David Austin Killian

David Austin Killian was born July 29, 1988. He passed away July 1, 2015. David arrived on his parent’s 10th wedding anniversary and instantly brought great joy to his family. David is a Mesa High graduate and a proud member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. David is survived by his parents Elden David Killian and his mother Susan Jean Dudley Killian and brothers Seth Killian and Jacob Killian as well as his grandmother Shirlene Sargent and many aunts and uncles and cousins. David was a very gifted guitarist, poet and had a great sense of humor which was enjoyed by all who came to know him.  David began his journey after a three year struggle with heart complications in Tucson Arizona. The viewing will be at 6 PM, followed by funeral services at 7 PM, Friday July 10, 2015 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1315 S. 24th St. Mesa, Arizona. Interment will be Saturday, July 11, 2015 at 7 AM at the Salt River Indian Community Lehi Cemetery in Lehi, Arizona. Funeral arrangements handled by Bunker’s Garden Chapel.

Peter James Hager

Peter James Hager, 66, of Tempe, passed away July 2, 2015 in Tempe, Arizona.  Peter was born December 25, 1948 in Phoenix, Arizona. Peter is a veteran of the Vietnam War where he earned an Army commendation medal and a Vietnam service medal with 4 bronze service stars.  He honorably served for 3 years with 1 year of active duty service in Vietnam as a radio operator.  In his leisure time he once pursued skydiving, fly fishing, raised racing pigeons, and was an avid photographer. He was a generous man and had an unforgettable sense of humor. He will be missed by all.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Kathleen; daughters, Kendell Gans (David) of Phoenix, AZ.; and Karley Piercy (Michael) of Chandler, AZ; one grandson, Ari Gans; a sister, Lana McGinnis (Jack) of California City, CA; and a brother Michael V. Hager. Peter was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence V. and Bessie L. Hager.

Funeral services will be held at the Tempe Stake Center at 2707 S. College Ave. in Tempe on Friday, July 10th, 2015 at 9:30 a.m.; preceded by a visitation at 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. that morning. Interment will follow at the National Memorial Cemetery, 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd. in Phoenix. There will also be a visitation held on Thursday evening, July 9, 2015 from 6 -8 PM at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 N. Centennial Way in Mesa.

Jaren Lambert Tolman
07/30/1919 - 06/28/2015

Jaren L. Tolman, loving husband, father, grandpa, son, brother and friend, passed away on June 28, 2015, at the age of 95 years old.

Jaren lived a life of service not only to his family and church, but to his community and his country. He served as a Captain in the United States Army during World War II. Upon his return home, he began a life-long career as an educator in Logan, Utah. In 1948 Jaren moved to Mesa, Arizona, where he continued his career as a high school math teacher in Mesa Public Schools for 30 years, and completed his career as the Assistant Principal of Kino Jr. High. Jaren dedicated himself to serving the Lord and the Church throughout his life. He served as a Bishop of the Mesa 27th Ward before he served as Temple Recorder in 1991. The Tolmans were blessed to serve a mission in the state of Mississippi as well as in Superior, Arizona.

Jaren is survived by his wife of 70 years, Norma Tolman, his children and their spouses, Robert and Marlene Tolman, Bonnie Kottraba, Janet and Ivan Johnson, and Reed and Debbie Tolman, his 20 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sat., July 4, 2015 at the Santan Stake Center, 4170 S. Ranch House Pkwy, Gilbert, AZ 85298, with a viewing from 8:30-9:45 AM and funeral at 10 AM. Arrangements by Bunker’s Garden Chapel.

Carol Ann Carpenter, 70, of Mesa, born March 28, 1945, passed away June 23, 2015. She was preceded in death by her mother Bonnie Marie (Hendrix) Halverson, and father James Herman Carpenter. She is survived by her children, Teri Wells (David), Douglas Conkel, Silas Dungy (Kelly), Jimmy Carpenter (Laura), 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren and sister Lois Randall (LaVerl), brother Jimmy Carpenter (Linda), step-mother Maxine Carpenter, step-sister Dianne Melander and step-brother David Melander.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, July 2, 2015 at 10 AM, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Lehi 1st Ward, 810 E. Lehi Rd., Mesa. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to Hospice of the Valley. Arrangements by Bunker’s Garden Chapel.

Alene Zufelt Giles
September 19, 1932 - June 27, 2015

Alene Zufelt Giles, a devoted wife, mom, grandma, and nana passed away on June 27, 2015 at the age of 82 in Mesa, Arizona.  She was born September 19, 1932 in Duchesne, Utah to Alva Watson and LaFreda Wright Zufelt.  She married her forever sweetheart, Jay Fred Giles in the Salt Lake Temple on November 24, 1948.  They raised their 4 children in the beautiful Heber Valley in Utah.  Alene was an active member of the LDS Church serving in many positions during her lifetime.  Of all of her callings in life, she loved being a wife, mom and grandma the most.

She is survived by her 3 daughters: Vickie (Michael Hyre, Joy (Ronald) Helminski, and Wendy (Thomas) Broschinsky and 14 grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren.  She is preceded in death by her husband: Jay Fred Giles and son: Brent Jay, along with her parents and siblings.

Funeral Services will be Thursday, July 2, 2015 at 11:00 am at the LDS Church located at: 19413 S. Sossaman Rd., Queen Creek, AZ 85142.  A viewing will be held prior to the funeral from 10:00 am to 10:45 am.

Grave dedication will be Thursday, July 9, 2015 at 11:00 am at the Heber City Cemetery in Heber City, Utah.

