Renae Roskelley Schiess, age 81, passed away peacefully during her afternoon nap on August 27, 2019. She had suffered with Lewy Body dementia for a number of years, which had stolen her smile and her ability to communicate.

Renae was born in Preston, Idaho on January 7, 1938 at her grandmother’s house. She was the second of three children born to Arthur F. and Wanda Peterson Roskelley. She grew up in Logan, Utah.

She attended Logan High School for three years. On the first day of what would be her senior year, she eloped with Dean Schiess to Las Vegas. This week marks their 64th wedding anniversary. They moved to Star Valley, WY where Dean owned a gas station.

In 1957, Renae and Dean moved to Phoenix Arizona. They bought their first of several Dairy Queen stores and worked hard, day and night to make it a success. Soon they moved to Scottsdale, and finally lived for 25 years in Paradise Valley. Renae loved to collect recipes and was an excellent cook. She loved working at the Dairy Queen and later, the Orange Julius store in Tower Plaza. She and Dean travelled all over the world, and had a good life together, though she was no stranger to tragedy. She was elegant, beautiful, and devoted to her family.

Renae is survived by her husband, Dean, sister Arlene McDonald, children: Kelli (Scott) Holman of Maryville, MO, Brody (Mary) Schiess of El Segundo CA, and Darin (Brigette) Schiess of Scottsdale, AZ. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sons: Brandon Dean Schiess and Dean Schiess Jr., and her brother Conrad Roskelley.

A private memorial service will be held for the family. Renae will be buried in Logan, Utah, next to her infant son.  In lieu of flowers, we suggest a donation to the Lewy Body Dementia Association at LBDA.org

John Christopher Heindel
12/28/1953 - 08/23/2019

John Christopher Heindel left us suddenly and unexpectedly on 08/23/19 after 65 eventful years on this earth. His life was filled with experiences and adventures that could literally fill a book (Johnny’s Boys [paperback 2014]) – or two.

Although he is internationally renown for his creation of the MGM Grand Lion, his greatest creations are his three offspring: Joseph Heindel, Rosie Heindel-Howsden, and Sierra Rayne Heindel.

Included in his various escapades he spent time with his daughter-in-law Beth and his granddaughters Francesca and Calista; however, he had yet to meet his new son-in-law Andrew.

We plan to come together to share stories and celebrate JohnnyLee’s life on Friday 08/30 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Superstition Mountain Lost Dutchman Museum Elvis Presley Memorial Chapel at 4087 N. Apache Trail, AJ, AZ 85119 Elvis Presley Memorial Chapel.  A fitting location for the steampunk desert pirate that he is – at the base of the majestic mountain.

At 12:30pm, we will be at Mountain View Cemetery 7900 E. Main St., Mesa, AZ 85207 Mountain View Funeral Home And Cemetery, LLC to say our final adios to our larger than life, story-telling dreamer.

As he was always one to recognize, every little bit helps…

Christy Lee Myers Smith
04/30/1975 - 08/14/2019

Christy Myers Smith, a loving wife, dedicated mother, and selfless friend, passed away unexpectedly on August 14, 2019 at the age of 44.

Christy was born on April 30, 1975 in Phoenix, Arizona to Ed and Karen Myers. She was the oldest of five siblings. She is survived by her husband, Brent, and her two children Jason and Hailey as well as by her mother, Karen, her brothers, Jimmy (Marcela), Clayton (Valerie), and Scott (Jennie), and her sister Bonnie Giles (Jason). Preceding her in death was her father, Ed, and Grandfather, Clayton, with whom she had an exceptional bond.

Christy Myers met Brent Smith, at an ASU singles dance the summer of 1993. They dated for 4 years and were ultimately sealed in the Mesa Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on June 14, 1997.  They were blessed with two remarkable children, Jason and Hailey, who quickly became their best friends. She was fiercely devoted to helping them become their best selves and was their greatest advocate. She helped them focus on the teachings of Jesus Christ, and emphasized charity, service, and work, all of which she authentically exemplified herself.

Christy adored her family and genuinely cherished her time with them. They enjoyed any day on the lake, riding motorcycles and ATVs, hunting, and spending time at home. She also had a passion for gardening and gourmet cooking. She, however, found her real joy at their cabin. It became her quiet retreat from her busy life in the city. She was never happier than when she was working at the cabin, creating her heaven on earth.

Christy was no stranger to excellence. After graduating Cum Laude from Arizona State University with a Bachelor’s Degree of Arts in Political Science, Christy, once again, graduated Cum Laude with a law degree from the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University.

Christy was an equally talented and capable attorney. Her professional pursuits took her from an associate at a large, international law firm, to General Counsel for the Office of Governor Jan Brewer, to Vice President and COO of various corporations in advertising, real estate development, and retail.

