Rick Carwin Gardner, age 56, died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on October 21, 2024. Rick was born on November 23, 1967, in Holbrook, Arizona. He was the son of Carwin and Loueen and the oldest brother of Carleen, Keith, Elaina, Ryan and Logan.

Rick was raised and spent his whole life in Mesa Arizona. In his youth, he learned to play the piano and trombone, was involved in scouting and played baseball every summer. His love of music, and in particular piano and New Age music was lifelong.

In his teens, he was a member of YAC, the Mesa Library Young Adult Council, in which he read and reviewed books for young adults. His love of reading was also life long, and his reading list was endless. He especially liked science fiction and fantasy including Lord of the Rings, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Dune. He became involved in stage crew and worked in sound and light design for both Mesa and Phoenix Little Theaters. It was also in his teens that he developed an interest in computers and represented his school at the national championship of Future Business Leaders of America in computer programming. His interest in computers led to his career as a computer specialist and IT Consultant where he traveled internationally and enjoyed the opportunity to see the world and try local cuisines.

Rick married the love of his life, Suzanne Nunner, in 1995; raised four children, Chelsea Culver (Tommy), Selena, Landon (Emmy) and Collin; and enjoyed being a grandfather to his three grand “dudes”, Keegan and Kullen O’Neill and Thomas Culver V, who will miss seeing his supporting face at their JROTC events, baseball, basketball, and soccer games.

In addition to his immediate family he leaves behind his mother-in-law, Helen L. Nunner, sister-in-law, Ann M. McLemore, brother-in-law, Alois L. Nunner Jr. and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

He is remembered by his family and friends as a romantic who supported his wife in family history as her chauffeur, computer/technical support and travel planner. His children fondly remember his love of animals, especially cats – which he was allergic to. He rescued not only cats and birds, but also a scorpion which he named Westley in reference to the quote “Good night, Westley. Good work. Sleep well. I’ll most likely kill you in the morning.” from The Princess Bride. If he said he would do something, he did. He was always willing to help and showed up with a plan on how to accomplish it. He loved camping with the family and remained unruffled when things didn’t go as planned, like getting two flat tires on the same trip and having everything get soaked in a torrential downpour that flooded the whole camp site, including clothes and sleeping bags. Ever a fan of having fun, he loved playing games of all types – card, board, or computer games. He even participated in a “play by mail” game.

Rick liked to collect and try many new recipes. He had a collection of cookbooks and loved fresh chopped jalapeños and spicy food (the hotter, the better) but his favorite was ice cream. Another fond memory his kids had was when the freezer broke. Instead of being upset or angry, he took out all of the ice cream, called the kids together, handed them all a spoon and said that the most important thing was to not let the ice cream go to waste!

Rick was preceded in death by his mother, Loueen Gardner and father-in-law Alois L. Nunner.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at 11:00 am at 933 E. Brown Rd., Mesa followed by a Celebration of Life at the same location at 12:00 (noon.) Rick always loved a good potluck, so please bring your favorite dish and a story to share about him and join us in celebrating him.

William “Bill” Greer, 88, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. There to greet him were his parents, Willie Bob and Lois, his sisters, Sarah and Bobbie, his son, Gregg, his grandson, Josh, and many other family members. He leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Pat, his children, Steve Greer (Kenna), Cari Murphy (Jay), Jamie Calbert (Kevin), Jenny Blair (Mike), Julianne Greer, grandchildren, Jared, Jordan, Bethany, Katie, Erin, Kelly, Casey, Shane, Kenzie, Kade, Kason, Kolton, Keely and 10 great-grandchildren.

Bill began life in Little Rock, Arkansas on March 31st, 1936. He spent his childhood in North Little Rock graduating from NLR High School. After graduating he began his military service by joining the Air National Guard in 1954 to do his pilot training. After becoming a pilot, he attended college at the University of Arkansas where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Zoology. Bill would crop dust in the summers while in college to earn a living. After college Bill became Active Duty Air Force serving in multiple capacities including as a Forward Air Controller attached by the Air Force to the Army’s 237th infantry and 101st airborne. Bill retired from his military services as a Colonel in 1988. After retiring Bill began flying as a commercial pilot for PanAm and Atlas Air traveling the world and bringing home many souvenirs and stories from the many places he visited. Bill continued to fly until 2002 when he retired.

