Joan E. Romney Udall
Our angel mother passed away Sunday, January 27, 2013. Joan Estelle LeDosquet was born on Jan. 23, 1925 in Williston, ND. After graduating from high school, Joan moved to Utah with her parents in 1943. She met Wayne Lafay Romney while applying for a job and it was love at first sight. They were engaged in December and married the following June. They had 3 children in Utah; moved to Phoenix in 1952 and had 3 more children. Joan was a wonderful mother and served in various volunteer capacities in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Joan took special care of Wayne when his health declined and he died in 1986. She was a widow for 14 years and surprised her children when she announced that she would marry Nicholas John Udall in February of 2000. They had 5 great years together until Nick’s passing in 2005. Sadly, Joan was also preceded in death by her son, Joseph Scott Romney in 2008. Joan’s family includes 6 children, Richard Wayne Romney (Kathleen Adair), Robert Alden Romney (Debra Larson), Diane Romney Vella (Joseph Vella), Joseph Scott Romney (Nicala Wanic), William Orin Romney (Stephanie Davis) and John LeDosquet Romney (Connie Singleton), 35 grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 at 11 AM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Lakeside Ward, 1005 N. Voyager Dr., Gilbert, AZ. Visitation will be Friday from 6-8 PM at the Lakeside Ward building and also Saturday at 10 AM. Burial will be at Green Acres Cemetery Monday, February 4th. Arrangements by Bunker’s University Chapel
Donald Dean Pettera, 82, passed away January 28, 2013 in Mesa, AZ. Memorial services are Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at 2 PM at the East Valley Intergroup Alcoholic Anonymous, 5640 East Main Street, Mesa, AZ. Arrangements by Bunker’s Garden Chapel.
Reah Wardle Sanders, 92, peacefully passed away January 22, 2013, after a very full and active life of love and service. She was born May 18, 1920 in St. Anthony, ID to Charles Myers and Harriet Rhodehouse Wardle and was next to the youngest of 15 children. She married Orville Thomas Sanders (Tom, O.T.) on June 18, 1938 in Caldwell, ID. They were sealed in the LDS Logan Utah Temple June 18, 1940. They had five children, Thomas Charles (Kathy), Walter Richard (Judy), Harry James, Jerry Michael (Charlotte), and Nancy Carol (Mark Pullman). Tom and sons Thomas Charles, Harry, and Jerry preceded her in death. Reah was an active member of the LDS Church, serving as a teacher of children and youth and in Relief Society. Tom served as a US Marine in the South Pacific during WWII, leaving Reah at home with three little boys. After the war they moved to Caldwell, ID to raise their family. She also helped in their appliance store and was an excellent cook, gardener, painter and seamstress. In their retirement years, they moved to Mesa, AZ where they made many dear friends. They loved to dance, travel and served in the Boise and Mesa LDS Temples. Reah is survived by son Walter Richard and daughter Nancy Carol, 19 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. The celebration of her life and her funeral will take place Friday, February 1, 2013, at 11 AM, preceded by a visitation at 10 AM at the LDS chapel at 2265 S. Hawes Rd. in east Mesa. We are thankful for those who cared for Reah during her last years with such kindness, especially her daughter-in-law, Kathy Moody Sanders, many people of the LDS Hawes Ward, Hospice and Arbor Rose, in east Mesa. Lela Faye Morrison, affectionately known as Bunky, went to be with her loved ones in Heaven on January 24, 2013. She was born to James and Florence Carlton on June 19, 1932, in Gillette, WY. She kept a piece of Wyoming in her heart, even as she added Arizona to her list of favorites. Bunky moved from Wyoming to Arizona in the early 50s to marry the love of her life, Kenny. Soon after, they started their family and worked hard on their farm and ranch together throughout their lifetime. Bunky is survived by her daughter, Dawnie and her husband Justin Stewart, and sons, Glen, and Dale. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law Don and Arlene Carlton. She will be dearly missed by her five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. When Bunky became a great-grandmother, she became known as GG, short for “Great Grandmother” and everyone that knew her, agrees that she was truly great. She loved her kids, grand kids and great-grand kids. Her favorite past time was spending time with each and every one of them and telling them how much they were loved. Bunky spent many hours walking her beloved dogs along the field roads around their home in Higley, Arizona, enjoying the peacefulness and beauty of the farm. She also loved being up on the family Ranch in Northern Arizona. She looked forward to the hard work of Roundup. She spent long days preparing food for the cowboys as they came in from gathering, branding and working the cattle. Bunky loved being with people. Her husband always said, “She was the first to get somewhere and the last to leave.
