TAMMY SUE STRANGE
Tammy was born May 3, 1961 in Alamosa, Colorado. She is the second girl, and also the fifth and youngest child of Hazel and Marvin Martin. When she was 3 1/2 years old her family moved to Mesa, Arizona, where she remained the rest of her life. She loved Mesa with all her heart and never wanted to leave. She excelled in playing the clarinet while attending Westwood High School, and was in the Honor Choir. She graduated from Westwood in 1979. She worked as a phlebotomist at Desert Samaritan Hospital for nine years.
Tammy was completely devoted to her husband, Scott, and they have lived happily through years and years together with their many puppies and kitties. Tammy loved movies with great conversations and CNN and MSNBC for current events and opinions. She was a happy extrovert who loved people and especially children.
Tammy passed away August 23, 2014.
Glenae Turley is a remarkable person. She was born in Mesa, AZ to Don and Martha Turley, the fourth of nine children and second of five girls. Although one of a large family group she distinguished herself by taking a different route from time to time. All five of the girls played sports, especially softball. Four were pitchers, Glenae was a catcher. The family was very musical and four of the girls played the violin, Glenae played the cello and bass. She distinguished herself as a multi-sport athlete, and in youth leadership roles.
Glenae has always looked to serve and care for others. She served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in La Paz, Bolivia ’88-’89 to bless the lives of people with the gospel of Jesus Christ, and she chose a career path of caring for those in need of comfort and aid. She remained a faithful member throughout her life where she served in numerous callings and excelled in teaching the youth.
She achieved a fire science degree from UVU and spent nearly 20 fulfilling years as a Paramedic/Firefighter for West Jordan, South Jordon, AirMed and 15 years with Murray City, which became her extended family. She was honored with many awards and recognitions for her service, expertise and lifesaving skills. As if being a paramedic/firefighter was not enough, she also earned her Registered Nurse license, an accomplishment of which she was very proud.
Glenae was anything outdoors. She loved to ride her ATV and motorcycle, camp, hike, swim, scuba, kayak, bike, rappel, bungee jump, ski and board. She enjoyed gardening and canning food. Her passion was Emergency Preparedness and Ham Radio.
Cancer took her away too soon from the people she loved, and those who loved her. She is survived by her sisters Gay, Genie, Gennifer, Genice, and her brothers, Guy, Greg, Gary, and Geoff, as well as 28 nieces and nephews, countless friends, co-workers, and those she treated, helped, and served. Her parents preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 11 AM in the Holladay 1st Ward, 2065 East 4675 South. Friends and family may call Friday evening 6 to 8 pm at Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary, 1950 East Dimple Dell Rd. (10600 S), and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:45 AM prior to services at the ward. Interment will be in the Mesa City Cemetery, Mesa, AZ
Wilma Lillywhite Washburn was born Oct. 19, 1929 and was called back home to be with her husband, Quinn, children, Harold and Shirley, and grandson TJ on Wednesday, August 20, 2014. Left to carry on her traditions of love are her seven sons: Robert, Walter, Verl, Glen, Brent, Brian and Roger. Her legacy will continue through 28 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. After raising her children, she lost her husband Quinn in 1997, and enjoyed lots of time with her posterity. She was later remarried to Allan Brooks in 2001, and he passed in 2012. Wilma will be missed very dearly by all who knew her. Funeral services are Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 10 AM at the Kimball East Stake Center, 4640 E. Holmes, Mesa AZ, preceded by a visitation from 6-8 PM on Friday, the 22nd, at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 N. Centennial Way in Mesa.
Dale Scott Ravesloot, 51, of Mesa, Arizona; passed away on August 18, 2014 in Mesa. He was born in Harvey, Illinois on June 13, 1963. Funeral Services will be from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Friday, August 22, 2014 at Bunker’s University Chapel, 3529 E. University Drive in Mesa.
Barbara, a very dear and special wife, mother, and grandmother, was called back to her Heavenly Father on Thursday, August 14, 2014. She was born and raised in Bluewater, New Mexico. She met her husband in Bluewater, where he spent summers working. They were married in the LDS Mesa Temple on Feb. 15, 1940. Their posterity is now over 200 including 65 grandchildren, 129 great grandchildren, and 7 great, great grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 74 years, Anthon Gilbert Richardson, nine of their 10 children, Gary (Debbie), Paul (Joyce), Garth (Rebecca), Russell (Sheila), Becky Zeigler, Bonnie Young (Daniel), Clay (Shelley), Wade (Shelly), and Brookie McCleve (Loren) and four siblings, Ruth Lowery, Ora Amanda Sabin, Iris Bunker, and Ernst Tietjen.