Bill spent the next 22 years enjoying his children, grand-children and great-grandchildren and serving his Savior Jesus Christ through multiple callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, January 23rd, 2025 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located at 650 S. Cooper Rd, Chandler, Arizona 85225. Visitation will be at 9:00 am and the service at 10:00 am. Burial will be at the National Memorial Cemetery at 2:00 pm.

Don Hawkes, 75, peacefully passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday, January 12, 2025. There to greet him were his parents, Keith and Barbara, his brother Rob, and a slew of cats. He left behind his loving wife of 52 years, Dorinne, his children Jennifer Huseman (Andy), Sarah Foor (Todd), Isaac Hawkes (Shayna), and Natalie Ortal (Ray), grandchildren Kelton and Kannon, sister Debbie Overton (Timothy), and sister-in-law Nancy Hawkes.

Don married Dorinne in November 1972. During the next 12 years they had four children born in Arizona and Utah. In 1977 Don studied to be a civil engineer and culminated his career with being the Water Utilities Manager at the City of Tempe. He retired in 2013 after 23 years with the City.

During the years that they were married and raising their family Don was always an advocate for doing fun things. Don’s motto was “The Family that Plays Together Stays Together.” Some of the fun things were boating, hiking, Lake Powell’ing, traveling, geocaching, caving, RVing, cruising, and many adventures were enjoyed with family and/or good friends. In addition, Don could never pass up a good prank. Many memories have been made. Don was full of fun, optimism, and cheer. Don could fix or rehab anything. He built a house in Fruit Heights, he renovated his Arizona home, and he installed solar on his RV and boat. For relaxation, he completed difficult crossword puzzles, sat in the sun, and enjoyed nature.

His fun laugh, humor and cheerfulness was much loved and will be missed by his family and friends.

A celebration of life is planned for Saturday January 18, 2025, from 2pm to 6pm at the Hawkes home.

Marjorie A. Tau passed away at the age of 89, surrounded by family in her home in Mesa, AZ on Friday, December 13, 2024. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frank.

Marge was born on January 21, 1935, in Edinboro, PA. She was the 6th child of 12 children born to Cecil and Edna Alward. She graduated from Edinboro High in 1953.

On June 6, 1953, Marge married Frank A. Tau. Frank, Marge and their 4 children moved to Mesa, AZ in 1968. Marge spent most of her career as a well-loved registrar and secretary in Mesa Public Schools. Marge and Frank regularly attended Mesa Nazarene Church, where Marge made many friends and was highly involved in music and missions. She loved time spent with their Sunday school class and game nights with church friends and her family. Marge loved nature, morning walks, cheering on the AZ sports teams, time with the Lord in devotions, and sending encouraging notes and cards to her loved ones. She was a devoted Christian, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, who never missed an opportunity to love, serve, and spend time with her family.

She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Mark (Anne Marie), Fred (Marcella), Phil (Julie), and April McElrath (Steve); 12 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and sisters: Bea Cole (Ray), Lois Richardson (Darrell) and Carol Perlman (Marc). Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and Edna Alward; brothers: Russell, James, Charles, Marvin, John and Thomas; sisters: Irene Biby and Shirley Lewis; her granddaughter, Debra Tau and great grandson, Elijah Marks.

Marge’s legacy of dedication and faithfulness to the Lord, her family and church will live on in the hearts of those who knew her.

A Pre-Reception/Visitation will be held from 9:15 to 10:15 with a Memorial Service following at 10:30 AM on Saturday January 25th at Journey of Grace Nazarene Church, 955 E University, Mesa, AZ, 85203.