Charles Lawrence (Larry) Zufelt, 91, passed away peacefully January 21, 2013 at his home in Mesa. He was born on April 18, 1921 in Jewett, New Mexico to Charles and Dolly May DeLuche Zufelt. Larry served a mission in South Carolina for the LDS Church. Following his mission, he served two years in the U.S. Navy, was honorably discharged in 1946 and started his own concrete block plant in Durango, Colorado. He married Anna Jacqueline (Jacque) Waddell on April 2, 1948 in the Mesa, Arizona LDS Temple, and settled in Gallup, New Mexico, and operated his own block company. Larry and his family moved to Mesa, Arizona, and he took a job as a salesman for Superlite Block during the day, and worked nights and weekends to establish his own masonry business and invested in real estate and rental properties. Larry loved being busy and always had another project to work on. Larry lived a life of service to his family and church, and together with Jacque, his wife of 65 years, served a Church mission in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and in the Arizona Temple for 30+ years. He loved his Savior and had a passion for teaching the Gospel at every opportunity, and his testimony and example will be remembered by all who knew him. Larry was one of the most generous, selfless, patient and forgiving people, and had a way about him that made others want to be like him. His grandchildren were the light of his life and he always looked forward to family gatherings when he could be around them. He is survived by his wife, Anna Jacqueline (Jacque) Zufelt; children: Larry W. Zufelt, Pamela (Mark) Rowley, Cheryl (Martin) Howey, Debbie Clark-Zufelt, 28 grandchildren, 64 great-grandchildren and sister Stella Sawyer. He was preceded in death by his parents and 12 brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 28th at 11:00 AM at the LDS Mountain Vista Ward, 10305 E. Southern in Mesa, Arizona, with a viewing at 10:00 AM that same morning. There will also be a viewing on Sunday, January 27th from 6 to 8 PM at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 North Centennial Way in Mesa. Interment will be at Mountain View Memorial Gardens, 7900 E. Main St. in Mesa, AZ.
Ronald Norman Frost, 78, passed away on January 17, 2013 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Ron was born in Boise, Idaho on November 25, 1934 to Norman and Lucille Frost. He married Catherine (Katie) Louise Lund in the Salt Lake Temple and they are the parents of six children. Following Katie’s death in 2005, Ron married Carol Barratt Mortensen. Ron is a graduate of Brigham Young University and Georgetown University Dental School. He had two successful dental practices, the first in Arlington, Virginia and the second in Mesa, Arizona. Ron gave a lifetime of service to his community and as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At the age of 21, he served a full-time LDS mission in Switzerland, where he gained a love of the German language and culture. As a senior missionary he served with Katie in Chile, Florida and Switzerland and twice with Carol in Germany. He is survived by his wife Carol and his six children, Stacey Owens (Mark) of St. George, Utah, Anne Martin (David), Bill Frost (Kelly), Stuart Frost (Christina), Steven Frost (Rhonda) and Christine Hamberlin (Jim) all of Mesa, Arizona. He had 25 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He is survived by his brothers, Richard and Terry Frost and his sister Marilyn Crandall, all of Utah. Ron loved traveling, photography and playing the piano. He was generous in his desire to help others and is dearly loved. He touched the lives of many all over the world and will be deeply missed. Visitation will be held Friday, January 25, 2013 from 6-8 pm at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 N. Centennial Way, Mesa, AZ. Funeral Services will be Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 10:00 am at the North Stake Center, 933 E. Brown Road, Mesa, AZ with visitation one hour prior.
Angela Antone, 19, passed away January 15, 2013 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Wake services are Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at 6 PM at Salt River Memorial Hall, 9849 E. Earll Drive in Scottsdale. Funeral services are Thursday, January 24, 2013 at sunrise, also at Salt River Memorial Hall. Interment will follow at the Salt River Cemetery.
