in Phoenix, Arizona. Raith was raised surrounded by his aunts, uncles, and cousins, who considered him more of a brother than a cousin. There are many fond memories of growing up together and supporting each other.

Raith graduated from Camelback High School in Phoenix. He played baseball at Yavapai College in Prescott, Arizona, and the University of Texas at El Paso. Raith excelled in softball, playing among the best players in the United States.

On August 21, 1992, Raith was married to Tori Ellen Gibbons in the Mesa, Arizona Temple. Nothing was more important to Raith than his family and he enjoyed spending time with Tori and their five amazing children. Coaching, practicing, and watching them play sports was his greatest pastime.

When Raith had an interest in something, he loved to share it with others, whether it was baseball, the gospel, or a healthy snack. It was apparent that he was passionate about the important things in life.

Raith worked for Arizona Public Service and Salt River Project as a Journeyman Electric Meterman. When he was diagnosed with ALS, his colleagues rallied around him with love and support. They would often stop by for lunch and a visit after his early retirement. Raith will leave behind numerous people who loved him and considered him a great friend. His smile, his laugh, and his friendship will be deeply missed.

Raith is survived by his beautiful wife Tori, his daughter Alexandria (Austin), his sons Ronnie (Mahala), RJ (Kaitlyn), Ryan (Thaya), and Ryder. He is also survived by his adorable grandsons Rocky, Brody,Johnny, and Jeremy. Raith is survived by his nephew, Rory and his niece, Alisha, his Aunt Thelma Paulson, his Uncles Jack, Derl, and Scott Peterson, and numerous cousins, who love him dearly.

Raith was preceded in death by his parents, Ronald and Bess, and his sister, Tara. We’re sure it’s been a wonderful family reunion.

We believe that God gives the strongest soldiers the toughest battles, and Raith will always be our hero who bravely fought to the end.

Memorial Services will be held on Friday, October 27, 2023, with the viewing beginning at 11:00 am and the service at 12:00 noon.

In Loving Memory of Carma Lee Wilson

Carma Wilson, a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away at home on October 31, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Born on December 27, 1942, Carma’s life exemplified the principles of love, service, and devotion to her faith.

Carma was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her devoted husband, David Wilson, and her cherished children: Michael, Ronda, Emily, Valerie, and Steven. Her family was her greatest joy, and she leaves behind a legacy of love and unity that will continue to strengthen future generations.

Carma has been welcomed back home by her three daughters, Audra, Lori Ann, and Sarah Rae who preceded her in passing. Their spirits are now reunited for eternity.

In addition to her role as a dedicated mother and wife, Carma served as a teacher’s assistant for 35 years, where she worked passionately with children with special needs. Her commitment to these children and their unique challenges touched the lives of many and reflected her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ.

Carma was not only a loving mother but also a great cook. She was known for making the best bread, using wheat she ground herself. Her homemade bread was a symbol of her love and nourishment for her family. During Christmas, she delighted everyone with her homemade fudge, becoming a cherished holiday tradition.

Carma had a great sense of humor and even kept us laughing to the end. Her laughter and lightheartedness brightened the lives of those around her, making every moment with her a joyful one.

Carma was so youthful and spunky, with a zest for life that was contagious. Her vibrant spirit and enthusiasm for every day were truly remarkable.

A funeral service to celebrate Carma’s life will be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at 11:00 a.m with a viewing for friends at 10:00 a.m. at the LDS chapel located at 1249 South 48th Street, Mesa, AZ 85206. Friends and family are invited to join in remembering the life of a remarkable woman who exemplified the principles of faith, family, and service.

The Wilson family extends their gratitude for the support and love received during this difficult time.

Carma Wilson’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing and loving her. She will be deeply missed and always remembered for her faith, love, humor, selflessness, and dedication to her faith and eternal family.

Carma’s final resting place will be at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Caldwell, Idaho.

Glen M Graybill Sr., age 79 of Mesa, AZ. passed away peacefully Sunday night October 29^th, 2023 with his daughter Payson and Granddaughter Haley by his side.

Born of parents Robert M. Graybill and Emma E. Graybill on September 4^th 1944 in Chester, PA. He is proceeded in death by three brothers. Bobby Graybill, Larry C. Graybill, and stepbrother Roger Lee Walter. Glen is survived by son Glen M. Graybill Jr (Audrey), Mesa, AZ., son Wayne J. Graybill (Diane), Gilbert, AZ., daughter Crystal M. Harmon-Graybill (Robert), Ruther Glen, VA., son Collin St. Cyr Horseshoe Bend, ID., daughter Payson C. Graybill, Boise, ID., 9 grandkids Alexandra, Garrett, Austin, Ashlynn, Chase, Lane, Destiny, Haley and Alizabeth and 4 great grandkids.