She was preceded in death by her parents Amos and Barbara Tietjen, one son Leroy, and four siblings, Genevieve Hassel, Amos Jr. Tietjen, Permelia Bunker, and Roanna Spencer.
Barbara has set a wonderful example for her family to follow. She truly lived a life of devoted service to her family and all who knew her. She and Anthon were privileged to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Thoreau, New Mexico. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy of faith, love, strength, and dedication.
Her Funeral will be held on Friday, August 22, 2014 at 10 AM, with a viewing at 9 AM at the LDS Extension Ward Chapel, 616 S. Extension Rd. Mesa, AZ 85210
Joseph R. Tomasic, 98, a 36 year resident of Mesa passed away on Sunday, August 10, 2014 of natural causes; he was surrounded by his family at death. He was born in Lorain, Ohio on July 8, 1916. Joe was a steel worker, spending 42 years in the employee of the U.S. Steel Corp. national tube division. Retiring as a plant general foreman.
Joe spent one year in the CCC camps during the depression and graduated from Lorain High School in 1936. He was an avid sportsman and played hockey and softball as well as soccer for many years. In 1978 he and his wife Beverly moved to the valley where they were very active in both round and square dance groups. In 1999 he was named volunteer of the month for his work in tax preparation with the AARP.
Survivors include: Robert (Carol) Tomasic of Waterville; OH, Jeanne (Donal) Lambdin of Amherst, OH; Jack of Mesa, AZ; and Joe (Kathy) of Gilbert, AZ. Stepsons: Robert (Joyce) Bainbridge of Elyria, OH; and Jon (Gail) Bainbridge of Loraine, OH. Joe had 8 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother: Jim and sister: Mary Skolnicki in OH.
He was preceded in death by his wife Beverly in 1999. 1st wife: Jennie in 1972. His parents: Blaz (1935) and Kata (Mihalic) 1985, brother’s: Steve, Martin, Mike, William, Robert, Paul and sister Annie.
A private memorial service was held at Bunker’s University Chapel in Mesa, Arizona
Cal V Rohner, 89, passed away on August 8, 2014, in Mesa, Arizona, surrounded by his family and sweet wife Eyvonne. He was born in Pima, Arizona to Alfred and Lavena Rohner. During his lifetime, Cal worked as a machinist, entrepreneur, contractor, dairyman, and inventor. He built equipment and machinery that was necessary for any task at hand, including parts for his concrete pumping truck as well as go-carts for his family. He joined the Navy and served in World War II. He used his skills in photography in the service and it became a lifelong hobby. Cal was an outdoor chef. He was locally famous in Southern California for his “Rohner burgers”. He moved to Arizona 40 years ago where he was well known for his delicious barbecued smoked beef. He enjoyed spending time with his family and was always involved in serving others, both in and out of church callings, including nearly 20 years of service at the Mesa LDS Cannery. Cal is survived by his wife of 70 years, Eyvonne, five children and their respective spouses, 25 grandchildren, 70 great-grandchildren, and two siblings. Visitation is Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014 from 6-8 PM at Bunker’s University Chapel, 3529 E. University Dr., Mesa, AZ. Funeral services are Friday, Aug. 15, 2014 at 10 AM, preceded by a visitation at 9 AM, at the Mesa East Stake Center, 2228 E. Brown Rd., Mesa, AZ. Interment will be at City of Mesa Cemetery, 1212 N. Center St., Mesa, AZ.
Grant Edward Kelley, wonderful husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend passed away August 7, 2014. Grant was born in Tucson, Arizona on July 1, 1961 to Criss and Judy Kelly. He had a happy childhood filled with family, friends and fun adventures as he lived in Tucson, Mesa, Phoenix, California and Iran. He graduated from Mesa High School in 1979 where he swam on the swim team (even competing at the state meet), won awards for his architectural designs and drafting and played trombone in the band. At 19 he left Mesa to faithfully serve an LDS mission in the Belgium, Brussels mission where he had wonderful experiences and made great lifelong friends. When he returned, he married his eternal sweetheart, Karen Cowgur, who had been his best friend since they met in 7th grade band. He graduated from MCC and ITT Tech and worked as a design engineer with many companies, mostly in the medical engineering field. For the past 6 years, he enjoyed working at Solid Concepts. He always had an intelligent mind for mathematics and loved designing and creating something that started as an idea and then turned that idea into a reality.