Barbara Jane Roubideaux – Martin, 76, passed away peacefully at her home on January 6, 2025, in Apache Junction, Arizona.

Barbara was born May 13, 1948, to Dean and Dorothy (Anderson) Ramseier in Wray Colorado. Barbara attended Wray Public School and enjoyed horses and barrel racing growing up.

She had a strong work ethic that she got from her mother, Dorothy. She was extremely proud of that work ethic, and she passed that down to each of her children. After retiring, she enjoyed her days on her porch sitting with her pets, out of the hot Arizona sun. She truly believed she lived in “God’s country” considering it was so peaceful and quiet.

2 Thessalonians 3:16: “Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times, in all ways. The Lord be with you all”

Barb is survived by her four children, Dennis (Michelle) Davis Colorado; David (Mary Anna) Roubideaux, Colorado; Shenel Wells, Kansas; Countessa Roubideaux, Arizona; her grandchildren and her siblings: Mark Ramseier, Colorado and Jo Ann Scotten, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Pat Willig; and her husband Alfred Martin.

Interment will be held at a later date at Luke’s Airforce Base where her ashes will be placed next to her husband.

Born June 23, 1937 to Virginia and Raymond Poppe. His father died when he was only 6 months old.

Ken graduated from Appleton High School in 1955.  He married the love of his life, Dorothy Bartels Poppe, on December 21, 1957.

He joined the United States Marine Corps Air Wing in 1957 and was stationed in Beaufort, South Carolina. After his service, he returned to Appleton where he worked as an IBEW electrician for the remainder of his career. He retired to Arizona in 1996.

As a youth he liked to play softball, ride his bike, and ice skate. Ken developed a love of woodworking at Appleton High School’s wood shop. He used these skills to make many different things over the years and crafted beautiful, segmented wood bowls and items during his years in retirement.

He shared a love for polka dancing and music with his wife Dorothy. Together they organized a successful polka fest which ran for over 20 years as a fund raiser for Altrusa of Appleton.

Among Ken’s other passions were building and flying RC model airplanes, boating, and playing concertina.  

Ken was baptized at Mount Olive Lutheran in Appleton in 1937 and has been a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod his whole life. The family is comforted in knowing that he is at peace in the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 

Kenneth is survived by his wife Dorothy, and two sons: Charles “Chuck” Poppe and partner Steve Sells from Denver, Colorado; Scott Poppe and his wife Nancy, Grandson Johnathon and Granddaughter Stacy from Phoenix, Arizona.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Damien Rose, age 24, who left this earth too soon on January 4th, 2025. Damien was born on December 23, 2000, in Mesa, AZ, where he grew up surrounded by love and adventure. Raised in the vibrant Phoenix Metro area, Damien attended school primarily in the East Valley, where he blossomed into the kind and compassionate soul we cherished.

Damien was a devoted fiancé to Brandy Ricker and a proud father to his cherished daughter, Astraea Ricker-Rose, and his unborn son, Hades Jay Rose. His family meant everything to him, and he took immense joy in being a part of their lives.

He is survived by his loving mother, Olivia Stockham, and stepfather, Shawn Stockham, as well as his father, Weslie Rose. Damien was blessed to have siblings who adored him—his brother Phoenix, and sisters Alyssa Amundson, and Charlie Stockham. He shared a special bond with his brother-in-law, Erik Amundson, and the family is grateful for the sweet moments he shared, especially with his beloved niece, Lilly Amundson, who will carry his memory forward.

Damien’s vibrant spirit and warmth touched the lives of all who knew him. He possessed an infectious smile and a heart full of kindness, always ready to lend a helping hand or share a laugh with those fortunate enough to be in his presence. His passion for life extended into every community he stepped into, making friends, and bringing joy without reservation.

Damien was not a man of many hobbies, yet those he pursued held great significance in his heart. He took immense pride in his extensive collection of knives and swords, each piece telling a story of craftsmanship and history that captivated his imagination. However, it was his passion for creating and composing music that allowed him to express his emotions and connect with others profoundly. A true lover of animals, Damien’s gentleness extended to all creatures great and small, and his enduring bond with his pets was a testament to his nurturing spirit.