Ten days after graduating from West Snider High School in 1962, while the Vietnam War was underway, Glen enlisted in the US Air Force.  In September 1965, Glen was assigned and worked in conjunction with the First Air Cavalry Division (Army) as a Forward Air Controller, which meant he controlled the air strikes against the enemy from either ground level or by Piper Cub on the front line with limited to no protection. He also bravely volunteered as a Door Gunner on a Huey Helicopter. Both efforts resulted in military medals. Glen was awarded the Air Medal after completing 25 successful air combat missions, followed by The Army Commendation Medal two months after leaving the service. Upon exiting the military in June of 1966, Glen started attending West Chester State College.

January 1967, Glen married Irma Lou Craft. It was at that point in time, he decided to get back into electronics and began his career as a Computer Field Engineer. His career took him and his family to Chicago for four years, then a transfer in 1976 brought them to Arizona. In 1984, Glen and Irma divorced and he took on the responsibility of the children. In 1990, Glen married Margot St. Cyr and transferred from Arizona to Idaho. It was in the small town of Emmett ID., where he bought land and began building their home. Once completed, with her four children and his son Wayne, they moved in.  Glen and Margot divorced in 2008. In 2020, when the house became too large for him alone, he moved back to Arizona.

Anna Spracale, Candioto, Marshall, Rodriguez

On the morning  of October 25^th , 2023, at the age of 98,  Anna Rodriguez passed away peacefully.

Anna was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on September 2, 1925 to Salvatore and Gaetana “Anna” (Loschiavo) Spracale. Her parents passed way when she was young so, she was raised by her grandparents.

At the age of 30, she married John Candioto.  In time, they moved to Mesa, Arizona. She was a founding member of Resurrection Church in Tempe, Arizona. In the 1970s and 1980s she helped in the nursery during mass.  She was a member of the Trinity Prayer community for many years.  For a very long time she made bandages for the missions.  She also helped as a money counter at church.

Ann loved playing Bingo and going to the casino with her friends. She was a kind and loving person and she lived a long full life.  She will be dearly missed.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Joseph and Augustina Loschiavo, Her parents, Salvatore and Gaetana “Anna”(Loschiavo) Spracale  and all of her siblings, Anthony (Josephine) Spracale of California, Mary (Samuel) Messina, Giacomo “Jack” (Lillian) Spracale, Stefano “Steve” Spracale,  Agostina “Christine” (Edward) Lendel, Rosa Spracale, Josephine (Alfred) Lehman, Samuel (Clara) Spracale, all of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and James (Helen) Spracale of Tempe, Arizona.

Also preceding her in death were her husband’s, John Candioto, Harry Marshall and Don Rodriguez.

We are sad to announce the passing of Gilda Flores Pheuphong. She died at age 76 on the 30th of October, 2023 in Mesa, Arizona.

She is survived by her two daughters, four grandchildren, sister and brothers.

Our husband, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, & friend, Ron Peters, has completed his mission on Earth & was called home on October 29, 2023. He was born October 4, 1948 in Leavenworth, WA. He was adopted into a loving family at 6 weeks of age by, Roger William & Merlin Katherine Peters in Wenatchee, WA.

Ron lived an exceptional life. He graduated high school in 1966. Ron then served a faithful mission in Sweden for 2 years where he learned to make his famous Swedish pancakes. After he came home, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1970. He was honorably discharged in 1976. He served on the USS Blue Ridge, as a radio mechanics technician. He served in the Gulf of Tonkin for 39 months. Ron received the National Defense Service medal, Vietnam Service medal, Combat Action ribbon, & First Good Conduct award for period ending in 1974.

He married his wife, Debra Peters, after a 10 day courtship on August 23, 1982 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. They were sealed for all time & eternity on September 9, 1983 in the Seattle, WA. Temple. They moved to Mesa, AZ in 1988.

Ron loved going fishing & camping, he had a huge love for tinkering with computers, cameras, televisions, anything electronic. He was an entrepreneur, an electrician & a published author. Ron was a very creative thinker, he knew how to crochet, knit, sew, build almost anything, he had a green thumb for gardening with his loved ones, he was very talented and had many hobbies.