Norma Murrie Huish

Norma Murrie (Berardi) Huish, 88, passed away June 21, 2015 in Rexburg, Idaho while visiting her son. She was born October 7, 1926 in Florence, Colorado.

She is survived by her husband, Leo Rae Huish, and 8 children, Jennifer (Jay) Hathcock of Mesa, AZ; Jonathan (Jill) Huish of Austin, TX; Patrick (Shellie) Huish of Rexburg, ID; David (Debbie) Huish of Snowflake, AZ; Nancy (Matt) Salmon of Mesa, AZ; Aaron (Mechell) Huish of Mesa, AZ; Amy Carpenter of Chandler, AZ; and Miriam (Kimball) Lovin of Salt Lake City, UT. Her descendants include 39 grandchildren, 61 great-grandchildren with 10 more on the way.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Stephen and Nancy Hannah McLoney Berardi; two sisters, Joyce Inglish and Jean Cox; a son, Stephen Grant Huish; and grandson, Grant Carpenter.

Norma lived a full, healthy life as a wife, mother and homemaker. She was filled with love and service for family, friends, and church. She is remembered by family and friends as one who spent many years doing family history and name extraction. She spent countless hours sewing and creating handcrafted items for others.  She touched the lives of many and has, in her own way, changed the world through her compassion and devotion to her family. She took pride in the beauty of her home spending many hours renovating and decorating period homes and adding her own unique touch. Most of all, she will always be remembered as a mother who created a safe and loving home where her children and grandchildren could feel the warmth and tenderness of her spirit. Her kindness and gentleness will always be in the hearts and minds of those who knew and loved her.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 N. Centennial Way in Mesa from 6 to 8 PM. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 2, 2015 at 10 AM preceded by a visitation at 9 AM, located at the LDS chapel, 2618 N. Lindsay Road, Mesa.

Ronald “Ron” Corneliusen

Ronald “Ron” Corneliusen, 87, of Mesa, AZ (formerly of Lenexa, KS) passed away June 23, 2015.  Ron’s early years were spent in Benson, MN until he joined the Army in 1946.  He spent his service years in El Paso, TX, Korea, Japan and Germany.  After retiring from the service, he began a career with Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms as an inspector.  To his children he could do anything; build storm windows, sew couch slipcovers and bake the best bread.  He is survived by: Colleen (Carl) Lorson, John (Caren) Corneliusen and Ann (Jim) Balquist and six grandchildren: Nick, Elizabeth, Kylie, Hunter, Brian and Brett; sister Donna (Harold) Krenz of MN and all his friends at the Red Mountain Café.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mesa Public Libraries or KAET Arizona Public Television.

Nelson, Gladys Dixon

Gladys Dixon Nelson passed away at the age of 93 on June 22, 2015 in Mesa, Arizona. Gladys was born to Leroy and Electa Dixon and raised in Provo, Utah. In 1941 she married her high school sweetheart, Ivan W. Nelson, in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they raised their 6 children in Phoenix, AZ. As a devoted wife and mother, Gladys’ greatest joy in life was her family, 25 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren. She served faithfully in callings for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her loving nature, humble grace, noble character, and unwavering testimony of the Lord leave a great legacy to all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her son, David, and husband, Ivan. Gladys is survived by sons Bill (Jeanne), and Kent (Kathleen) and daughters Diane Garns (Allen), Carolyn Shockey (Jerry) and Julie Morris (Kevin).

Services in MESA, AZ will be held on Friday, June 26, 2015 at the LDS Three Fountains Ward, 1852 N. Stapley Drive, Mesa, Arizona. Visitation will be at 9:00 AM, followed by funeral services at 10:00 AM.

Services in PROVO, UT will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at Berg Mortuary, 185 E. Center St., Provo Utah. Visitation will be at 10:00 AM, followed  by funeral services at 11:00 AM.

Interment will be at the Provo City Cemetery, 610 S. State Street, Provo, Utah. Arrangements by Bunker’s Garden Chapel, Mesa, Arizona.

Arnold Matheson
July 3, 1940 - June 17, 2015

Arnold Richard Matheson, 74, was born July 3, 1940 in Rhode Island. He passed away on June 17, 2015 at Archstone Care Center in Chandler, AZ. He is survived by his children: Richard (Serena) Matheson of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, Joanne (Gary) Donaldson from Mesa, AZ, and Donna (Doug) Stanger from Lakeside, AZ., siblings: Debra (Jerry) Porter of Mesa, AZ and Sue Anne (Don) Echols of Tumwater, WA., as well as many grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Mildred (Buckless) Matheson, brothers Raymond and Peter, and a son, Ronald.


Arnold owned his own business in Air Conditioning and enjoyed the heat of Arizona. He also enjoyed working as a mechanic and learned a great deal from his father. There will be a visitation at 9am on Monday, June 22, 2015 at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 N Centennial Way, Mesa, AZ 85201, followed by the dedication of the grave at 10:30am at the Mesa Cemetery.

April 20, 1942 - June 14, 2015

Bonnie Jean Irick (Wendler) was called home Sunday, June 14, 2015.  Bonnie, a retired dog groomer, devoted her years to animals, crafting and her family and friends.  She is survived by her husband James of 53 years, son Timothy (Cheryl), daughter Wendy (Shaun Brown), son Kevin (Lisa), grandchildren, Meredith, Emily, Jacob, Brian and brother Paul Hunt (Kathryn). An open house celebration of life will be held at the Irick home on Saturday, July 11th from 2-6pm.  In lieu of flowers, donations to Arizona Poodle Rescue, arizonapoodlerescue.org are suggested.
