David Scott Fabiano
February 6, 1967 - September 4, 2025

Mesa, Arizona – Our dearly beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend – David Scott Fabiano, 58 – passed away on 4 September 2025. After experiencing the challenges of an aggressive brain tumor for the past 2 ½ years, David spent his final days enjoying the company of his family and friends, some beloved ice cream, and finally, Laura’s cookies.

David was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, to L. Joe and W. Claudene Fabiano. He was the second twin of the second set of twins in the Fabiano family. As the seventh of eight children, all born within eight years, David cherished his upbringing in this full home. He considered his siblings his best friends his entire life. The family moved often when David was young. He loved the time spent in southwest Colorado where he began honing his skill of running cost/risk analysis. He became legendary for not returning home after school until sunset, even though he was supposed to come straight home. When asked why he would face the wrath of his father every night, David would simply reply, “There was a creek to play in. If I went home, I would have to do chores and homework. It was worth the swat.”

The family eventually settled in Farmington, NM where David attended junior high and high school. David’s mom used to say that “David got good enough grades to play football.” He didn’t enjoy homework, even though he loved learning. After high school, David served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He spent 2 years in Indiana, and he loved his time there. His twin, Mark, was serving in the Dominican Republic at the same time, and David expressed gratitude that he only had to suffer the cold of Indiana rather than the bugs and vermin of the DR.

After his mission, David spent some time in Farmington, NM, then Salt Lake City, UT, and finally Mesa, AZ, where he met Laura soon after he arrived. They met in a choir of young single adults where David shined as a tenor and a natural performer. Within a few months, they began dating and were married on June 1, 1990, in the Mesa, AZ temple. 3 days later, David began college full-time. With the prospect of a family to provide for, David was a much more motivated student, graduating magna cum laude with a BS in Civil Engineering and a Master’s just a year later. This began his lifetime passion for public works and servant leadership.

David started his career at Gannett Fleming in 1993 while still a student at ASU. In Jan. 2000, he moved to Stanley Consultants where he remained for 16 years. David loved driving all over the state of Arizona meeting with clients and attending council meetings, helping communities improve their public works. In 2016, David told Laura that he wanted to move to the public side of his profession. He wanted to affect change that could only occur if he was on the other side of the table. In Sep. 2016, David changed sides and began working as the Town Engineer for the Town of Gilbert. Laura was excited for a government job since that would mean 40-hour work weeks instead of 60-80. She should have known better. David worked as tirelessly for Gilbert as he did as a consultant. He was a champion of doing things the right way the first time, defending proper right-of-way practices, and tackling hard things, rather than kicking the can down the road to create problems for the future. David certainly attained his goal to improve the world around him.

David’s greatest joy was his children. Erin and Brianna joined the family while David was still in college. He would pick them up from the babysitter a few hours before Laura got home from work, and they would have a ball. Matthew, Anthony, Nathanael, and Caleb came along over the next seven years. Even with six young children, David and Laura both felt that there were two more little girls meant to join the fun. Raelynn and Jocelyn arrived soon after, and we finally felt complete.  When one of David’s former scouts came calling on his oldest daughter, David was thrilled. And once grandchildren entered the picture, joy took on a whole new meaning.

Almost as soon as David and Laura were married, David was called to work with the young men at church and was very active in the Boy Scouts of America program. He was all in. Pinewood Derbies, camping with the Scouts, making knives with the Varsity boys, Varsity triathlons, training other leaders through the Woodbadge program, countless Eagle projects, National Jamboree, and his very favorite: backpacking at Philmont. David was awarded many scout leadership awards, including the Silver Beaver award in 2011.

As a college student, David joined the student chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) and remained an active member for the rest of his life. He participated in the Arizona chapter leadership for many years and then became the Arizona delegate to the National Congress of APWA. In 2018, David became a member of the APWA National Board as the Region VII director. He loved his time with this elect group of people. David set a great example of how to disagree without being disagreeable.

The guiding star of David’s life was his unshakable faith in Jesus Christ. As an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, David spent countless hours serving in many roles, impacting the lives of all those around him. He enjoyed being able to assist those in need at any time. He loved having a garage full of tools that anyone could borrow. If he didn’t have the tool you needed, just give him 20 minutes, and he’ll run buy it, so you can borrow it. He took selflessness to a whole new level.