Born with an innate ability to connect with others, DJ approached life with a unique mission: to uplift spirits and spread positivity, ensuring that every gathering brimmed with fun and good vibes. His infectious smile and hilarious sense of humor had the remarkable ability to transform even the dullest moments into lasting memories. DJ tackled challenges not only with strength but also with a generosity that set him apart. It was not uncommon for him to offer help or share his last dollar with those in need, illustrating his profound empathy and profound commitment to others.

DJ bravely battled his own darkness, facing struggles that at times seemed insurmountable. Despite these challenges, he remained a beacon of light, offering unwavering love to his family and friends, often putting their needs above his own. His gentle spirit touched everyone who was fortunate enough to know him, as he shared smiles and warmth wherever he went.

He is cherished in the memories of his family, for whom he was a rock and an inspiration—a devoted son whose kindness and love never waned. As a new father, he embraced the joys and responsibilities of parenthood with an enthusiasm that lit up his world. His sweet interaction with his little one will forever be imprinted in our hearts—a reminder of the love and joy he brought to this family.

Although his life carries an undeniable weight of sorrow, let us remember the joy DJ spread, the laughter we shared, and the hope he infused into our lives. He grappled with shadows but prevailed in kindness, and his legacy will undoubtedly echo through the joys he left behind.

Though his time with us was far too brief, the legacy of love and determination he leaves behind will forever resonate in the hearts of his family and friends. In honoring Damien’s memory, let us all strive to live life with the same eagerness, kindness, and spirit of adventure that he embraced every day.

As we bid farewell to DJ, we take comfort in knowing that he now finds tranquility—a peace that eluded him in life. He will always be remembered, loved, and missed beyond measure.

Nancy Maria (Merrill) Davis, 57, of Mesa, Arizona, passed away Tuesday, December 24, 2024.

Nancy was born January 17, 1967, in Mesa, Arizona, to William and Dorothy (Felix) Merrill Sr.

Nancy graduated from Mesa High School in 1985. She married Dale Davis in 1988. After Dale joined the military, they moved to Georgia and later to Germany. They moved back to Mesa in 1990 to raise their children close to family.

Nancy enjoyed camping trips with her husband, young children, and friends. In later years, she also looked forward to visiting loved ones in different states with her husband and children. During retirement, Nancy enjoyed time with her husband and making memories at their cabin in Heber, Arizona.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, William and Dorothy (Felix) Merrill Sr, and one brother, William Merrill Jr.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Dale, and her children, Elena and Thomas. She is also survived by her sister, Sue (Mike) Banks, and two brothers, Todd (Debbie) Merrill and David Wells. She has many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-great-nephews.

Nancy will be laid to rest at Mountain View Cemetery, 7900 E Main St, Mesa, AZ 85207, on Friday, January 17, 2025, at 11 am.

Robin Dean Hargrave, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 67, surrounded by his family, in Chandler, Arizona, on January 5, 2025.

Robin was born on August 20, 1957, in Phoenix, Arizona, to Donald Winsor Hargrave and Dorsey Gardner Hargrave. He was the youngest of three children.

Robin spent his early years in Phoenix, where he developed a love for music and performing. While participating in the Phoenix Boys Choir, his talent and enthusiasm for music really began to shine. In 1971, the family moved to Lehi, Arizona, where Robin attended Kino Junior High and Westwood High School. There, he excelled in wrestling, football, and honor choir, and earned a place in the Regional and All-State Festival choirs. He also took part in several school productions, often securing lead roles that showcased his fun personality and natural ability to entertain audiences. Throughout his life, he shared his musical talents as a guitarist and vocalist in many bands, making lifelong friends.

Robin served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Maine and Nova Scotia, where his warmth and ability to connect with people touched many lives. On November 20, 1982, he married Lisa Horne in the Mesa Arizona Temple, and they were blessed with five children. In 1987, the couple and their young family served an 18-month mission in the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation.