Ron is survived by his wife of 43 years, Debra Peters. As well as, two children, Lorette Hawkins & William Twitchell Jr. Ron is also survived by four grandchildren, Justin, Anna, Hollie & Cory. Also, four great-grandchildren, Nicole, Jesse, Roy & Thomas. Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Roger & Merlin Peters, his sister, Kathy Brummett, & a granddaughter, Heather Matteson.

Eric Stephen Keller, was born on April 14, 1951, in Los Angeles CA when his parents were attending college there, and passed away on September 28, 2023 in Scottsdale, AZ at the age of 72, after a very difficult 5 week hospital stay.

Eric was the oldest of 7 children, and was a dear, wonderful person, who loved exploring, mild hiking, and camping in his younger years. His great loves were Pipe Organs and classical music, and he once had the priceless opportunity to play the Tabernacle Organ on Temple Square in Salt Lake City. He also loved to travel and was able to see and experience this beautiful world. His life was spent enjoying music, attending concerts and concertos all over the world, and he had a great talent for directing and composing as well as playing the pipe organ and piano.

Eric was adamant about recycling, protecting natural resources, and was very frugal. He was a valiant member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and had a strong testimony of his Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ. If one truly got to know him, and saw past his disabilities and challenges, they learned to love his intellect, his amazing memory and ability to recall dates, events and places, and learned to appreciate his personality, his character and attributes, his great knowledge of music and history, and his passion for being a teacher to children with special needs.

Eric was preceded in death by his parents; Neal Stephen Keller and Gaynor Louise Woodland Keller, his dear partner Franc deWeeger, his sister Lucinda Keller Yost and brother-in-law Bob Yost. Also, by his nephew Richard N. Worthen, and nieces Cassie Keller and Traci Yost, a great niece; Gracie and a great nephew; Reid. He is survived by his sisters Stephany Keller Worthen and Kristina Keller-Wilczek, and his younger brothers Mark, Wallace and Matthew Keller and numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews whom he cherished.

He will be sorely missed and dearly remembered as our dear brother, uncle, cousin, friend, and partner who had a gracious & loving heart of gold, lived in gratitude for all his blessings, and who loved his family & friends dearly. His caring demeanor and kind ways will be sorely missed and forever remembered.

Ana Leticia Bran passed away peacefully at the age of 75 surrounded by her family on October 29th, 2023, in Mesa, Arizona. She was born February 20th, 1948, in Santa Elena, Usulután, El Salvador, daughter of Juan Jose Bran and Graciela Olimpia Romero. She was the oldest of ten children, and the matriarch of her family.

After losing her mom at a young age, she immigrated to the United States in 1974. She established a new life and opportunities for her family in Los Angeles, California, where she worked as a housekeeper. In California, Ana enjoyed taking her family to Griffith Park to barbecue; the activity later became a fond memory they all shared. In 1991, Ana and her two children made the move to Phoenix, Arizona. In 1997, she accomplished the American Dream and purchased her home in Mesa, Arizona, where she lived the rest of her life. In Mesa, she became a grandmother to seven grandchildren, whom she helped raise as her own.

She is survived by her two children, Miguel and Carmen, her seven grandchildren, Miguel Angel (Mickey), Luis, Kiara, Joseph, Ana, Matthew, and Marcelo. She was predeceased by her parents, Papa Juan and Mama Chela, as well as her younger brother Mario.

Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Harriet Ann Rush, peacefully passed away on October 27, 2023, with her best friend and eternal companion, Charlie, by her side.

Harriet was born to Glen and Ruth Crandell on June 27, 1937, in Clay Springs, AZ. She was the sixth of eight children: Dutch, Kathryn, Glenna, Julia, Delbert, Donovan, and J.R. Crandell. Harriet is preceded in death by her parents and siblings except Delbert, Julia, and J.R. who will dearly miss their sister, Hadget (as they called her). Harriet adored her large, loving, hard-working family growing up in the mountains of Arizona and New Mexico.

Young Harriet took a big chance on a rough soldier on April 11, 1953, by marrying him. His military career took them to many places around the world, where she was often on her own raising a large family, but the road eventually led them back to Mesa, AZ. Charlie and Harriet recently celebrated their 70^th wedding anniversary—an amazing testament to their love for each other.