David particularly adored worshiping through music. He enjoyed participating in choirs and musical productions while still in school. He continued to be the rock of every church choir tenor section over the next 40 years. Although he never really learned how to read music, he used to say that he could tell when the notes went up or down. He had a good ear, so even if he was on the wrong note, “at least it was in the chord.” Singing in the Gilbert Temple dedication choir in 2014 was a highlight when David was able to really open up and SING. He had a big voice that matched his big personality. He used this to great advantage when participating in Woodbadge song traditions. “Is there a Beaver in the House?” (If you know, you know.)

David is survived by his adoring wife, Laura; eight children and one son-in-law; three grandsons; his father, Joe; his siblings; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and loved ones. He is preceded in death by his mother, Claudene, and sister-in-law, Andrea. Many thanks to our Gilbert family and our APWA family for their love and support. A special thanks to Mark for being at every doctor visit, every surgery, and always taking care of “your guy.”

A memorial to celebrate David’s life will be held on Friday, September 12, 2025 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1718 N. Date, Mesa, AZ 85201. A visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. The funeral service will begin at 11:30 a.m., with a brief reception to follow. The gravesite service will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Mesa City Cemetery, 1212 N. Center St., Mesa, AZ 85201. All events are open to the public, and we hope that everyone who knew and loved David will be able to join us as we commemorate a life well lived.

The funeral service will be broadcast over Zoom.

Theril H. Lund
6/25/1955 - 8/23/2025

Theril H. Lund passed away on Saturday, August 23, 2025. Theril was born on June 24, 1955, in Long Beach, California, to Theril Lester Lund and Myrna Joy Howard. He spent his early childhood in Hollywood, Long Beach, and Palos Verdes alongside his older sister, Pam, before his father’s career took the family to Houston, Texas, and later to Atlanta, Georgia.

From an early age, Theril loved baseball, go-karts, and dirt bikes. While living in Atlanta, his father was diagnosed with colon cancer and passed away shortly after. His mother then relocated the family to Utah to be closer to relatives, where Theril deepened his connection with his grandparents and many cousins.

The family settled in Bountiful, Utah, where Theril entered junior high. Living at the base of the mountains, he developed a lifelong love for adventure. He persuaded his mom to let him buy a dirt bike, and from then on, he rode through the mountains from Farmington to Salt Lake City—where the rides just got bigger and faster, a passion that carried through his life and became something he was known for.

During his school years, Theril was an active athlete, playing baseball, football, tennis, hockey, and participating in track. He even started the bowling team at Bountiful High School, where he graduated from in 1973. Theril then went on to continue his education while attending Utah State University and Weber State University.

On September 19,1980, Theril married Loni Logan, and they made their home in North Salt Lake City, Utah, where he completed his degree in accounting and became a CPA. They welcomed their first two children, Jill and Craig, during this time. In 1986, Theril returned to his beloved Long Beach, California, for a year before relocating to the Roseville/Granite Bay, California area, where their son Mark was born.

Over the years, Theril worked in automotive, grocery, technology, construction, while using his CPA in accounting. He became a partner at a CPA firm and helped launch what is now Peak Investment Solutions, guiding clients in building their financial futures. In 2003, after retiring from his CPA partnership, the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where Theril worked as General Manager for Freightliner of Arizona. He also continued to grow Peak Investment Solutions and later helped start EVO Natural Gas, expanding his career into energy investments.

Beyond his career, Theril loved being involved in his children’s sports and activities, creating lifelong memories and friendships. After retiring at 60, he returned to his Long Beach roots, enjoying time at his home there as well as in Arizona. He filled his days with golf, beach trips, collecting cars, performance driving, car shows, and air shows.

Most importantly, Theril cherished being “Papa” to his grandchildren, who brought him tremendous joy.

Theril is preceded in death by his parents, Myrna Joy Howard and Theril Lester Lund, and his sister, Pamela Sue Evans. He is survived by his wife of 45 years Loni Lund, children Jill Hutchings (Ryan), Theril Craig Lund (Catriona), and Mark Lund (Robin); and his beloved grandchildren Jayna, Jayden, Brynley, Theril Hudson, Presley, Maverick, and Luna; along with an aunt, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss him dearly.

Evelyn Parry Nielson
11/22/1938 - 8/21/2025

Evelyn Parry Nielson (age 86), our beloved and beautiful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2025, in Mesa, Arizona.