Robin was an avid outdoorsman and skilled hunter, working toward achieving the North American Grand Slam. He had successfully harvested the Desert Bighorn and the Rocky Mountain Bighorn and had plans to complete the remaining two. In his later years, Robin also developed a passion for long-distance precision shooting. His love for nature drew him and Lisa to Taylor, Arizona, where they created a small farm. He found great joy in growing blackberries and strawberries, as well as beautifying their property, turning it into a peaceful retreat for their family and dear friends to enjoy.

Robin worked for more than 40 years in the construction services industry, where he was known for his dedication and attention to detail. He never lost his love or talent for music, and his family cherishes the many songs he wrote over the years.

Robin is survived by his wife, Lisa, their five children: Clete (Kristin), Kyle (Lisa), Adam (Brittany), Heather Cuthbertson (Will), and Hunter (Abbie); as well as 13 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister LaDawn Huling (Rex), brother Dan (Storm), and stepmother Nilus.

A viewing will be held on Friday, January 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bunkers Funeral Home, located at 3529 E. University Drive in Mesa. Services will be held on Saturday, January 18, at 10 a.m., at the Latter-day Saint church building located at 925 N. Ronald Dean Midkiff passed away, peacefully, with family by his side, on January 8, 2024. He was 83 years old.

Ron was born to Joe Clinton Midkiff and Eula Adele Perdue on August 2, 1941, in Bragg City, Missouri, he grew up on a cotton farm with his brothers Donald and Eugene. (predeceased).

In 1957 they moved to Phoenix, Az where he met the love of his life, Judy Kay Shreckengost. They were married on September 10, 1965. During their 46 glorious years of marriage, they raised two wonderful daughters: Heather and Aimee.

Ron attended ASU and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He held a draftsman position with the Arizona Department of Transportation and continued to pursue his career goals with ADOT for 29 years, retiring as the Arizona State Traffic Engineer.

Ron and Judy built their dream home, in Prescott, Arizona where they enjoyed the remainder of their 46 glorious years of marriage together. In 2011, Judy passed away. Ron moved to Mesa, Az in 2017 where he kept the memory of his beautiful and loving wife alive by sharing stories, love, laughter and his wisdom with his daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Ron will always be remembered with love and admiration by his family: Heather and (Larry) Watts, Aimee Midkiff (Vernon) Pearsall; his grandkids Jessie (Kevin) McDonald, Luke (Matea) Alexander, Kay-Leigh Midkiff, Kourtney Pearsall; his 7 great-grandkids and many others whose hearts he touched.

As Ron said in the last line of a heartfelt letter, “To quote an old country song ‘So long it’s been good to know you…..but I’ve got to be moving along.”

What does it mean to have a big heart? Is it the actual size of one’s heart or is it the expression of acceptance, kindness, and love? Large in stature, Justin David Ellsworth had both a big heart and was lovingly big-hearted. Justin passed away at home in Mesa, Arizona on January 5, 2025. He will be remembered for his quiet acts of service, friendship, acceptance, and loyalty which he freely gave his friends and family.

Justin was born February 11, 1997 in Mesa, Arizona to David (Sonya) Ellsworth and Rosalyn (Samuel) Francis. Justin, the fourth child of seven, was the quintessential middle child with a special relationship to each of his siblings. Justin is survived by sisters Susan, Anna, and Lindsay; and brothers Nathan and Eric. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ryan.

Naturally musical, Justin sang constantly from the time he could talk. His teen years brought a booming voice and vibrant stage presence he enjoyed in both choral and show choir settings. Justin also enjoyed the great outdoors: camping, hiking, skiing, and especially swimming. From the time he was a little child, Justin loved being in water—the first one in and last one out, no matter how cold. An Eagle Scout, Justin was nicknamed “the Polar Bear” by his scout leaders.