Christy was a mentor and a leader. Despite the high demands of her professional life, Christy still found time and opportunities to be a mentor. It was not uncommon to find Christy at lunch advising an aspiring student or attorney on how to set goals and position themselves for success. While emails and requests of her time were building throughout the day, Christy would often stay up through the midnight hours for a neighbor or friend. As daunting as the tasks might have appeared, she never hesitated to help.

Christy loved to serve. For 3 years, Christy and Brent worked tirelessly together as Area Coordinators for the Pathway Program for Brigham Young University-Idaho. They advised and motivated youth and adults in their pursuit of a college education.

Funeral services will be on Friday, August 23, 2019 at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 4225 N. 56th Street Phoenix, Arizona 85018.

Betty Anne Harshman
05/21/1937 - 08/13/2019

Betty Anne Harshman ~ family matriarch, sister, mother, friend, grandmother, great grandmother ~ passed away peacefully at Reflections at Fellowship Square in Mesa, AZ on Tuesday, August 13 at the age of 82.

Betty Anne was born on May 21, 1937 in Tiffin, OH. She moved at a young age from Ohio  to Laveen, Az. Her family later moved from their orange orchard in Laveen to live in a bustling new home development on 28th Street and McDowell in Phoenix. She was called “Breezy” by her big brother Rony Harshman. Her love of adventure has its roots in the motorcycle and camping trips her family took during her childhood. She always loved camping and would continue that tradition with her own family for the rest of her life. She did not mind the upgrade to RV camping in her later years.

Betty is remembered for her determined nature, her love for her family, and the thrill of adventures and travel, whether that was a trip to the local Goodwill, visiting with her children and grandchildren, or exploring a new country. She was pretty fed up with her memory loss and she attempted to bust out of Reflections a few times and go find it!

Betty Anne was a cheerleader at North High in Phoenix. After a long break in her education, she graduated from ASU in 1988 with a degree in Communications at the age of 51!  Her love of learning continued throughout her life until her memory loss took over.

Betty Anne had a number of jobs throughout her life. She worked as a carhop at the first AZ Bob’s Big Boy on Central Avenue and Thomas in the 1950’s, as a clerk at Tang’s Imports, an executive recruiter, a co-owner in her husband’s concrete business, a massage therapist, an art framer, and her favorite occupation (we swear!), a homemaker. Our mother lived for house cleaning, laundry folding, cooking, and ironing, with some tennis or painting lessons on the side.

You might remember her ready smile, eating her delicious tamales at Christmas, talking with her at any one of our club or sporting events, or just being in our comfortable and lovely home enjoying a snack with one of us kids. She had such an eye for art and design and she followed her passions — sewing, painting, cooking, tennis, learning, quilting, or whatever brought her pleasure.

Betty Anne will be so missed by her family — brother Rony (Norma) Harshman, children Leslie (Johnny) Johnson, Cydney (Jay) Vargo, Arturo (Ashley) Garcia, and Lydia (Danny) Crain. She also leaves behind eleven grandchildren, Janice, Mark, Katherine,Wil, Blake, Danielle, Aura, Bella, Artie, Trevor, Danielle and 8 great-grandchildren, as well as her niece Kathy (Scott) Austin and nephew Johnny (Janet) Harshman.

If you’d like to do something to remember Betty Anne, you could make a donation of goods to Goodwill or your favorite thrift store (oh man, she LOVED thrift stores); make a donation to an Alzheimer’s organization that provides research or support to families; or you could just think happy thoughts.

We will celebrate our mother’s life with an open house at 3105 E Coconino Dr Gilbert, AZ 85298 on Saturday, August 24 from 11am – 3pm.

Paul Russell Patmore
06/21/1980 - 08/03/2019

Paul Russell Patmore was born unexpectedly 3 months early on June 21, 1980 in Dallas, TX.  And he died unexpectedly at his home in Mesa, AZ from a heroin overdose on August 3, 2019.  He fought so hard to survive in the NICU.  He must have survived with the mission someday to reach out to others who also suffered from the disease of addiction.  He saved many.  He inspired more. His friends have confirmed this. He was whip smart, wise beyond his short years, and the funniest human on the planet – and beyond??

From friends and family:

“The thing about Paulie, is he always fought for the underdog, because he was the underdog. He was the one person in the room whose attention and energy automatically went to the one person in the room that most people would have given up on. Because he always believed that everybody was worthy of love and connection and could make a comeback. Because Paulie always made a comeback. Again and again and again. In his world, nobody was disposable or insignificant. In his world everyone deserved some time and attention. In his world every person mattered. No matter what. And no matter where he went or what he did he always maintained his childlike awe, sage wisdom and ability to make the person standing in front of him feel like the most special person in the world. You could never be sad around Paulie because he could always help you find your smile and your gratitude. He had a light and a force within him that inspired and motivated people around him. Even when it couldn’t inspire and motivate him. He was one of the wittiest people I’ve ever known with the most dynamic mind and lens through which he saw the world. He was absolutely magnetic and had the most contagious laughter and smile. He had the biggest heart of anyone I know, and he shared it with everyone. Paulie was my friend. My family.  Some times weren’t always easy or beautiful, but they are beyond precious and priceless to me and I will cherish them for the rest of my life. There has never been, and will never be, someone as True Blue as our Paulie. Wherever you are my friend know that I love you. Forever. ♥️”

“I’ve never felt more important than when I was around Paul.  And I think that is true for most people who knew him.   Because the depth of his care and concern was stunning.  Paul had “it”.  It’s rare, and he had it.  I’ll miss it forever.  He had a genuine selflessness that was learned from family, but that was cultivated through his own life experience.”

