Chester Lee Smith, 70, of Mesa, passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2010. He was born July 19, 1939, to Marion and Harriet Griggeory Smith in Waynesville, MO. After joining the Navy in 1957, and having visited family in Arizona, he persuaded his mother, brother and sister to move to Mesa. Chester worked in the telecommunication field and retired from AT&T in 1999. He spent over 30 yrs as a volunteer and President of the Mesa Girl’s Softball League. He served on the Mesa Parks Board and was named the 1993 recipient of the Award of Excellence by the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association at the group’s 43rd annual conference. Chester is survived by his wife of over 49 years Diana (Young); three children Shelley Reid (Eric), Mark Smith (Lisa), and Connie Chastain (Kevin); nine grandchildren; sister Harriet and brother George. Visitation will be held Monday, February 1, 6:00-8:00 pm with the funeral Tuesday February 2, at 10:00 am at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 N. Centennial Way, Mesa, AZ 85201.

John Wesley Watson 72, passed away January 23, 2010 in Casa Grande, AZ. He was born in Phoenix, AZ on 1-1-1938. He loved his work of 35 years for the Mesa Public Schools as a teacher & student counselor. He also spent his life serving others through his church callings. He was preceded in death by his father Wes Watson. He is survived by and will be greatly missed by his wife of 47 years, Janelle, three sons, Reed (Becky), Kevin (Jane) Paul (Becky) & 11 wonderful grandchildren. Also, his mother Vera Watson, two sisters Sandra Cooper, Sue Williams, and one brother Tom Watson. Visitation will be held Wed. Jan. 27, 2010 from 6-8 PM at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 N. Centennial Way, Mesa. Services will be Thu. Jan. 28th at10:00 am, preceded by a visitation at 9:00 AM at the LDS church building, 787 E. Kortsen, Casa Grande, AZ.

Vernon Paul Curnow, a retired Army veteran of World War ll, peacefully passed away on January 26, 2010, after a lengthy illness. He was born July 6, 1914 in Central City, Colorado, and was the oldest of five children. He graduated from East High School in Denver. He entered World War ll in 1944 and retired as a LT. Colonel after 20 years of service. Vernon was an accomplished diver, trampolinist, and skater. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in several church callings. He spent most of his spare time working on cars. He lived most of his life in Colorado, but in 1988 he moved to Mesa, Arizona where he spent the last 22 years. Proceeded in death by Joseph Curnow (father), Mabel French (mother), Raymond Curnow (brother), Paulene Juhnke (sister), and Robert Curnow (brother). He is survived by Eileen Curnow, his sweet wife of 62 years, and his three children Richard (Joyce) Curnow, Verleen McDougal, and Stanley (Amy) Curnow. He leaves behind 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, Alberta Pierce (sister), and several nieces and nephews. His family was so blessed to have such a sweet, kind, and caring husband, father, and grandfather. In his honor a visitation will take place at Bunkers University Chapel, 3529 E. University Dr., Mesa. Monday, February 1, 2010 from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm. Interment will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.

Kenneth Jon Hardy, 72 passed away on January 25, 2010, in Scottsdale, Arizona. He is survived by his sweetheart of 53 years Myrna Rudd Hardy and children Brian (Lauri), Brad (Michelle), Brenda Hardy, Becky (Dwyte) Kelly and Belinda (Brad) Wood and 14 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Norma Hardy and brother Phil Hardy. Kenneth moved to Phoenix in 1984 from Gresham, Oregon. He served his country in both the National Guard and Air Force from 1955 to 1962. His profession was a Real Estate Broker for most of his life. He was a life time member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and also sang with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Visitation is Sunday, January 31, 2010 from 6-8p.m. at Bunker’s University Chapel, 3529 E. University Drive, Mesa. Funeral services will be held Monday, February 1st, at 11:00a.m. at the LDS Des Moines Building, located at 2835 E. Des Moines in Mesa, with visitation 1 hr. prior. He will be buried at a private service at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, Phoenix.