Justin loved the comradery of friendships and brotherhood. Optimistic, fun-loving, and witty, he brought a big smile and energy to every gathering. While in a crowd Justin’s quiet demeanor sometimes deceptively muted his sparkling personality, in small groups Justin radiated joy, kept everyone in stitches, or sought out the one who needed a friend. Justin leaves a legacy of kindness. He will be sorely missed by his myriad of friends, his gaming community, work associates, and his many aunts, uncles, cousins and step-siblings.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 17th, 2025 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1249 S 48th St. Mesa, AZ 85206 at 10:00 am with a visitation from 9:00 – 9:45 am.

Bueanna (Ann) Powell Jensen, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2024, in Vernal, Utah, at the age of 82. She was born on February 1, 1942, in Pima, Arizona, to Albert Gobel Powell and Merle Shelton Powell.

Ann is survived by her two brothers, Carrol and Charles Powell (Lehi, AZ); her three children, Troy & Deanna Hineman (Vernal, UT), Shawn Becker & Ken Skyberg (Rapid City, SD), and Corey Hineman (Wilson, WY); her six grandchildren, Christy & Jayk Chivers, Jesse Hineman, Keith & Sienna Hineman (all of Vernal, UT), and Clayton Becker, Alex Becker, and Travis Becker (all of Mesa, AZ); as well as her 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Leroy Powell; her sister, Violet Anderson; and her three husbands, Derral George Hineman, Ron Jensen, and Harold Trautman.

Ann graduated high school in 1960, and soon after, she married Derral Hineman, with whom she had three children. Following their divorce, Ann married Ron Jensen, and later, after his passing, she married Harold Trautman, who preceded her in death in 2018. Throughout her life, Ann was a loving mother and devoted grandmother, her family always being her greatest joy.

Ann had a deep love for travel, particularly road trips. She cherished the time spent driving her motorhome to Mexico or camping in the mountains. She was an avid fan of country western music and dancing, and could always keep up with the best of them. Though she often claimed she wasn’t very good, Ann enjoyed playing card games and dominos with her family.

For the last seven months of her life, Ann lived at Landmark Assisted Living in Vernal, where she made new friends and was surrounded by the love of her family. Though she had found a new place to call home, Ann always considered Arizona her true home. As she passed, it is with comfort that we can say she is now home again, having enjoyed one final long road trip to reunite with her loved ones in peace.

Ann’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew her, and she will be dearly missed by all.

Alan Bruce Hayes passed away at his home in Garland, Texas, on January 3, 2025.   There are no words that will do justice to Alan, but we, as a family, are going to try to share a little about his life and accomplishments.

Alan was born in Phoenix Arizona on March 9, 1970.  When he was just 3 days old, he joined the Max and Leona Hayes family and was officially adopted by them.  He grew up in the Mesa and Gilbert Arizona area and has many relatives and friends there as well as in other places he has lived.  Later in his adult life, he moved to Garland, Texas, where he purchased a home and lived for many years. His occupation was a remodeling and restoration contractor. One of his great loves was to work in salvaging, repairing and transporting boats and other watercraft.

He is survived by his mother, Leona, and stepfather, Lyn Kimball; daughter, Aston; and many nieces and nephews.  Surviving siblings include: Sheri (Thomas) Russon, Linda (Ray) Pomper, Jolaine (Bruce) Chatham, Karen (Max) Johnston, Eileen Hayes, Royd (Nicole) Hayes, as well as Michael (Melissa) Shreve and Sue Ellen (Chris) Angle, children of Sam and Alene Shreve. His nieces and nephews loved to be part of his life and enjoyed his unique personality.

His father, Max A. Hayes, passed away when Alan was 3 years of age after which Alan developed a very close bond of nearly 40 years with his stepfather, Sam Shreve, who preceded him in death.  Lyn Kimball, his surviving stepfather, has a tender spot in his heart for Alan and has enjoyed providing continual fatherly care and support.

