Joseph Aaron Sorenson of Mesa, Arizona, passed away at the age of 78 October 30, 2011. Joe is survived by his three sons and three daughters, 15 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and 3 sisters. Joe was a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints his entire life. A viewing will be held Wednesday, November 2 at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 N. Centennial Way in Mesa from 6- 8 PM. Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 3 at the Mesa North Stake, 933 E. Brown Road. Viewing at 9 AM and services beginning at 10. Interment will be at the Mesa Cemetery.

Grace Cain, 100, of Apache Jct, AZ passed away Oct 28, 2011 of natural causes. Grace’s door was always open to family and friends. She was a fabulous cook who would feed you, whether you were hungry or not. She rightfully took pride in her welcoming home and colorful gardens. Most of all she loved caring for babies. Grace was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years Ralph Cain, as well as 5 brothers and 2 sisters. She is survived by her only child Patsy Wurzburger, granddaughter Toby Brown (Gale), great-grandson Benjamin Cain Brown (Mary), great-great-granddaughter Bella Brown, and brothers Lloyd Faught of IL and Clifford Faught of Mesa. A graveside service will be held at 11:00a.m., Thursday Nov 3 at Mountain View Memorial Gardens, 7900 E. Main St., Mesa, AZ. Arrangements entrusted to Bunkers University Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley or a charity of your choice. Grace was deeply loved by her family and we will greatly miss her. She is now in the arms of her Lord and reunited with those who passed before her.

James E. Maldonado. Born October 17, 1953 in Phoenix, AZ and passed on October 29, 2011. He was preceded in death by his parents Tony and LaRue. Survived by his wife Corinne, 5 children, Brent (Terina), Brian, Carrie Skiba (Burt), Heather, Erica Hansen (Tim) and 7 grandchildren. He was a man of many talents. He worked as a plan check engineer for the City of Tempe. He served on the board of directors and was the past president of IAEI. He enjoyed spending time with family and serving others. Services are Saturday November 5th at 10 AM at the LDS Church 3440 S. Signal Butte Mesa, AZ with a viewing one hour before. Also visitation and viewing on Friday November 4th from 6-8 at Bunker’s Funeral Home at 3529 E University Dr. Mesa, Az.

Anna Mae Klaassen
1924/09/28 - 2011/10/30

Anna Mae Hinrick was born on September 28, 1924, on the family farm near Little Rock, Iowa, to Ferd and Maggie (Block) Hinricks.

Anna Mae grew up helping on the farm and graduated from County School and from Little Rock High School in 1941. She worked in a cafe and worked at Sibley Creamery for four years. She then moved to Pella, Iowa and attended Central College. She graduated with a degree in Sociology.

She moved to Des Moines, Iowa and worked for Blue Cross and Blue Shield. She was faithful to her work and worked in the Claims Department for 35 years and then retired.

On July 9, 1944, Anna Mae confessed the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior and joined the Salem Reformed Church of Little Rock, Iowa.

When she moved to Des Moines, Iowa, Anna Mae became a member of Bethany Reformed Church. She was Sunday School Superintendent and also taught in Sunday School.

Not too long after moving to Des Moines, Anna Mae met a hometown boy. She married Harold D. Klaassen on October 2, 1953, in the Salem Reformed Church of Little Rock, Iowa. They returned to Des Moines, Iowa, to live. Later, Anna Mae transferred their membership to the Meredith Drive Reformed Church.

Anna Mae enjoyed reading and sewing. She enjoyed reading the Bible and belonged to the Ladies Study Group. They studied the Bible.

After retiring, Anna Mae and Harold did quite a bit of traveling with their trailer visiting many states and friends and attending Camp Meetings. They moved to Arizona and joined the Desert Haven Community Church where they are members at this time.

Anna Mae was preceded in death by one sister, Jennie LaVonne Drenth and her parents, Ferd and Maggie Hinricks. She is survived by her husband, Harold D. Klaassen and two brothers, Willis Fred Hiricks of Ankeny, Iowa and Bruce Henry Hinricks of Denten, Texas. Plus a large number of nieces and nephews.

James Orland Brookbank, 92, of Show Low, AZ, born August 14, 1919 in Phoenix Arizona, passed away October 14, 2011 in Mesa, AZ. Jim was a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where he held many positions and later served a mission in the Dallas, Texas Temple with his late wife, Juanita (Skeets). A World War II Veteran, Jim served in the U.S. Navy where he was an aviation radar technician. Dad, Grandpa, was loved and will be missed by children; Betty Stephens (Ray), Polly Cluff (Ron), Jim Brookbank (Jo), Alice Harris (Bob, deceased), Allen Dill (Paulette), and 23 Grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services are Saturday Oct. 22, 2011 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 933 E. Brown Road, Mesa, AZ. Visitation at 10 AM with services following at 11 AM. Early in the morning on October 10, 2011, Robin Schaffner went to see her Heavenly Father. After a long battle with MD, Robin is now safely walking the streets of heaven with her son Joshua, who went be with the Lord in 2010. There were many things Robin enjoyed; movies, nice dinners, shopping spending time with her sister, and being a mom. Robin lived life by her rules and didn’t budge on what she believed to be true and right. Robin will be greatly missed. She was loved by friends and beloved by family. Sleep well Robin, for the Lord shall take you in His arms and keep you safe. Robin is predeceased by her son Joshua, mother Mable Maracle, and brother Lyle Maracle. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Schaffner, sisters Connie, Thelma and Carol and her brother Robert, many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Saturday, October 29, 2011, at 12:00, at Mesa First Church of the Nazarene, 955 E. University Dr in Mesa, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Contributions may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association or Mesa First Church of the Nazarene in Mesa. Arrangements by Bunker’s Garden Chapel.