Everyone that knew Grant loved him for his kindness, his always-present smile, his devotion to his family, his faithfulness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and his willingness to help anyone and put their needs before his own. He loved traveling, snow skiing, boating, water skiing, cycling, and being with those he loved. He is survived by his wife, Karen Cowgur Kelley, his children Clint (Litsy,) Kacy Sparrow (Jonathan,) Ryan (currently serving an LDS mission in Argentina,) and Geena and his precious grandson Boston. His parents Criss and Judy Kelley and siblings Kenny (Leslie,) Aaron (Michelle,) and Kristen Johnson-Martinez (David,) as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins mourn his passing.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Banner Gateway Hospital ICU who were all so helpful and kind during the week of Grant’s critical illness with liver failure and pancreatitis.
A Visitation will be held Thursday, August 14th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 N. Centennial Way in Mesa. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday August 15th at the Alta Mesa LDS Stake Center located at 5350 East McLellan Road in Mesa. Kimberly K. Lawrence, 52, passed away August 4, 2014 in Phoenix, AZ. Kim’s life began August 15th, 1961 in Des Moines, Iowa, where she attended Ankeny High School and continued her education at The University of Iowa obtaining a B.S. degree. She eventually completed her Master’s in Speech Pathology at California State University, Long Beach. Kim became a resident of California after receiving her Master’s and lived in Seal Beach enjoying the southern California life style while working at Long Beach Memorial Hospital. In 1989, she relocated to Arizona to be close to her sister Robin, and was eventually married to her husband Bob of 20 years. She then started a 10-year career in social work and made a career change in 2000 to pharmaceutical sales. Her drive, high energy and obvious competency were ultimately recognized and she was most recently promoted to a Division Manager at Forrest Labs. Kim loved to experience new things and was a bit of a thrill seeker. She even went skydiving in Eloy, AZ. She was an avid runner and loved all sports, especially her Hawkeyes. She was also a tireless animal lover. She strived to be the best at any chosen endeavor and expected nothing less of those people around her. Some people would say she was a little spirited or competitive – she was. Some would say she was caring and extremely compassionate – she was. She loved those around her intensely. For those that were in her inner circle, there were no boundaries to that love. She loved her family and friends and they loved her. Her father, Dale Shaw, preceded Kim in death. She will be celebrated and sadly missed by her husband, Bob and dog Oliver, mother Sandy and step-father Jay Strosnider of Ankeny, IA, grandmother Lavonne Johnson, brother Todd and sister-in-law Lisa, nephews Ryan and Nicholas all of Ankeny, IA, sister Robin and brother-in-law Craig Hagen, niece Jordan and nephew Brody all of Gilbert, AZ, as well as many other friends. Gods speed to you Kim as you continue your journey in Heaven. We look forward to the day we are all reunited. Paul, 77, was called back to his heavenly home on Monday, August 4th, in Mesa, AZ. He is survived by 4 siblings Richard, Deonne, Lynn, and Mark; his loving and devoted wife, Lynda Brenchley; his 4 children Preston, Michelle, Renee, and Paul; his 3 step-children Darla, Dallas, and Danny; 30 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Preston and Alta; first wife, Yvonne; step-daughter, Diane; and sister Carla. Paul was married to Yvonne (Bonnie) Brenchley for 37 years until her passing and then to Lynda Finch Brenchley for 16 years. Paul grew up in Wellsville, UT and attended South Cache High School. He faithfully served a two-year full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Minneapolis, Minnesota area. He went on to earn his undergraduate degree from Utah State University and later, his Doctorate in Dental Science from Northwestern University. He practiced dentistry in Phoenix, AZ for 36 years before retiring. Upon retiring, he served two missions with his wife Lynda in Martin’s Cove, WY and a humanitarian mission in the Phoenix area. Paul was loved and admired by all who knew him. He leaves an honorable legacy of faith, love, strength, and dedication for his family to follow. Visitation is Fri., Aug. 8, 2014 from 6-8 PM at the LDS Church, 2220 N. Harris, Mesa, AZ. Funeral services are Sat., Aug. 9th at 11 AM at the same location, with visitation at 10 AM.
Frank Eldon Rhoden, 75, was born June 24, 1939 in Fairbury, Nebraska. He passed away August 3, 2014 in Mesa, Arizona. He leaves a wife, Fae, a brother, John, 5 children, 25 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both parents, a brother, a son and 2 grandchildren. He served in the Army in the 101st Airborne Division. Frank spent most of his life buying and selling construction equipment and ended up owning and operating his own company until he retired in 2003. His hobbies were hunting, fishing, golfing, and traveling. He was a member of the LDS Church, serving in several positions. He worked in the Mesa Temple for 8 years. Visitation will be at Friday, August 8, 2014 from 6-8 PM at Bunker’s University Chapel, 3529 E. University, Mesa. Services will be Saturday, August 9, 2014 at 11 AM at the LDS Church, 2559 E. Combs, San Tan Valley, with visitation at 10 AM.