Harriet’s greatest joy in life was her family. During their more than 70 years together, Charlie and Harriet welcomed 6 children into the world: Dan (Judi) Rush, Pam (Brent) Spencer, Joan (Jay) James, Tom (Kaye) Rush, Jackie (Kirt) Davis, and Jeff (Charlotte) Rush. They have been blessed with 31 grandchildren and 75 great-grandchildren (this number continues to grow). You could rarely find her without a grandbaby snuggled in her arms.

Harriet lived a wonderful life of service and devotion. She served faithfully in various callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including a full-time mission in the Washington DC area and many years working in the Mesa Arizona Temple. Everything in her life revolved around her family and her devotion to the Lord.

Our sweet Harriet will be remembered for how she loved genuinely and generously, for how particular she was with so many aspects of her life, for how gracefully she carried herself, and for how positive she was—never wanting to put anyone out. We look forward to the day we reunite with her again, hear her voice, and give her a tight hug and kiss.

Karl Joseph Nielson, age 95, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2023.  Karl was born on January 4, 1928, in Mesa, AZ to Dr. Hyrum Joseph Nielson and Emma Grace Rogers Nielson.

Karl’s life was exceptional.  At age 15, Karl enlisted in the United States Navy where he served in WWII as a Naval Gunner on the Battleship USS California.  After the war, Karl attended Mesa High School where he played football for the Mesa High Jackrabbits.  During that time, Karl met the love of his life, Georgia Mae Blevins.  In 1949, Karl and Georgia married, started a family, and celebrated 73 years of marriage together.

In 1947, Karl opened Bakepaint Body Shop in Phoenix, and later opened a second location in Cave Creek. His success led to the creation of many other businesses including Priceless Corporation, Best Auto Parts, and Multi-Unit Apartments.  Along the way, Karl returned to college and received a degree from Mesa Community College.

Karl was an amazing athlete, outdoorsman, and pilot. He excelled in Fast Pitch Softball where he pitched 58 no-hitters and served as President of the International Softball Congress. Karl was later inducted into 3 Halls of Fame: Mesa, Prescott, and Wisconsin. Karl was also an avid golfer. He was a member of Mesa Country Club for more than 50 years, and White Mountain Country Club in Pinetop AZ where he served as President. He was also a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.

Karl loved giving back to the community. Karl was a member of the LDS church. Later in life, Karl and Georgia served in the Papago Ward for 17 years. Karl was also a member of the Mesa Hohokam’s for 43 years.

Karl loved his family and friends, making everyone around him feel loved and special.  Karl met every challenge in life with optimism and humor. He was kind, loving, and generous.

Karl was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia, parents Hyrum and Emma, brothers Wayne, Clyde, and Douglas, and sisters Norma and Helen. Karl is survived by his seven children; Georgine Nielson, Kirk Nielson (Deneen), Dr. Karla Carlson, Sherrie Coker (Randy), Craig Nielson, Kent Nielson (Barbara), and Keith Nielson. Karl was blessed with 17 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

A viewing with a family greeting will be held Thursday, November 2^nd, 2023, at Bunkers Mortuary, 33 N Centennial Way in Mesa from 5 to 7 p.m.  A military burial will take place graveside on Friday, November 3^rd, 2023, at Mesa Cemetery at 10 a.m.

Tommy Rex Cogswell passed away on October 19, 2023. A Mesa native, Tom was born February 28, 1950 and raised in citrus groves in the local area. He was a long time maintenance specialist for Mesa Public Schools. A real joy for Tom was professionally playing Santa Claus for many seasons around the valley. He is lovingly survived by his wife, Lorna, sons Jeff and Adam, and grandson Bobby. Tom is also survived by siblings Denny and Darryl.

Loved and respected by all who knew him, Tom’s gentle spirit and infectious smile will be missed. Memorial service will be held at 10am on Oct 27th at the LDS church on 1430 N. Recker RD, Mesa, AZ 85205.

Naoma Fuller Shumway passed away peacefully and quietly in the early morning hours of Saturday, October 21, 2023, in her home. She was ninety-two years old. Naoma was born on May 20, 1931, in Thatcher, Arizona to Reuben Walter Fuller, Jr. and Ama Taylor Fuller. She was the youngest of ten children and was the last surviving member of her family. Naoma had four brothers and five sisters: Harold, Walter, Delbert, Carvel, Alona, Priscilla and Druscilla (twins), Viola, and Caroline. Three of her sisters died in infancy: the twins and Caroline. At the time of Naoma’s birth her mother was forty years old and her “Daddy” was forty-one.