Jim (James Joseph) Giroux, age 41, of Mesa, died on October 11, 2011 from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). He was born July 17, 1970 to Maurice L. and M. Jean (Forcier) Giroux in Manchester, New Hampshire. He attended Calvary Christian High School where he played varsity basketball. Jim went on to graduate from Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee in 1992 with a B.A. in Psychology. Upon graduating from college, Jim worked as a Christian Youth Pastor in New Hampshire. After moving to Arizona in 1994, Jim worked throughout the valley as a Licensed Independent Substance Abuse Counselor and administrator in the mental health industry. Jim is survived by his wife of eleven years Elizabeth (Lester) Giroux and sons James Adam and Shane Richard. He is also survived by his parents, his brothers Marc and Ken Giroux and sister Linda Provencal. A viewing will be held Friday October 14 from 6 – 8 PM at Bunker Family Funeral Home at 3529 East University Dr, Mesa, AZ 85213. Funeral services will be held at the same location on Saturday October 15 at 11 AM. His final resting place will be at Mountain View Memorial Gardens at 7900 East Main St, Mesa, AZ 85207.

Michael Craig Cooper

Cooper, Michael, 47, of Queen Creek, left this earth on Oct. 6, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Benson, Arizona, Mike grew up relishing history, patriotism and the outdoors. He spent his youth in San Manuel & graduated from Casa Grande Union High with honors & played varsity basketball. After serving a mission for the LDS church in Honduras, Mike graduated from BYU and Thunderbird with an MBA in International Management. An Administrative Manager for Univar for 20 years, Mike enjoyed many friendships at work as well as in his community in Glendale and Queen Creek where he raised his family. Mike touched many lives with his humility and kindness. He is preceded in death by his father, James Cooper and two brothers Darren and Sean Cooper. He is survived by his wife Rosie Cooper (Brown), his 5 children Alexis (20), Victoria (17), Christian (14), Nick (10) & Natalie (8), his mother Marilyn Cooper/Lunt, step-father Roger Lunt, sister Candy Galbraith (Manti), two nephews and a niece. His legacy was a love of family and devotion to God. He was a valiant man. A viewing will be held on Monday, Oct. 10th from 7-9 P.M. at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 North Centennial Way, Mesa, AZ. The funeral services will be on Tuesday, Oct. 11th at 11:00 A.M. at the LDS church on 19413 S. Sossaman, Queen Creek, AZ. He will be buried at Valley of the Sun Cemetery in Chandler. Davies, Anna (Thomason), 41, of Mesa, AZ, passed away on September 29, 2011 surrounded by family after a decade-long battle against liposarcoma (terminal cancer). Anna earned a B.A. in Early Childhood Education from Brigham Young University, served a faithful mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Nauvoo, IL and taught pre-kindergarten in Texas. She and her family lived in Washington and Texas before settling in Mesa, AZ. Anna battled her cancer with an unquenchable positive attitude and fighting spirit, even when she lost her leg to it. She had a beautiful voice, infectious smile, fantastic sense of humor and deep testimony of her Savior, Jesus Christ. She served and touched the lives of countless people who deem her beautiful, kind, loving, brave, strong, hard-working and a true inspiration and example. Anna is survived by her husband, Rick, son Caleb (13), daughter Emma (10), mother Carolyn Thomason of Mesa, AZ, father Gerald Thomason of Kaysville, UT, her brothers and sisters, Jon Thomason of San Diego, CA, Deborah White of Spokane Valley, WA, Angela Nickerl of Carlsbad, CA, Rebecca Jensen of Spokane Valley, WA, Barry Thomason of Chewelah, WA, Spencer Thomason of Mesa, AZ, Sarah Knopp of Mesa, AZ, Brady Thomason of San Tan Valley, AZ, and Amanda Todd of Bossier City, LA, their spouses, and 61 nieces and nephews. Services are Saturday, October 8 at the LDS Chapel located at 6655 E. Preston Rd, Mesa, AZ 85215 as follows: public viewing at 10 am, funeral services at 11 am. An educational trust fund has been set up for Anna’s children, Caleb and Emma. Contributions can be mailed to Megan Thomason, 5278 Meadows Del Mar, San Diego, CA 92130. Vercy Virginia Miles

Miles, Vercy V. Wilkins, beloved mother and grandmother, age 92, passed away Thursday, September 29, 2011. She was born June 26, 1919 in the farming community of Franklin, Arizona. She was an excellent student with a particular interest in speech, band, and dance. Vercy was widely recognized for giving humorous readings. She later worked as a librarian, post office clerk, and teacher. During World War II she moved to Los Angeles to work at a military supply depot. There she met Lynwood Miles whom she married in 1945. In 1950 they moved to Mesa where they raised four children. Together they were devoted to their family – the heart and center of their lives, creating a wonderful atmosphere in which their children could learn and grow. Vercy’s dedication to her family was demonstrated throughout her life as she worked diligently to care for, serve, and guide her children. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were precious blessings. Vercy celebrated special occasions by drawing the family close and providing memorable gatherings where all could enjoy delicious meals, a lovely atmosphere and family fun. She was very organized, a hard worker, frugal, modest, a wonderful cook and seamstress. Through her sacrifice and service she has given dearly to her family and will be eternally remembered for her love and devotion to her family and God. She is preceded in death by her loving husband Lynwood, son Brian, daughter-in-law Shaunna and grandson Curtis. She is survived by her children Lynn (Lynette), Linda (Dee) Burrell, and Robert, daughter-in-law Rae, 30 grandchildren, and 63 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Monday, October 3, 2011 at 10 AM, at the Harris 2nd Ward Chapel, 1455 N Harris Dr., Mesa with visitation from 9:00-9:40 AM. Arrangements by Bunker’s Garden Chapel.