Erin Earl Moore, 46, passed away August 2, 2014 in Mesa, Arizona. Erin was born June 1, 1968 in Mesa, AZ. Surviving family members include daughter Samantha Moore (Mesa, AZ), parents David and JoAnn Moore (Mesa, AZ), and siblings Kelly Moore (Kansas City, MO), Mathew Moore (Holbrook, AZ), Nancy Linford (Gilbert, AZ), and Tracy Moore (Gilbert, AZ).
Funeral services will be August 9, 2014 at 10 AM, with visitation at 9 AM, at the LDS chapel at the northeast corner of Mesa Dr. and University in Mesa. Erin was a hard worker and a loyal friend. He loved many outdoor activities including fishing, hunting, and going to the Dunes. If he wasn’t working or playing hard, he was helping someone in need. Ilisapeta Liekina Stephenson, 65, of Mesa, Arizona passed away August 1, 2014 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Funeral services are Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 10 AM, preceded by a visitation at 8 AM at the LDS Inglewood 1st Ward Chapel, 400 Centinela Avenue, Inglewood, California. Yvonne May Graves Pollock, age 86, of Mesa, Arizona passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on Wednesday morning, January 1, 2014. She was born on April 19, 1927 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She moved to Monterey, California in 1950, where she met her husband Richard Edwin Pollock at a USO dance at Fort Ord Army Base. They were married two months later at the Carmel California Mission in 1952. She was a loving mother to her five children. She was creative, fun loving, and very active in her children’s lives. Her family is her biggest treasure. She became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1968 at the age of 41. In 1970, she was sealed to her husband and children in the Los Angeles Temple. Her devotion and enduring faith to the church has been an inspiration to her children and grandchildren. Her youngest daughter, Mary Ann was born with Down syndrome which led her to become a strong advocate and caregiver to those with special needs. She became a foster mother for countless severely handicapped children over a span of 19 years before she suffered a stroke requiring her to move to Mesa, Arizona to be near her family. Preceded in death by her parents Irving and May Graves and brother Irving Graves, she is survived by brothers: Maynard (Judy), Tom (Hedy) and Rick (Sally) Graves; her five children: Colleen (Jeff) Lewis, Karen (Rudy) Komenda, Richard (Leslie) Pollock, Annette (Bill) Castrey and Mary Ann Pollock; her 20 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. She has been our matriarch and pioneer, leaving us a legacy of faith and service. On Monday, January 6, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 p.m., a viewing will be held at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 North Centennial Way, Mesa, Arizona. Services will be held on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at 2424 North Old Gilbert Road, Mesa, Arizona. She will be laid to rest in the City of Mesa Cemetery, 1212 North Center Street, Mesa, Arizona.
Elba Allen, born May 7, 1922 passed away peacefully on January 1, 2014 at the age of 91. She is survived by her three daughters, Georgeann Beaudet (Ed), Marlene Sheppard (Jim) and Roberta Mason (Ron), and 33 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services are Wed., January 8, 2014 at 10 AM, with a viewing at 9 AM, at the LDS Church, Aspen Ward, 1249 S. 48th Street, Mesa. Arrangements by Bunker’s Garden Chapel.
Lela Gardner Steffey, 85, passed away peacefully at home in Mesa, AZ, on January 2, 2014. The youngest of eleven children, Lela was born August 8, 1928, in Idaho Falls, ID, to Orawell and Mary Ethel Owen Gardner. She is survived by her devoted husband of 40 years, Warren Steffey; loving children, Barry (Laura) Hendershott, Brad (Rhonda) Hendershott, and Bart (Cathi) Hendershott; step-children Dean Steffey, Wayne (Trisha) Steffey, Susan (Mike) Eggers, Lu Ann (Tony) Cicci, Scott Steffey; 23 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by son David Howard Hendershott. Lela served faithfully in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in many capacities throughout her life. She was also very politically active, including serving 7 terms in the Arizona State Legislature and as the president of National Order of Women Legislators. Lela loved family, travel, dolls, sports, the color purple, chocolate, and spending summers in San Diego. Visitation will be January 9, 2014 from 6-8 PM @ Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 N Centennial Way, Mesa, AZ. Services will be January 10, 2014, 11 AM @ LDS Church, 1550 N Val Vista Drive Mesa, AZ 85213.