Lisa Marlene Nielsen, born in Chandler, AZ on October 21, 1963, passed away January 23, 2010 after a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her father Tom W. Collins, maternal grandparents Rulon and Gertie Judd, and paternal grandmother Edna Collins. Wallace Wilson Morris, 81 born in Moncks Corner, SC., passed away on January 22nd, 2010. Dale L. Budelier, 81 of Mesa, AZ, died Thursday, January 21, 2010, in Mesa. Dale was born January 29, 1928, the son of Herman and Marjorie Budelier in Rock Island, IL. He married Beverly Lundburg in 1950. He served in the United States Army, and then was employed as Office Manager, Customer Service Division of Iowa, Illinois Gas and Electric, retiring after 33 years of service. After raising his family and retiring he moved to Mesa in 1990, where he enjoyed golfing, dancing and the community of many good friends. He is survived by sons, Dan, (Diane), Mark, Chris and one grandson, Mason. He is preceded in death by his parents and one son David. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, January 29, 2010 at 11:00a.m., at Bunker’s University Chapel, 3529 E. University Dr., Mesa. Inurnment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island, IL. Charles William Adair, age 82, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on January 20, 2010. He was born August 2, 1927 in Ramah, New Mexico to Alfred and Helena Adair, one of six children. In 1945, upon graduation from Mesa High School, Charles joined the Navy and was soon discharged due to the end of World War II. He 1949 he married his wife of 60 years, Jeannine Slade, in the Salt Lake City temple. During those 60 years Charles worked at the Mesa Post Office, retiring after 40 years. He played both fast and slow pitch softball. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings. He is preceded in death by his brothers Al, Milton, Norman, and Leonard Adair and sister LaPrill Taylor. He is survived by his loving and faithful wife Jeannine Adair, five sons Charles Kay (Teresa), Kerry (Dixie), Kendall (Elaine), Karl (Shannon), and David (Stephanie) Adair, 23 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. There will be a visitation on Friday, January 22, 2010 from 6-8 PM at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 N. Centennial Way in Mesa. Funeral services will be Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 2:00 PM preceded by a visitation from 1:00- 1:40 PM at the LDS Church at 1050 S. Hobson in Mesa. Our family would like to give loving thanks to Hospice of the Valley for the tender care they gave our husband, dad, and grandfather in his final days.

Jack C. Fletcher, 74, of Mesa, Arizona died Monday, January 18, 2010. He was born October 26, 1935 in Chandler, Arizona, the 3rd of four children born to Cecil Clifton and Vera Mae Stapley-Fletcher. Jack was a graduate of Mesa High School and Arizona State University. He served in the US Navy on the Destroyer USS Hanson. Jack worked from 1962 to 2004 in the title and trust field, primarily as a plant manager. He is survived by his two children Chris and Carrie Fletcher, a brother Darrell and granddaughter Cassidy. Funeral services will be Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 12:00 PM preceded by a visitation at 11:00 AM at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 N. Centennial Way in Mesa. Dorothy Bernice Stenke of Scottsdale, AZ (formerly of Northlake and Country Club Hills, IL) passed away to be with our Lord on Saturday, January 9, 2010, at Scottsdale Healthcare Hospital surrounded by her family. Dorothy was born on September 12, 1919 in Chicago, IL to Walter and Mabel Denhoff. She graduated from East Leyden High School in Franklin Park, IL in 1937. On August 31, 1940 she married Wilbert Charles Stenke in River Grove, IL. Beloved and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Dorothy’s center in life was her family. Always gracious, giving and caring for others, Dorothy’s home was always a welcome haven. In addition to her parents and her brother Wallace Denhoff, Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 44 years. She is survived by her brother, Wilbert (Joan) Denhoff, sister-in-law, Ann Denhoff; her children, Shirley (Larry) Berger, Linda Wisniewski, Catherine Borem, Marsha (Gary) Bretz, Deborah Stenke, Janice Finan, Patricia Cote, David (Mishelle) Stenke and Kenneth Stenke; 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren. 65 of Tempe AZ (formerly Phoenix) died January 5, 2010. Born Sacramento, California. Grew up in Nevada. Survived by husband John of 44 years, married children Alicia (Hoag), Bryce, Seth, Budd, Lucinda (Foster), and 17 grandchildren. Taught at Maryvale, Creighton, Osborn, Sunnyside and University of Arizona. Obtained BA from BYU and MA from U of A. Favorite interests were family, church service, Spanish, music and learning about anything she did not know. Served LDS missions with husband as mission president in Monterrey, Mexico and Malaga, Spain. Viewing starts 9:00 AM with funeral services at 10:00 on Friday, January 15, in LDS church at 1881 E. Del Rio Drive, Tempe AZ. Evening viewing is Thursday the 14th, 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 North Centennial Way, Mesa. Frank Joseph Woolsey passed away on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010 in Mesa, AZ. He was born on Sept. 21, 1915 to Lars Walter and Dora Lee Woolsey in Algodon, AZ. He is survived by his eternal companion Virgie Angle Woolsey and his children Elton Woolsey (LaVerne), Frankie Maxwell (Larry) and Robert Woolsey (Susan), 14 grandchildren and 63 great-grandchildren, brothers Norman Grant Woolsey, Phillip Woolsey and Larry Woolsey. He was an awesome husband and father; we will miss him very much. Funeral services will be Friday, Jan. 8, 2010 at 10:00 AM with visitation at 8:30 AM at the Gilbert Highland Stake Center, 3580 E. House, Alberta Mathilda, age 89, was born in Aurora, IN on Dec, 7, 1920. She passed away peacefully on Jan. 5, in Gilbert, AZ. She is preceded in death by her husband Elmer Leroy House, infant son Elmer Leroy House Jr. and sisters Hazel Morling and Mildred Whitham. (John) Fleming, John (Karen) House and 5 grandchildren: Jacqueline House, Carolyn and Rebecca Fleming, and John and Carly House. Alberta moved to Arizona in 1968 and worked for the Apache Jct. Unified School District both as a volunteer and employee. She fell in love with Arizona and its outdoor activities. Visitation will be held at Bunker’s University Chapel, 3529 E. University Dr., Mesa on Mon., Jan 11, 5-8 pm.

