Anna Lee Slivka, 83, passed away peacefully on 27 April 2013. She is survived by her children Scott (Jackie) Slivka, Shawna (Paul) Ellsworth, 11 grandchildren, and a growing number of great-grandchildren. Funeral services are Tuesday, 21 May 2013 at 10 AM at the LDS Sunny Mesa Ward, 4640 E. Holmes in Mesa. This will be preceded by a viewing at 9 AM. Anna Lee will join her husband, George Slivka Jr., in the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. Arrangements by Bunker’s Garden Chapel.
Jose Edwardo (Eddie) Encinas, age 81 of Chandler, AZ, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after losing his battle to cancer. Eddie was born on March 6, 1932 to Manuel and Cecilia Encinas in Chandler, AZ; eldest of 3 children. He graduated from Chandler High School in 1954. Eddie served in the Air Force as a Chaplains Assistant. He traveled the world while in the service but always returned to his hometown of Chandler. He retired after 24 years from Williams AFB in 1978. Eddie was very active in his community as a City Council member for the Chandler Housing & Human Rights Services & Commissions and being a board member for the Chandler Coalition for Civil & Human Rights. The Mayor of Chandler declared March 6th, on Eddie’s 80th birthday, as Eddie Encinas Day for his dedication and commitment to his community. Eddie was a man who truly cared about family and helping those in need. He is preceded in death by his parents Manuel & Cecilia and his granddaughter Amanda Rose. He is survived by his 5 children: Joseph, Crystalina (Tia), Victor (Rebecca), Angel (Tony), Brian (Christine); Brother: Albert; Sister: Clara; 13 Grandchildren and 4 Great Grandchildren. A Viewing will be held 9:00 AM, Friday, May 17th at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 N. Centennial Way in Mesa; Rosary 11:00 with a Funeral Mass at 11:30 AM, Friday, May 17th at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, 230 W. Galveston St., Chandler, AZ. Interment will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Mesa.
Elmer Minch, 83, passed away on May 6, 2013 in his home in Mesa, Arizona. He was born January 6, 1930 in Gering, Nebraska. He moved his family to Arizona in 1964. He loved working on John Deere farm equipment and began a long career with Arizona Machinery Company. Elmer touched the lives of all who met him. He loved to spend time with his family and friends. He was actively involved in golf, reading, playing cards and volunteered his time being our all-around handyman. He is survived by his adored wife Dorothy of 61 years, son Jim (wife Sharon), son Gary (partner Susie), daughter Debbie, eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, sisters Carolyn Nash, Lydia Becking and brother, Eddy. Memorial service will be held at 11AM on Saturday, May 25th at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 North Centennial Way, Mesa, AZ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to St. Mark’s Sprinzl/Murphy Food Pantry or New Leaf/La Mesita.
Eileen Guthrie Black passed away Friday, May 10. She was born March 17, 1924 in Douglas, Arizona to Loren Vaughan Guthrie and Anna Elizabeth Dillman. She graduated from Mesa High School and met her husband, Durward Black, at a dance at the Mezona during WWII. She will be greatly missed by her brother and sister, Glenn Guthrie and Charmaine Halversen, her sister-in-law Ruth Guthrie, her children, Elizabeth Fuller, Barbara Fox, Duane Black and Kenneth Black and all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be buried next to her husband in North Bend, Nebraska. Services will be Friday, May 17 at 10 am, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 1249 S. 48th St., Mesa.
Charles A. Moore, Jr. (84) passed away May 13, 2013 in Mesa, AZ. He was born in Lockesburg, AR to Charles A. Moore Sr. and Annie Hudson Moore. His whole life was full of adventures. He was in trucking—owning, fixing, and driving 18-wheelers – and it was his passion. His hobbies included anything with wheels, camping, ATV riding, airplanes and flying. He lived a very active life filled with family, many relatives and friends. Charles is survived by Nelda, his loving wife of 63 years, his 4 children Jeannine Moore, Kennith (Dana) Moore, Linda Furr, Gary (Linda) Moore, (all of Mesa), 9 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and his sister Marquita McCrone (Tucson). Funeral services will be Friday, May 17, 2013 at 11 AM preceded by a viewing at 10 AM at the Evergreen Ward, 1345 E. University Dr., Mesa, AZ. Arrangements by Bunker’s Garden Chapel.