Alan graduated from Gilbert High School and was known for his outgoing personality.  He excelled in many different sports and enjoyed being active throughout his life.  Some of the experiences that family will remember include the many repairs that had to be made to the yellow car driven by Alan due to his rambunctious habit of driving over non-existent country, mountain and desert roads in Arizona. Friends will also remember him by his pranks and jovial nature and his entertaining way of sharing his life experiences.  Family will remember him by his care and love for each family member along with the unique Christmas gifts they would receive from him.  His church friends will remember him for always being willing to volunteer to help others.  They will also remember him as the life of the party at some of their outings.  All that knew him enjoyed his fun personality and spending time together.

Graveside services will be held Friday January 17, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at the City of Mesa Cemetery located at 1212 North Center Street. Arrangements are being handled by Bunker Mortuary, 33 N. Centennial Way, Mesa, AZ 85201.

Arthur P Ricarte died in the early morning hours of January 1st, 2025, at his home, Sandridge Post Acute, in Mesa Arizona. Arthur received the best, top-notch care there at Sandridge. He considered the staff there his family.

Arthur is preceded in death by his father Jose P. Ricarte.  Arthur was the loving son of Irene and Jose Ricarte; the loving brother of Rose Todd and Joseph Ricarte; and the proud uncle of David M. Todd.

Arthur loved going to the movies and playing video games. He loved old school music.  Arthur will be deeply missed by his family that loved him so much.

LaRene Jensen Call was born on June 27, 1940, in Ogden, Utah to James Leo Jensen and Orlie Bird Jensen. LaRene was the second oldest child in her family. She was the younger sister of Verl, and older sister to Cherie, DeLoy, and Kent.

LaRene grew up in difficult circumstances: poverty, food insecurity, and some brutal discipline. But if you were ever to ask her about her childhood, she would most often talk of her love for both her parents and all of her siblings. Throughout her life, when she was in any room with her siblings, there would be laughter. They all shared a unique, irresistible sense of humor. Some of LaRene’s fondest childhood memories were of visits to her grandparents’ home in Mendon, Utah where she picked raspberries and carrots from the backyard and ate fresh baked apple pies in the kitchen. She felt safe and warm there.

LaRene was an amazing seamstress. She used to go to fancy department stores, take a look at what was on the rack, and then go home and replicate it at her sewing machine. She shared clothes with her sister, and they would adjust the hems depending on which one of them had a date that night. Later in life, she sewed replicas of designer Jordache jeans for her daughter Julie in the 1980’s, as well as amazing school dance ball gowns fit for a queen, designed from a mixture of dozens of patterns and handmade sketches.

LaRene was an exceptionally bright, hardworking student from a young age. She excelled at her studies all through life. In her later years, whenever a child or grandchild got good grades or an educational award of some kind, she would proudly say, “They get it from me.” LaRene graduated from Ogden High School in 1958, then went on to graduate with an Associate of Science degree from Weber College in 1961, and a Bachelor of Science degree from Utah State University in 1964.

LaRene started working as soon as she could and had a variety of jobs throughout her life. Her first job was at Skyline Frost Top in Ogden when she was a teenager. She worked at a shoe store, a furniture store, as a secretary at Thiokol, and as a staffer for U.S.
Representative Lawrence Burton. After graduating from college, she taught first
and fifth grade classes at an elementary school. LaRene married Wynn Call on June 8,1964. They moved to Mesa, Arizona for Wynn’s work in the LDS Church Educational System and his studies at Arizona State University. They had five children: Julie, Ron, James (a stillborn baby), Cherie, and David. LaRene was a devoted, loving mother who gave her whole life and her whole heart to her children. They all knew she was their greatest advocate and biggest fan. At all the football games, basketball games, gymnastic meets, swimming meets, and school musicals, her children all knew they could excel, simply because she believed in them so deeply and lovingly. It was plain to see that they were the greatest treasures in her life. LaRene spoiled her grandchildren, who all loved her as a beloved grandmother and a cherished friend.