Lillis Maurine Reeder Cluff, 95, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 18, 2013, in Queen Creek, AZ, where she had resided for 71 years. Maurine was born in Brigham City, Utah, on April 27, 1917, to Daniel Seth and Lillias Eva Hadley Reeder. Our lovely mother was educated in Utah, graduating from the University of Utah with a major in Spanish and minor in French. Prior to her marriage to Ivan LeRoy Cluff of Chandler, AZ, she taught school in Ogden, Utah, and when married they moved to Arizona. Ivan farmed the Queen Creek area for many years and Maurine taught school in Queen Creek. She had the wonderful opportunity to teach young people, their children, and then their grandchildren English, Spanish and Home Economics skills. She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, having served in the Spanish American Mission and numerous church callings, including the 10th Relief Society President of the Chandler Ward. She was admired and was a stalwart in the community with her knowledge of the history of Queen Creek. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ivan Cluff, and more recently by her brother Darrell Reeder and grandson, Eric Kimball Lines. Survivors include her sons Gerald (Joan), Kenneth (Sharon), Leon (Angie), and daughter Marjean (Ted) Lines. Her posterity includes many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Maurine will be held on Saturday, January 26th, at 10:30am in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel located at 19413 S. Sossaman Rd., Queen Creek, AZ. Prior to the services a viewing will be held from 9am to 10:15am. Interment will be at the City of Mesa Cemetery, 1212 N. Center Street, Mesa, AZ. Patrick Lewis Stanley, 60, passed away Jan. 18, 2013 in Tempe, AZ. He was born Dec. 4, 1952 in Waukegan, IL. Patrick worked 38 years as a barber and the past 11 years he was self-employed as the owner of Azstoneworx with his wife Lorna. Patrick loved to spend time with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father Alvin Waldemar Stanley. He is survived by his wife Lorna, son Jeffrey Allan (Cynthia) Stanley, grandson Natel, mother Lorraine (Roy) Bentley, brothers Gary (Linda) and Rick Stanley and two nephews. Visitation is Tues., January 22, 2013 from 6:30-8:30pm, with rosary at 7pm, at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 N. Centennial Way, Mesa. Mass is Wed., January 23, 2012 at noon at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 1800 E. Libra Drive, Tempe, AZ. Burial at the Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Mesa AZ, followed by a reception at the Church of the Holy Spirit, Tempe, AZ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America.
Terry Wayne Cope passed away January 15, 2013 at his home in Mesa, Arizona. He was born in Rapid City, SD on July 17, 1948 to Vernon and Ila June (Small) Cope. He fought his fight with cancer his way – naturally – and touched many lives with his different approach. He did it his way, with dignity and courage. He was blessed with a year of accomplishments, blessings, memories and one in which he touched many lives.
He attended school in Rapid City. He served honorably in the U S Navy Submarine Service from 1968 until 1974.
On December 7, 1968 he married Claudia Tschetter in Rapid City. They loved and enjoyed their 7 children and the time they spent at home or traveling with them. Family and home were the heart of Terry’s world. Every day with Terry was a delight when he found a way to make you laugh or smile and made you feel like you were the most important person in his world.
He loved being with his family, teaching them the gospel and inspiring their dreams. He loved wood working, which inspired his life-long occupations, building homes and the construction business. Terry sold and erected steel buildings – he has one in every state in the continent. He passed on the love of building to his sons.
Terry’s perspective on life and problem solving was a gift that he was able to use throughout his life. He always thought “outside the box
Gus Kambouris passed away peacefully early Sunday morning January 13, 2013, with his daughter by his side. He was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, August 4, 1924 to Efstratios Kambouris and Mary K DeVine. He married Jean Tillman on April 1, 1950 in Las Vegas, NV. Gus was an extremely accomplished man having served as a tail gunner in the Army Air Corps in the European Theater during WWII. He worked for the Department of Defense for Twenty-nine years. During this time he served two tours overseas including Trois Fontaines Ammunition Depot in France and Camp Zama Japan. The rest of his Civil Service was spent at Navajo Army Depot in Flagstaff and at Fort Huachuca. After “retiring
Michael Thomas Richards, age 68, born in Anderson, Indiana, on October 15th, 1944, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Mesa, Arizona, on Tuesday, January 15th, 2013. He was a resident of Mesa for 45 years. He was a faithful Latter-Day Saint and served in many capacities within the church. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Beverly Beatty Richards. He is survived by his brother, Tom Richards, his sister, Sharon Richards, and his 6 children: Mike (Kelly), Dave (Janet), Steve (Jolana), Renee (Larry), Gena (Doug) and Meredith (Jon). He had 21 grandchildren and 1 great grandson. A viewing will be held Monday, January 21st, 2013, at the Bunker University Chapel in Mesa, Arizona, from 6-8pm. Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013, at 10am at the LDS Apache Junction Stake Center, 1720 North Ironwood Road. Internment will follow at the City of Mesa Cemetery.