Carolyn Elizabeth Randall (Kleinman), 84 years old, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2013. She was born May 4, 1928 in Savannah, GA. Carolyn was an educator for twenty-eight years in the Mesa Public Schools at Webster and Lowell Elementary Schools. Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband Clinton H. Randall, killed while serving on the aircraft carrier USS Leyte on October 16, 1953. Carolyn is survived by her sons Clinton (Marilou) Randall and Craig Randall, daughter Jalene (Ron) Hartley, sisters Barbara Huish and Mary Naylor, 8 Grandchildren and 16 Great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Friday, May 17th 6-8 PM at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 North Centennial Way, Mesa.
Funeral services will be held at the LDS Church, 616 S Extension Rd., Mesa on Saturday, May 18th at 11 AM with visitation one hour prior to the service. The family wishes to thank the wonderful workers at Heart Prints Group Home for their loving care with special appreciation to Marilyn and Kim Willis. Our gratitude to Reflections Hospice for their nurturing support.
George Albert Lewis, 92, passed away on May 5, 2013 in Mesa, AZ. Born on Aug. 3, 1920, he is survived by his children: Kristine Feezor, Les, Eldon and Jerry Lewis, Beth Arney and their spouses, 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Services will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 2:00 p.m., preceded by a visitation at 1 PM at the LDS church, 233 W. 10th Ave, Mesa, AZ 85210. Arrangements by Bunker’s Garden Chapel.
Robert Haws Rowley, 77, passed away May 7, 2013 in Tempe, Arizona. Visitation is Friday, May 10, 2013 from 6-8 PM at the LDS Olive Ward, 525 East 2nd Ave., Mesa, AZ 85204. Funeral services are Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 10 AM, preceded by a visitation at 9 AM at the same location. Arrangements by Bunker’s Garden Chapel.
Derek Allen Beach was born February 29, 1984 in Mesa, Arizona to Roland and Carla Beach. Derek grew up in a busy and eventful household filled with 9 children. Being the second youngest didn’t stop Derek from forging his large personality and ability to make his presence known as soon as he walked into the room. Two weeks after marrying his wife Kaela, Derek was diagnosed with stage four Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. In July 2009, Derek’s son Camden was born while he endured chemotherapy and a transplant. After many more chemotherapies, radiation treatments, and two bone marrow transplants, Derek always kept a positive attitude and smile on his face and found immense joy in being at home with his family. Derek passed away from complication of his treatments on May 1, 2013 and is survived by his wife Kaela, his son Camden, his parents, and 8 siblings. Derek’s viewing is Friday, May 10th from 6-8 PM at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 N Centennial Way in Mesa. His funeral is Saturday, May 11 at 10 AM at the LDS Chapel, 1111 E Knox Rd in Tempe.

Robert (Bob) Clinton Haden, 89, of Mesa, Arizona, passed away on April 16, 2013 in Mesa, Arizona. Robert was born in Graham, Texas to Ted and Viola Haden on September 16, 1923. He attended Texas A&M and the University of Texas. Robert then entered the banking business ultimately becoming the President of First Citizens Bank in Dallas, Texas and then First Security Bank in Mesa, Arizona. He also was President of the Arizona Bankers Association. After a distinguished 22 year career in banking, receiving several Certificates of Merit from the American Institute of Banking, Robert turned to commercial real estate in 1968 where he was actively engaged in all aspects of commercial real estate brokerage, investment analysis, and appraising. Yvonne E. Ellsworth, 80, passed away at her home in Mesa, Arizona on April 21, 2013. Her family and her faith have been the focus of her life. A cheerful and loving mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Monroe W. Ellsworth, infant daughter, Ilene Obershaw, and infant great-granddaughter, Ava DeFranco. The oldest of 7 children, she is survived by all of her six siblings, her sons Dennis Ellsworth and Duane Obershaw, her daughters Iris Shumway and Jolene Williams, also 11 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Friday, April 26, 2013 at 9 AM at the Beverly Ward LDS Chapel, 1054 W. 2nd Place, Mesa, AZ 85201, preceded by visitations Thursday evening, April 25th from 6-8 PM at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 N. Centennial Way, Mesa, AZ 85201 and at 8 AM Friday, in the Relief Society Room prior to the service. Burial will be at the Show Low Cemetery. Her sparkling optimism and loving ways will be missed, and we look forward to a joyous reunion.