LaRene was a stay-at-home mother for most of the time her children were young, but she found creative ways to keep working. She was the most popular home pre-school teacher in town for a long time. She eventually discontinued the pre-school but continued to be a highly recommended tutor for decades. She was a gifted teacher and could teach absolutely anyone to read. For a few years she also ran her own business called Tidy Team, cleaning model homes as an independent contractor for Cardon Homes, where Wynn was an executive. All of the children learned how to vacuum in perfectly straight rows and clean windows till they looked completely transparent. (Not all of them went on to apply these skills in their home lives…)

LaRene and Wynn divorced in 1991 after 27 years of marriage. LaRene struggled to find work after so many years outside of the traditional workforce, so she went back to school and got a master’s degree in Adult Education from the University of Phoenix. She bought two of the earliest gigantic brick-shaped cell phones to keep in contact with Cherie and David who were still living at home while she went back to school and worked long hours. While in school, she developed her own groundbreaking curriculum which she used at a job teaching assembly line workers at Motorola how to read and do math, succeeding at what every previous teacher had failed to do for them. She changed their lives and worked herself out of a job there. After some other jobs teaching reading and GED courses at community colleges, LaRene eventually worked as a teacher and secretary at three different charter schools in Mesa, until she retired.

LaRene was never wealthy, but she freely gave what she had and served all those whom she saw in need. She often felt uncomfortable accepting charity of any kind, and she had a lot of pride in being independent, but she was always the first to volunteer to make a hot meal for a neighbor. Her friends cherished her and valued her excellent advice and her kind listening ear.

LaRene loved going to the movies. It didn’t matter what was playing; she loved to see the latest shows. She also loved going out to lunch or dinner with her grandchildren or her good friends. Her favorite restaurant was Red Lobster. Her favorite food was probably potatoes of any kind, especially mashed potatoes. Original Lays potato chips could always be found in her home. She also always loved an ice-cold Coca-Cola.

LaRene was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints throughout her life. She was the most dedicated visiting teacher and ministering sister. She loved using her gifts as an educator to teach young women’s classes, gospel doctrine Sunday school classes, and Relief Society. She was ever an example of Christlike love and service. Her children learned the most about Jesus by observing the way she loved and served all those around her.

In 2013 LaRene endured breast cancer and after extensive treatments, she was fortunately able to go into remission and live a while longer. All who have known LaRene have treasured the extra time we have had her in our lives.
When LaRene’s oldest daughter Julie was diagnosed with kidney cancer, LaRene spent months by Julie’s side at her home in Plano, Texas. LaRene was heartbroken when Julie passed away in October of 2022.

In October of 2024, LaRene was diagnosed with colon cancer. After a brief struggle, LaRene passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 5, 2025. She is survived by her brother, Verl Jensen; her children Ron (Debbie) Call, Cherie (Joe) Anderson, David (Kristy) Call; her son-in-law Curt Shill; her grandchildren Ryan (Melissalyn) Shill, Christie Shill, Jeffrey, Jeremy, and Jacob Call, Sydney, Madeline, Howard, and Audrey Anderson, Nixon and Canon Call; and her great-grandchildren Oliver and Aurora Shill. She is preceded in death by her parents; her siblings Cherie Painter, DeLoy Jensen, and Kent Jensen; her baby son James; and her daughter Julie Shill. She will be missed so dearly, but will no doubt enjoy peace, rest, and a joyful reunion with all those who have waited for her on the other side. The memory of LaRene will bless us forever.

Funeral Services are at the LDS church building at 422 E. University Dr., Mesa AZ, on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 10am. The services are preceded by a visitation at 9am at the same location.

Frank Altobello, 71 of Tempe Arizona passed away suddenly on December 13th, 2024. Frank is survived by his loving wife, Kathy, of 50 years; his two daughters that he was so, very proud of; Annette Arevalo (Mike) and Janelle Giannonatti (Tyler). Forever cherished and remembered by granddaughter Shaelyn. Frank was predeceased by his parents; Giovanni and Antonia Altobello.

Frank was very loved and will be deeply missed by many family members and friends.