James Edward Livingston 1951-2009

We announce the death of our beloved cousin, a favorite family member, and friend, James Livingston. James Edward Livingston, age 58, died on December 25, 2009. James was a resident of Gilbert, Arizona for fifty years. James was born in Phoenix, Arizona. His parents Bill and Iva Lane raised him as their foster son until Iva’s passing at age 97 in 1998. James is remembered by his family and friends for his kind heart, gentle spirit, intelligence, responsibility, reliability, perseverance, and loyalty. Examples of James’ character: when his mom was placed in a nursing home at age 92, James walked 5 hours each way, a total of 10 hours every Tuesday and every Friday to spend the day with her. He left his home in Gilbert at 3 a.m. and was at the nursing home, in Mesa by 8 a.m. to have breakfast with her. He spent the day there, had dinner with her at 5 p.m., and then walked home, arriving at home at 10 p.m. On Sundays, his Pastor Hugh Middleton picked James up at his home in Gilbert then drove over to pick Jim’s mom up at the nursing home so they could worship at Baseline Bible Church. Pastor Middleton, aided by Jim and his Mom and other church members built Baseline Bible Church from an old dairy to the beautiful place of worship it is today. After his mothers’ death, Jim continued to visit residents of the nursing home who were alone in this world. He preferred walking to get there as he did not like public transportation. Throughout his adult life Jim was seen walking the streets in Gilbert, helping people in need by shopping for them, visiting them and feeding them and their cats. James cleaned his church as a volunteer for many years. He also did gardening for a living for a number of years. James suffered a heart attack on June 2, 2009 followed by a stroke with complications a few weeks later. He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him. The family wishes to thank the people in Jim’s life who helped him on his medical journey. They include: his dentist Dr. DiMaggio, and staff at Dr. DiMaggio’s office. Also, his doctors at Banner Heart Hospital, Dr. Armita Gupta, Dr. Donald Polansky, Dr. James DelGiorno, Dr. George Walker, Dr. Jaime Ibarrola, Dr. Rodrigo Chan, and the wonderful nurses and staff at Banner. We also thank the staff at Springdale West Rehab Center and the staff at Springdale West Nursing home for their care and concern for James. Hospice of the Valley provided comfort care to James during the last days of his life and we express our appreciation to them. We also thank Dr. John Carmola and Dr. Sharon Stafford for their support. James is survived by his loving cousins Don and Marie Clement of California who felt he was more like a brother than a cousin. Also, cousins Tim, Linda, Brian, Zachary, and Christopher Clement of Modesto, California. And cousins Chris, Teri and Kennedy Clement of Kyle, Texas.