Johnson, Marjorie (Guinn), age 81, formerly of Mesa, Arizona, passed gently from this life to the next on January 16, 2013, in Orem, Utah. Marjorie was born in Phoenix on March 5, 1931, the second child of Roy Guinn and Nell (King) Guinn of Ajo, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Gene, a sister Thelma Watson, a grandson Nathanael, and her beloved husband of 58 years, Frederick G. Johnson, Jr. She is survived by her brothers Gayle (Dianne) of Mesa, and Grant (Kathy) of Phoenix; her six sons McKay (Sue Anne), Lee (Elizabeth), Bryn (Lee Ann), Erin (Ginger), Webb (Vachelle), and Jared (Vicki); 23 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren. As a childhood convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she led her parents and siblings into life-long, active membership in the Church. She devoted her life to the raising of her sons, to the care of other family members, and to service in the Church. Many of her Church callings drew on her magnificent musical gifts as chorister, pianist, and vocalist. She was also a talented artist and author with numerous original paintings and stories to her credit. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 pm, Thursday, January 24, at Bunker’s Garden Chapel 33 N. Margaret D Klein, passed away January 8, 2013 in Mesa, Arizona. She was born August 17, 1929 in Langhorn, Pennsylvania. She is survived by her son Richard J. Walden (Cathy), sister Patricia Huppert and grandchildren Jennifer Walden, Heather Bauer (Walden) and Jeffrey Walden, all of Colorado Springs. Arrangements by Bunker’s Garden Chapel.
Donna May Benson Thompson Beckstead, 91, passed away peacefully Saturday, January 12, 2013 at her home with her family around her. She was born in Fairview, Franklin, Idaho on March 19, 1921 and lived in Idaho until 1957 when she moved to Mesa, AZ. She lived a life of service to her family and church. She is survived by her five children Julie (Gary) McDowell, Randi Baker, Marie (Grant) Coley, Jerry (Diana) Thompson, Brent (Marlene) Thompson, 19 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. Her favorite activities were bowling, gardening, sewing, and the Phoenix Suns. She was preceded in death by her childhood sweetheart Blaine Thompson and the late Ace Beckstead, her father Morgan Benson, mother Myrtle Benson, two brothers Lee & Seth, grandson Blaine and granddaughters Michelle & Amber. Visitation will be January 18, 2013 from 6 to 8 pm at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 N. Centennial Way in Mesa. There will be a viewing January 19, 2013 at the LDS Chapel at 613 N. Stewart in Mesa from 10 to 10:45am followed by a memorial service at 11. Interment will be at the Mesa Cemetery in Mesa, AZ.
Mary Gwen Holdaway Riding-Searle passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children and husband, in her home on January 13, 2013 in Mesa, AZ. She was born October 7, 1932 in Vineyard, UT. She married Lynn Wright Riding on December 14, 1951 in the Salt Lake Temple. Mary was a wonderful homemaker and mother. She served faithfully in many capacities in the LDS church and LDS temple. Her endless compassion for others endeared her to her family, friends and neighbors. She married Tex Searle on September 18, 2010 in Mesa, AZ. She was preceded in death by her first husband Lynn; her parents Harold Holdaway and Norma Holdaway-Christensen; brothers Michael and Jay Elmer Holdaway; and sisters Deon Hulsey, Carole Iwamura, and Vicki Woods. She is survived by her 8 children: John Lynn (Terry), Rebecca Thacker (Boyd), Amy Jones (Kyle), David Andrew (Andrea), Benjamin Todd (Kelli), Richard Harold, Robert Stephen (Amy) and Mary Jane Riding. She has 44 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Friday, Jan. 18 from 6-8 pm at the Mesa Solomon Ward, 977 E. Broadway Rd. Funeral services will be at 10 am Saturday, Jan.19, at the same location with visitation at 9 am. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Bunker’s Garden Chapel.
