Arden Allen Rowley, age 89, touched the lives of thousands as a father, brother, soldier, teacher, veteran, and grandfather. He was born 9 June 1930 in Phoenix, Arizona, the third child of Edwin Jesse Rowley and Rosilla Allen. He passed away peacefully in the sunroom of his beloved home of 56 years on 14 June 2019 (all who knew Dad will understand the significance of his passing on Flag Day).
Arden’s family moved back to Mesa soon after he was born, where he resided the rest of his life. He graduated from Mesa Union High School in 1948, and soon after enlisted in the US Army. Arden’s unit was sent to Korea when war broke out there, and he was taken prisoner 30 November 1950, spending 33 months in several Communist Chinese prison camps. His time as a POW was perhaps the second-most defining experience of his life. The first-most began eleven days after his return to Mesa when he met Ruth Martin, and they married two months later on 25 November 1953. They celebrated 57 loving years together, criss-crossing this country they so loved, attending family and military reunions, visiting religious and national historic sites, and doing family history research, before Ruth’s untimely death from cancer in 2011.
Arden was preceded in passing by both parents, his sisters Lois Shepherd, Elaine Baker, and Joanne Adair, his brother Duane Rowley, and his beloved daughter Kristi Rowley Sherwood. Arden is survived by his youngest brother Lynn Tenney, his sons Steven Arden Rowley, Bradley Martin Rowley, and Scott Allen Rowley, and by 18 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
Arden was active in several veterans’ organizations, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the 2nd Engineer Combat Battalion Association, the Korean War Veterans Association, and the Korean War ExPOW Association, and was inducted into the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame in 2004. He published five books about the Korean War, including his autobiographical Korea-POW: A Thousand Days With Life On Hold. He made eight return trips to Korea from 1994 through 2017. Nearly all the furniture in Arden and Ruth’s much-loved home was built in his legendary workshop, and he enjoyed serving in many and varied callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He also retired from teaching 31 years in the Mesa Public Schools in 1989.
Minutes after Dad’s passing, his family lowered to half-mast the American flag which has flown over his front yard veterans’ memorial for many years; it will remain so for the duration.
Arden will be laid to rest with full military honors in Mesa Cemetery on Saturday, 22 June after a 10:00 am farewell service at the LDS Solomon chapel, located at 977 E. Broadway in Mesa. Visitation will be the evening of Friday, 21 June, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Bunker’s Garden Chapel at 33 N. Centennial Way in Mesa, and the day of the service from 9:00 to 9:30 am, at the Solomon building.
Any veterans and active duty personnel can join his honor guard in pausing at 12:00 noon Mountain Standard Time and offering a silent salute.
It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived (George S. Patton).

Claire A Scholar (nee McCarthy), age 79, passed away on June 13, 2019 in Mesa, AZ.
She grew up in the quaint village of Rockdale, IL and was given the nickname of Botsie for her fun loving and energetic personality. She spent years playing basketball, often under the coaching of her dad, Leo. Her sister Janet will attest that Claire walked into Joliet Township High School a tomboy and walked out a lady who became quite the fashionista and an amazing dancer. In 1965 she married Norman Scholar and together were the original owners of the famous The Keg restaurant in downtown Joliet. She touched the lives of many employees and patrons during the 30-year run of the successful establishment. Her panache for Christmas decorating will forever be remembered with snowflakes floating and lights and trees everywhere! A visit to The Keg over the holidays was a treat just for that and she shared the magic with her neighbors when she retired in Arizona in 1995. Before retiring, she and Norman loved to travel and had a fondness for Palm Springs as well as Arizona, where their daughter Sheree attended college and then called home. After Norman’s passing in 1996, she became the den mother and pet sitter to everyone living in the courtyard area of her condo. Such good times ensued! In 2000, she became a grandma to Britton who originally called her “mug-a.” It became her preference and her grandma name was coined. Ten years after being widowed, she met Ed who spent 13 wonderful years with her. When she took ill in 2012, he cared for her unconditionally. Claire enjoyed spending time with friends and her family. Sheree, Britton, Tom, Ed, her sister Janet, and her brother-in-law Brian were by her side when she left this world.
Claire is survived by her daughter, Sheree (Thomas) Scholar, grandson Britton Scholar, sister Janet (Brian) Morrissey, sister-in-law Bea Scholar, and partner Ed McLaughlin. Preceded in death by her husband Norman Scholar, mother Rose McCarthy (nee Sleyko), father Leo McCarthy, mother-in-law Sophie Scholar Kibort (nee Latinsky) and brother-in-laws Sydney and Sam (Margie) Scholar.
Because Claire loved a good party, three will be thrown in her honor.

- A celebration of life party in Joliet is being planned for early August. Please contact Sheree or email CelebrateClaire@GeekGirl42.com if you are interested in attending. Kindly include how you knew Claire.

Margaret Mortenson Childs passed away peacefully in her sleep, at her home, on Sunday June 9th., one day before her 87th. Birthday.
Margaret was born in Douglas Arizona on June 10, 1932, the 8th. child of Nellie Kerby and Andrew Mortenson. Margaret grew up outside of Douglas until the age of 14 when she and her family moved to Pomona, California. When she was younger, she played the violin as well as tap danced. In California, she was active in school, and was always very smart, earning high grades throughout school. She was a pom pom girl, and going to the beach with friends was her favorite past time activity. She would often play the ukulele with her friends at school, getting groups together to sing and play the uke also.
After graduating from Pomona High School, Margaret worked for the phone company, and then at Kelly Marmalade Factory as a receptionist where she met her husband Bob. She loved the outdoors, going on long Sunday drives, gardening (no one had a better green thumb than her), and traveling (although she never got to do a lot of that). She continued to play the ukulele from her high school years, but played to her kids, family, and friends, and was totally self taught. She also played the organ, and was self taught on that as well. Her home was always beautiful and she had an amazing knack for decorating. She was an amazing cook, although she would tell you that she really didn’t like to cook. She was a very classy lady, and although very humble and shy, she was always the ultimate hostess – waiting on everyone else. Everyone always talked about how sweet and kind Margaret was and how special she made them feel.
Margaret and Bob were always very patriotic and both loved their country very much.