Lola May Pearce Smith, 91, of Mesa died Tuesday, April 16, 2013 after a brief illness. She was with her family when she peacefully passed away. Lola May was a lifelong resident of Arizona spending her early years in Northern Arizona where she was born in Taylor. As a young girl she moved with her family to Mesa. She was pre-deceased by her husband Ross as well as a grandson. She is survived by her children: Ronald Smith (Annette) of Idaho, Mark Smith (Kathy) of Mesa, Sandra Howell (Jack) of CA and LouAnn Done (Mark) of Mesa; 9 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren; sister Ruby Efros of Phoenix, and brothers Marion Pearce of Mesa and Melvin Pearce of Idaho. Lola May enjoyed gardening, quilting & sewing and was an avid genealogist. Lola May was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and belonged to the Westwood ward. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday April 23, 2013 10 AM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 1054 W. 2nd Place in Mesa. Evening viewing is scheduled for Monday April 22nd from 6-8PM at the Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 North Centennial Way, Mesa. Additional viewing is set for one hour prior to her funeral services on Tuesday. Interment will follow the funeral services at the City of Mesa Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her husband.
Gerald (Jerry) Dale Hearn, 83, died April 12, 2013. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family members. He was born October 8, 1929 in Prescott, AZ. He graduated from University of Utah and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a pilot for United Airlines and, in 1972, was the captain of United Flight 855 that was hijacked. He loved to sing and do community theatre. He was a member of the Mesa 30th Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served many years in the Mesa LDS Temple. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; four children: Michael Hearn of Los Alamitos, CA; David (Wendy) Hearn of Los Alamitos, CA; Amy (David) Gotzinger of Mesa; Joshua (Heidi) Hearn of Mesa; 15 grandchildren and a great-grandchild; sister, Linda (Ed) Patterson of Maricopa; brother, Larry (Kristy) Hearn of Yuba City, CA; sister-in-law, Darlene Hearn of Palm Desert, CA. He was preceded in death by his son Darrell Hearn; brother, Eugene Hearn; and daughter-in-law, Karen Hearn. Visitation: Sunday 6-8 p.m., Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 N. Centennial Way, Mesa, AZ. Service: Monday, 11 a.m., Mesa East Stake Center, 2228 E. Brown Rd., with visitation one hour prior. Burial will take place at Mesa Cemetery. Allen, Albert Odell, 81, passed away April 13, 2013. He was Albert and Lily Allen’s Christmas present in 1931, the oldest of seven. Born and raised in the Gila Valley, he married his sweetheart, Thelma Harrington, March 18, 1953 in the Mesa LDS Temple. Thelma preceded him in death in 2005. He will be missed by his five children, Dennis (Clover), Terri (Chris) Strahan, Mark (Sherri), Scott (Katie), and LeAnn (Dean) Purser, 15 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 6 siblings and numerous nephews and nieces. Visitation is Thursday, April 18, 2013 from 6-8 PM at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 N. Centennial Way, Mesa, AZ 85201. Funeral services are Friday, April 19, 2013 at 10 AM at the LDS Chapel, 1150 W. 87, of Mesa, Az passed away on April 12, 2013. Wife of E. Gwain Cluff (deceased). Eloise was known in her Church and Community for her life long service to others, her incredible piano abilities, her sense of humor and her incomparable laugh.