Evelyn was born on November 22, 1938, to Samuel Franklin Parry and Helen Anderson Parry. She was raised in Manti, Utah, with her sister, Pauline. She was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a strong and enduring testimony of the Savior, Jesus Christ. Evelyn served in many church callings and loved every opportunity to serve. She especially loved callings that allowed her to share her musical talents. Evelyn had a beautiful alto singing voice and shared it whenever possible, including as a member of the Tabernacle Choir.

She grew up in Manti, Utah, surrounded by family who loved her dearly and developed many lasting friendships. In 1955, her family moved to Monticello, Utah, where she made many more friendships and graduated from high school. In 1957, she attended Brigham Young University in Provo, where she majored in Physical Education and Dance. While there, she also met Alan Nielson, the love of her life.

Evelyn and Alan were married on October 20, 1961, in the Manti Temple, where they were sealed for time and all eternity. Together they raised four children: Craig, Danalee, Patricia, and Curtis. Family was central to Evelyn’s life, and she found great joy in raising her children and establishing a home centered on Jesus Christ.

Professionally, Evelyn worked as an educator, initially teaching physical education and English at Pleasant Grove High School. After moving with her family to Farmington, New Mexico, she taught elementary music. Later, when her family moved to Mesa, Arizona, she continued teaching and inspiring countless students—including her own children—to love music.

After 27 years, she retired and enjoyed serving in the Mesa Temple for more than 11 years. She also faithfully served two missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with her sweetheart, Alan. During both missions, they made lifelong and cherished friendships.

Evelyn is survived by her loving husband, Alan Nielson; her children, Craig (Tina) Nielson, Danalee (Daniel) Beckert, Patricia (Pete) Peterson, and Curtis (Janene) Nielson; 24 grandchildren; and 44 great-grandchildren.

Thomas J Kirby
6/13/1946 - 8/21/2025

Thomas J. Kirby, born in June 1946 in Alamosa, Colorado, passed away August 21, 2025, at the age of 79, surrounded by his family in Gilbert, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Beverly Kirby of Grand Junction, Colorado, and his sister, Donna Rigby.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Cheryl (Williams) Kirby; his children, Kristie Troy (Ken), Lisa Heuer (Tim), Lindsey Germaine (Jason), and Thomas (TJ) Kirby, Jr. (Lauren); nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Lori Hefner.

Tom graduated from Casper Community College in Wyoming and transferred to Arizona State University, where he graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, majoring in Painting. After serving in the Army National Guard, Tom launched Kirby and Associates, a local marketing and advertising agency in Tempe, Arizona, which he owned and operated for 35 years. An artist at heart, Tom had many creative outlets, from photography, to stone sand etching and rock tumbling, to building award-winning, perfectly to-scale WWII model airplanes. One of his favorite things was “helping” his children with their artistic school projects (the results of which a teacher would never have believed a child created) or crafting beautiful, speed-defying pinewood derby cars with his son.

Tom’s passions included serving as a veteran shooting coach and Junior Division Director for the non-profit Arizona State Rifle and Pistol Association (ASRPA). A National Shooting Championship Gold Medal winner himself, Tom’s greatest pride was coaching his Junior teams to multiple national championships, with many team members earning scholarships and military academy appointments due to their marksmanship and scholastic achievements. As a Civilian Marksmanship Program instructor, he led M-1 Garand Clinics at the Rio Salado Sportsman’s Club in east Mesa. In 2008, well-known for his accomplishments in the sport, Tom was contacted by the U.S. Army 1st Battalion, 11th Infantry Marksmanship Unit at Ft. Benning, Georgia, and received a meritorious achievement award for coaching an expert marksmanship program for their soldiers.

Tom’s love for the outdoors led to countless adventurous camping trips with his family in their travel trailer throughout Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming, and the beaches of Mexico. He had a special interest in trains, a passion passed down from his great-grandfather, Heinie, an engineer on the Rio Grande Narrow Gauge Railway. The infamy of Tom’s fail-proof, guaranteed golden-ladle-prize-winning chili recipe will live on forever with family and friends.

If you knew Tom, you know he was fun-loving and quirky. He loved to make people laugh, whether by talking to you in his perfected Donald Duck voice, convincing you to watch Young Frankenstein while wearing his “Abby Normal” t-shirt, or raising an aquarium of scorpions he caught in his backyard.

A family celebration of life will be held at a later date in Colorado. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, an organization that provides care and support for those with Alzheimer’s and funds accelerated research.