A name hadn’t been chosen when her record of birth was sent to Phoenix, Arizona, thus her birth certificate read “Baby Girl Fuller.” Her mother desired that her name be Grace. However, her Grandfather Fuller would be the one to give her a name and a blessing. He stated, “I’m going to bless her and give her her name.” She was given the name Naoma Fuller for Naomi in the Bible. Of her name, Naoma wrote, “Later in my life I had it revealed in a dream why he named me for Naomi. He wanted me to be strong in my convictions with an unwavering testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ and His Church which He established on the earth.”

Naoma spent her early childhood in Thatcher. Following her freshman year of high school, she moved with her parents to Tempe, Arizona. Being the youngest, Naoma was very spoiled, and she would always be the first one to tell you so.

Naoma attended Tempe High School. She excelled in sports. Naoma was the President of the Girl’s Athletic Association, a member of National Honor Society, and the Drama Club. She was the head of the Pep Squad at Tempe High. She lettered in volleyball, basketball, and softball. She was a delegate to the first Girls’ State of Arizona.

Following graduation from high school, Naoma enrolled in summer school at Arizona State College as a physical education major. While in college, she continued her passion for sports participating in badminton, volleyball, basketball, and softball. She also participated in dance concerts having taken tap dancing and modern dancing.

Naoma’s love of sports continued throughout her life. She supported her children in all their activities and enjoyed following college and professional sports. Naoma was an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and for others. She was an accomplished homemaker. Naoma was skilled in sewing, cooking, cleaning, organizing, decorating and anything to do with creating a beautiful home. One of her favorite hymns was “Love at Home” and Naoma was dedicated to creating a loving home. She always made those who entered her home feel welcome and loved. Naoma was devoted to her husband and their family.

During Naoma’s senior year of high school she met a handsome young man at church, Dale Rex Shumway. He was attending Arizona State College. They dated that year. When Dale left to serve in the Western Canadian Mission, Naoma wrote and waited for him the two years he was away. She knew He was the one for her. Just two days after returning home from his mission, Dale asked Naoma to marry him. On April 10, 1952, just five weeks after Dale’s return, they were married in the Mesa Arizona Temple. Dale and Naoma were blessed with five children Debra Ann (Fred) Woods, Dale Rex (Diane) Shumway, II, Carolyn Ama (Barry) Dickerson, Catherine (Don) Ralph, Matthew Fuller (Julie) Shumway. She is survived by her husband of 71 years, their five children, 22 grandchildren, 61 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren who adore their grandmother. All have been blessed, encouraged, and influenced by her love and support. Each one of them will tell you that they are her favorite.

Naoma was a devoted disciple of Jesus Christ and was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all her life. She served with the young women and as a counselor in the Relief Society. Dale and Naoma served together as Mission President of the New York Rochester Mission 1984-1987. She loved and assisted the missionaries. She hosted many dinners for missionaries and General Authorities including President Ezra Taft Benson and President Gordon B. Hinkley of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Naoma served as a temple ordinance worker in the Mesa Arizona Temple.  Later she was called with her husband to serve as Directors of Mesa Arizona Temple Visitor’s Center.

Naoma radiated the love of God in every interaction. She had a deep and abiding testimony of our Savior Jesus Christ and of His Gospel. We will miss her deeply, but by her example and through her large posterity, she will be remembered always.

The family expresses special thanks to Amelia and Pepe Uhatafe, Olita Talanoa, and Hospice of the Valley for their loving and compassionate care of Naoma the past year.

Arrangements are being handled by Bunker Family Funerals. A viewing will be held at the Bunker Family Garden Chapel, 33 N Centennial Way, Mesa on Sunday, November 12, 2023, from 6:00-8:00 pm. Funeral services will be held in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, at the Tempe Stake Center, located at 2707 S. College Ave., Tempe, Arizona on Monday, November 13, 2023, at 10:00 am with visitation beforehand at 9:00 am in the Relief Society Room. The funeral service will be streamed at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwCyZI4AR_FnaOIEALj9Gvw. The dedication and interment will be at the City of Mesa Cemetery, 1212 N. Center St., Mesa, Arizona immediately following the services.

Veronica Marie Peters of Phoenix, Arizona passed away October 24, 2023 at the age of 75 in Scottsdale, AZ. Veronica was born in Wisconsin. Bunker’s Garden Chapel (480-964-8686) will be handling arrangements.