Paul proclaimed recently, “This is the happiest I’ve ever been in my adult life!”  He was almost one year clean, had a job he loved helping others, was taking such good care of his health and relationships.  His future looked so bright.  Yet one poor decision ended it all.

Paul was a gentle and loving child, and that never changed.  He had an old soul – and loved senior citizens, as well as children and animals.  Everyone was drawn to him.  He will be missed by hundreds of friends in Arizona, as well as his family in Texas and Pennsylvania.

Paul was predeceased by his father, Charles W. Patmore, Jr., his grandparents Paul and Fran Hanson and Charles and June Patmore.  He is survived by his son, Isaac Deerwester of Philadelphia, Pa./Drexel University; his mother, Joan Hanson Patmore of Dallas, TX, his brothers Chuck Patmore of McKinney, TX and Doug Patmore of Fort Collins, Co; and his brother from another mother, Scotty Cowen of Phoenix.

The poem “Ascension” by Colleen Hitchcock was on his refrigerator door for the past 2 years.  Please look it up; we believe that he was at peace with his destiny.

We were all stunned by his death.  Paul always came back.   Yet an addict’s death should never be unexpected.

A celebration of Paul’s life will be held in Phoenix at Unexpected Art Gallery (ironic, to be sure) on Sunday, August 25, 2019.  We celebrate the artist, writer, philosopher and friend to the least of us.  A private inurnment will take place at the columbarium at First United Methodist Church, Richardson TX.

To support Paul’s legacy of restoring dignity and health to others with the disease of addiction, donations can be made to Sonoran Prevention Works.  3201 N. 16th St., Ste.9, Phoenix, AZ 85016, spwaz.org.

At 69 years old, Linda has lost her hard fought battle with cancer. Her life, memory and legacy is survived by her loving husband, Bob, her son, Blu, her daughter, Kathy and her three grandchildren, Taylor, Dylan and Parker (PJ). Linda has been an inspiration to everyone that knew her. Her love of nature, birds and all living things gave everyone around her a sense of peace and happiness. She was the most giving person and went out of her way to please her family and friends any chance she had. Linda was born in a small town in Illinois and after living in San Diego, Mammoth California and Boise, Idaho, she made her way to Arizona where she lived for the last 41 years, 36 of which were in Mesa, AZ. She loved golf and played in college years ago. She eventually became a PGA Professional and was among a small elite list of women that passed the actual PGA test. Finally, 12 years ago she married the love of her life, Bob Gray. She called him “Hunsie” and then the love story had begun. Linda and Bob had what everyone dreams of in a relationship, true unconditional love. They were inseparable and complimented each other in every single way. They both lit up any room when they were with each other and everyone felt it. There will be many heavy hearts as we say goodbye to an amazing Wife, Daughter, Mother and Grandmother. Her smile and laughter will carry on in the lives of everyone who knew her. Let her rest peacefully in Heaven with her mother, father, brother, Sammy and all her friends that passed before her. We now have a loving angel watching over us and reminding us of how beautiful life truly is.

Brenda Laufer is also a treasured family friend. Those waiting to greet Mom in heaven include her husband, George; son, Ross; mother, Mimi; brother, Reilly, and many other family members and friends.

Mom was born in Sheridan, Wyoming and she was sassy, tough-as-they-come, and intensely private. Mom devoted herself to her family and she loved going to the casino with Dad. When Dad passed on, Margi and Tom would take her to Casino Arizona and she was one of the luckiest people to ever touch a quarter poker machine! Every Sunday Mom and Margi would head to one of the malls (Scottsdale Fashion Square, Chandler Mall were favorites) and would enjoy brunch, a Manhattan cocktail, and graduate-level shopping! Mom was an incredibly strong, funny, sarcastic (loved that!) woman and had many friends at the Legacy Retirement Residence, her home since 2012.

In the last few years mom survived throat cancer and other ailments. A thank you for the last three great years must be extended to Dr. Robert Laufer, Dr. Andy Collins, Dr. Loreto Sulit, and Dr. Mark Ono. They treated Mom with kindness, respect, and truly gave us the greatest gift of all – quality time together. Thanks also to the nurses and staff at Banner Baywood who gave Mom gentle care and supported us through those final hours. No services are planned per Mom’s wishes. As Mom often said, “we will all be together again or it wouldn’t be heaven. It’s not good-bye, just see ya’ later alligator.” Mama, love you to the moon and back; wait for us in the lobby of heaven.
